Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XG-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull the chain up to the center of the tire and secure it to the red hook that is attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Drive forward so that the chain can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Easy to put on and take off. Love the hard plastic container with velcro on one side- makes storing convenient. A bit pricey but these are high quality chains so worth the $.

I’ve had to use my chains 3 times in the past year. Each time was under varying conditions of ice and snow and cold but I was gratified each time how easily I placed them. The self tension feature really worked well. Glad I bought them!

by:

Never used chains before. Bought these for my 2021 Jeep grand Cherokee. They works perfect! Tried them out in a trip to mammoth. Very rough conditions but they got the job die and got us through rough snow and ice. Best part they were easy to install. When chains required, took me less than 15 min to then in vs other struggling with conventional chains. Getting ready again for this upcoming winter. Thank you for the great videos and features allowing me to buy with confidence.

by:

Very hefty set of chains with a good carrying case. Once I finally figured out the installation it turns out to be very easy - you don't have to move the vehicle at all to get them fully installed. But they were so tangled up on arrival it took me 5-10 minutes just to figure out how to untangle them. Installation was very non-intuitive (having never used chains before - just auto-socks). The instructions provided were pretty much worthless but some online videos made it clear. Now that I've figured it out I can install them pretty quick and easy. With adequate care in storing, the tangling can be minimized. Will likely soon put them to use in the mountains now that there's snow on the ground but as beefy as these are I feel confident they'll perform just fine.

by:

I have not had to use these in snow/ice yet but I have put them on twice to test them. They are easy to install and the self adjusting function seems to work. The cord on the self adjuster is like a heavy elastic bungee and might wear out with frequent use but for in frequent use or for emergency situations which is why I bought them, they are more than adequate.

2019 Jeep Wrangler

Purchased for use of a 2019 JL Wrangler. Seem very high quality, will be trying them out in Montana January 2020. Definitely easy on, easy off install. I would suggest trying them on the vehicle prior to initial use in the intended climate. Right out of the box they were stored appropriately and not tangled. Easy to place back in storage container. Will be purchasing a set for the wife's and in-law's vehicles providing they excel in winter climate, but have no doubts they will.

by:

I need to look at the pic of how to install every season but they work great once installed!

by:

They’re great and easy to put on (the second time).

2002 Ford F-150

I purchased the XG-12 Pro chains for my truck, although I have a 4X4 I live in Alaska, we get frequent ice storms. Rather then beating my truck up I’m using these chains on the back wheels for better traction. Easy to install and adjust in a few minutes I can climb out of my valley with confidence, no more slipping or sliding. I can control my vehicle completely and stay on my side of the road even when being stopped on a slope I can start forward progress without slippage. Once on main roads, only minutes to remove. I’d recommend this product to anyone, was the answer for the issues I encounter in Alaska. Firm traction when I absolutely need it when my all season radials just don’t quite handle the situation. Awesome, easy to handle and reliable chains!

by:

Expensive but seem worth the cost. I'm a big believer in the "buy once, cry once" philosophy, and don't mind paying a premium for quality that will last. Time will tell on the long-term durability of these chains (the retractable bungee and its plastic connectors give me pause, but we'll see), but my initial assessment is that they're well designed and well built, and are by far the easiest to put on chains I've used. I'll update this review after the snowy season with my thoughts on performance relative to traditional chains I've used in the past, as well as their durability.

P.S. watch the installation videos. They're much more informative than the manual that comes with the chains

by:
2004 Chevrolet Suburban

These chains are absolutely excellent. There are good visual instructions within the kit, and there is also an excellent video demonstrating installation. I was able to install them within 5 minutes.

Another great feature is the ease of laying out the chains prior to installation as well as adequate room and ease of placement back into the kit when the chains are removed.

Would be reasonable to obtain a gardening pad and light gloves to place within the kit.

Though thee chains do cost more than cables, in this case, " You get what you pay for", and the cost is commensurate with the quality of construction and ease of use.

by:

Just as advertised.

by:

I put the chains on in good weather to make sure I knew how. It took a little longer the first time, learning that you must orient the chains just as shown in the videos. After doing it once, it was easy to repeat the process. They fit perfectly and worked perfectly last winter. Lightweight, easy on and off, I'm very happy with them. They are a bit expensive, but the convenience has been worth it to me.

by:

The directions were confusing at first, but by combining the directions on the case with the ones in the manual it finally made sense. Make sure to wrap the colored end *under* the axle and not over as it appears to be in the directions. Once you figure it out you can have it mounted in a minute or two. Much easier than chains that must be levered closed with air pressure reduced (then re-inflated) for a tight fit. I haven't had the chance to drive with them yet.

2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Just received the chains a couple of days ago. Practiced on one tire-very easy to install, or so it seems. Can't say anything yet about how they hold up, or performance. Seem to be well made. This 5 star rating is mostly for the customer service I received from etrailer. It was fantastic. Would highly recommend them.

No change since last review. Actually have not needed to use them yet. Practiced again, seems simple to install.

by:

I’ve used these a few times on my TRD Pro 4Runner’s Nitto Terra Grappler tires to comply with Yosemite NP’s chain controls. Even in my first practice runs (ALWAYS practice in the warm) they were a straightforward exercise to mount. I’d definitely recommend a gardener’s knee pad for comfort. Keeps me comfortable to take the time for a good mount, a definite plus along with dry knees.

They stayed tight with no signs of wear even with some limited bare asphalt miles. The hard carry case makes always having them in the truck a no brainer: and the best chains are the ones in your truck, not on your garage shelf.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500

This product worked as advertised with the self-tensioning system - don't worry if its not perfectly aligned when you first put them on, but driving a little ways (~25 yards) and it centered on the tires by themselves! I put them on before heading out on the lake for ice fishing and the chains worked great on the ice and snow when pulling the fish house. I'd recommend practicing in the garage at home so you know what you are doing beforehand, especially if gets near zero where you live - but they are easy to put on/off once you've done it.

Our first order was lost in transit but the etrailer folks were on it!! They called me, explained what the shipper told them and reshipped immediately! Excellent service and I love the product. We live in N.NV and chains are essential in the winter…these are easy on and off and do the job well.

by:

These chains are quick and easy to install with a little practice. They grip in snow and ice incredibly. We had 10” of snow last winter that froze to ice and the chains pulled through and gripped well.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado

Just finished dry fitting these chains on rear of my Chevy Silverado 1500 LT 4 x 4. Before doing so I watched a couple of available videos on etrailer.com. Installation went very well; chains fit tight and secure without difficulty. Quality of product appears to be in line with pricing. Chains shipped from Missouri on time and without delays.

Paul B. and the Team at etrailer provided exceptional service with great communication and follow thru.

The best snow chain that fits the tire size of 265/65R18 that you have on your 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 is the Konig set part # TH01594267. Overall these are the easiest to install, will last the longest, and provide the best traction as well. I attached an install video that shows how easy they are to install on a similar GM SUV. Having an easier install is really nice when you are in the conditions that call for snow chains. These chains are made from a high quality manganese nickel...

  • Snow Chains or Snow Tires on 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500
A good set of tire chains will provide better traction than snow tires in deep snow and ice and also help a ton with your steep driveway when it's slick. The advantage of snow tires is there isn't a low speed limit like with chains and you don't have the setup process. The issue is that snow tires can handle really stange on dry pavement since the treads are soft and the tires themselves are skinner. This means if you don't plan on constantly being in the snow and think you'll be dealing...

One of my bosses had a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee but it was an all-wheel drive version, not a true 4-wheel drive version, and could have used some more stout tire chains when he got stuck once upon a time.
