Tamarack Radials

Unlike standard trailer tire tread, which has solid, continuous ribs, the tread on these Tamarack radials has ribs with breaks. These breaks allow water to run off to the sides. The Tamarack tread also has sipes. Siping is a process in which thin grooves (or sipes) are cut into the rubber of the tire. The grooves channel water away from the tread so that the tire makes better contact with the road. Both of these features greatly improve traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions.

Tamarack radials are constructed with double steel belts and double nylon cords. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Review of Castle Rock Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - LHCK301

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Castle Rock ST205/75R15 radial trailer tire in a load range C. Now this is a radial tire, so it is great for highway use and it's constructed with double steel belts, double nylon plies, and they do use a nylon tread firming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation. Now if you notice on the tread design, if you look on the tread on these blocks, you'll notice they have cuts in them. Those are called sipes. Basically, the siping that's on these tires treads right here.

This will help channel water away from underneath the tire to improve traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions. And this tire is an ST tire, which stands for a special trailer tire. It has this sturdy sidewall so they can handle heavy loads. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles.

Now, they do offer a complimentary roadside assistance for two years. They give you flat tire service available 24/7 anywhere in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico. And this tire will meet the DOT, Department of Transportation, and the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard specifications. Now this tire will mount onto a 15-inch by 5-inch wide, 15 by 5-1/2-inch, 15 by 6-inch, and a 15 by 6-1/2-inch size wheel. The tire size, which is stamped on the sidewall, you can see right here ST for special trailer 205/75R15.

R means that it is a radial tire. Now the section width on it is 8-inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top. When it's inflated, it's 27.1. And we mentioned this is a load range C tire, which means it's a six-ply rated tire.

So it does have a maximum load capacity of 1,820 pounds at 50 PSI. And one last thing is all the trailer tires now do come with a speed rating stamped on them, and it's usually stamped by a letter designation. And where you'll find that is usually right after the size. If you go around the tire, you'll see it says speed rating, and it shows a letter L, and then in brackets it'll tell you it's 75 mile per hour speed rating. But that should do it for a look at this Castle Rock ST205/75R15 radial trailer tire in a load range C.

  • Are Castle Rock Tires Bad Tires As Indicated By Outside Reviews
Castle Rock Tires like the # LHCK301 are perfectly fine trailer tires. I am aware of the stories people have, primarily with blowouts. However, in many cases tire failure was likely due to poor maintenance. Could it have been the Castle Rock tire? Sure, any tire out there is subject to problems and nothing is perfect. More than likely the problems you have read about are due to poor inflation, exceeding the speed rating of the tire, or overloading the trailer. This is also why many of...

The reason the height on a ST205/75R15 tire like the Castle Rock Trailer Tire # LHCK301 and a ST225/75D15 tire like the Taskmaster Trailer Tire # TTWSF22515D look about the same is because they are about the same, particularly to the naked eye.
