Video Transcript for An In-Depth Look at the Shackle Strap

Hi everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a brief look at this shackle strap. Now, this three and a half inch long shackle strap is going to connect your double eye spring to your rear hangar of your single axle trailer or your equalizer on your multiaxial trailer. This connection, as you no doubt know, is going to allow movement to take place, ensuring an evenly distributed load between the axles. This is made of durable steel and shackle.

strap lengths are measured from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the other. So lining up my ruler here, as you can see on center, we're sitting right at three and a half inches, center to center, and that bolt hole diameter is 9 16ths of an inch. And if you're interested, the overall length of our strap is right at four and three quarters inches long, edge to edge, and then the overall width, we're sitting at one and a quarter inches. Well, that's gonna wrap up our real quick look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you.

Again, my name is Andy, thank you for joining me.

  • How to Gain Ground Clearance for a Travel Trailer that Hits the Driveway When Entering or Leaving
There are a couple different ways to raise the ride height of your trailer, but before we choose the best option for you, we will want to take a look at a few things. First, it sounds like you are not towing with your trailer level so you do not hit your ball mount on the driveway. A trailer that is not level can create many problems such as ground clearance and trailer sway. If you have any sway control issues with your trailer, then I would recommend moving your leaf springs above your...

  • Is 1/4 Inch Height Difference Okay For Use With E-Z Flex Equalizers
Hi Sam, Good question, and the mere 1/4 inch difference in the height is not going to have any type of negative effect on your trailer so you can 100 percent use the E-Z Flex Equalizers # K71-655-00. These are a smart choice as they'll make a nice difference in how your trailer rides due to its rubber cores absorbing bounce and shock.

  • Switching from Standard Equalizers to Road Armor Kit and Recommended Shackles + Bushings
You will be able to use the Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizers since they're fairly close in dimensions (6" wide x 3-1/4"). I recommend pairing these equalizers with the Never Fail Tandem Axle Suspension Kit # LC281285 which comes with 2 different lengths of shackle straps (3-1/2" and 4-3/8" bolt hole to bolt hole) to accommodate for the change in height, new bolts and bushings for your springs. One of the great things about this kit, aside from it being high quality and durable, is...

  • Can Trailer With Existing 3-1/2" Shackle Straps Use 2-5/16" Shackle Straps From Equalizer Kit
Switching the shackle straps on your 2015 Big Tex 60CH would not be a good idea, especially since you would be using a significantly shorter size. In general, you want to keep the same length since swapping them out will change the suspension geometry and cause problems. Sometimes you need to use a longer shackle if you get a tall equalizer but I'm sure that doesn't apply here. Assuming you truly have 3-1/2" shackle straps you aren't going to find a kit with those since they aren't a...

  • What to do if Trailer Shackles are Flipping
Generally the issue when shackles flip when hauling empty is that they are too short. So I recommend measuring them from center hole to center hole and assuming they are less than 3 inches, replacing them with longer ones, the 3-1/8" Shackle Strap # TRSL313 or 3-1/2" Shackle Strap # TRSL350.

  • Availability Of Suspension Kit With 3-1/2" Long Shackle Links
Hello Lance, thanks for reaching out. When replacing shackle straps and equalizers, the replacement parts must be identical in size to the original. Since your current shackles are 3.5" long, you will NOT be able to use the 2-1/4" shackles that come with the # K71-449-00 kit. There is a small amount of tolerance, like 1/2" or less, but a 1-1/4" difference is way too much and this would throw your suspension out of alignment. We do have parts that will still work for you. We have a 3.5"...

  • Raising Trailer Suspension To Clear Rear Leaf Spring From Hitting The Crossmember
It appears you may have installed shackle straps which are longer than what you may have had. It appears your straps are either 3-1/8" # TRSL313 or 3-1/2" # TRSL350 and you likely only need a 2-1/4" # TRSL225. This would move the mounting point closer to the axle and raise the trailer approximately 1/2". To get enough height to clear your crossmember you will likely need the Lift Kit # RR23QX. This will allow you to raise the suspension either 1-1/4" or 2-1/4" to clear your rear crossmember. On...

  • Can 3-1/2" Shackles Replace 3-1/4" Shackles On Boat Trailer?
Since your hangers are the same size you will just want to match the new shackles to your original shackles as that is how the suspension was setup from the manufacturer. With that said since there is only a 1/4" difference between the original3-1/4" shackles and the new 3-1/2" shackles like the # TRSL350 you purchased you won't have any issues. I included a video of the # TRSL350 for you to take a look at.

  • Correct Positioning of Shackle Strap
There is no set angle, but you want to leave enough room for the suspension to articulate. By looking at the photo, you will indeed need to move the rear hanger back a bit. The shackle strap be much closer to vertical, as shown in the diagram provided.

  • Replacement Equalizer, Shackles and Wet Bolts for 20 Foot Trailer with 7-3/4 Inch Wide Equalizer
I have a solution for you, but the Dexter # K71-359-00 is not going to be a fit since the equalizer is only 5-3/4" wide. You could use the Suspension Kit for Tandem-Axle Trailers - 1-3/4" Wide Double Eye Springs - 3-1/8" Links # e99ZR, which has the correct size equalizer but does not come with wet bolts and the shackle are also slightly shorter than your 3-1/2" shackles; the shackle length won't be an issue since shackles can stretch over time but if you wanted a wet bolt kit it would...

  • Shackle Straps Are Flipping on Tandem Axle Trailer
Shackle links can flip when the trailer is unloaded since there isn't enough weight to keep them in proper position, and while a new, shorter equalizer may help, the easiest thing to check is the shackle links. Shackles that are too short can cause them to flip, so the best thing to check first is the length of your shackles, and replace them with longer ones if possible. You'll want to measure from center to center of the bolt holes to check their length, and replace them with one of...

  • Will Adding the Lippert Road Armor Raise My Trailer to an Unsafe Height
We've seen a lot of our neighbors raise their trailer considerably more than 1/2" without adversely affecting handling on their trailers; many of them use spacer blocks or axle flip kits to gain as much as 4 to 4-1/2" of additional clearance. As long as your trailer tows level with your truck, I don't believe that extra 1/2" of height will have the negative effects you might expect. When it comes to adding the Lippert Road Armor # LC696740 to your 2021 Venture Sporttrek 327VIK, these are...

  • Should 2-1/4 Shackle Straps with New Suspension Kit be Used Instead of 3-1/2 Current Straps
The 1/4" shorter equalizer in the Dexter Heavy-Duty Suspension Kit # K71-359-00 will be just fine but you are correct that you don't want to use shorter shackle straps as well. You can either reuse your old ones if they are in good shape or use the 3-1/2" Shackle Strap # TRSL350 instead. It would be a good idea to just use new straps since you are changing out suspension parts anyways.

  • How Many Shackle Straps For Single Axle Trailer
The Shackle Strap part # TRSL350 comes as a single strap. There should be 2 shackle straps per spring on a single axle trailer. You would need to order 4 of the part # TRSL350 for a single axle.

I went out to the warehouse and pulled u-bolt # CE15260A to measure it. The inside width is 3-1/2 inches. The center to center width is 3-7/8 inches. And the outer width is 4-1/4 inches. The inside height is 6 inches. The overall height is 6-3/8 inches. The shackle link # TRSL350 would not work because the hole spacing is too short at 3-1/2 inches. You would have to either bore out the holes some or bend the u-bolt to fit. We do not have a specific plate that would work or that has the...

  • Recommended Ways To Raise Height Of Small 4 X 8 utility Trailer
Since you do not want to use an over/under kit on your axle, the best way to raise the trailer would be to use longer hangers for the leaf springs. You may be able to use a hanger like part # E4139. This hanger is designed for double-eye springs and is 4-1/4 inches tall. The old hangers will need to be cut off and the replacement hangers welded on by a professional. I have attached a link to our product page for the trailer hangers we offer you can check out. • Dexter Axle Easy Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension Equalizers With Longer Shackle Straps
The E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System by Dexter Axle part # K71-652-00 does have 2-1/4" shackles so it would raise your suspension system up a bit if you use the shorter shackles. However, you can use the Dexter Axle Equalizers part # K71-654-00 and 3-1/2" Long shackle straps part # TRSL350 to make sure you are not raising your suspension.

  • How to Gain Trailer Ground Clearance
There are ways to increase ground clearance on a trailer, but you can't flip the shackles to do that. You can do this by moving the axles from being above the leaf springs to below the leaf springs. The diameter of your trailer axle will determine the size of the parts that you will need to order. If your axle is 3 inches diameter, the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit, # K71-385-00, would be a great choice and if your axle is 2-3/8 inch diameter you could use the Over-Under...

  • Selecting Replacement Shackle Straps for 30-Foot Toy Hauler Trailer
Shackle straps are the most wear-prone part of a trailer suspension since they both carry weight and receive constant friction from the motion of the suspension. Shackle straps do not carry specific weight capacities, unlike the leaf springs they suspend. To select replacements all you need to do is match their length. Shackle straps are available in three lengths, 3-1/8-inch (single axle systems), 2-5/8-inch (tandem and triple axle trailers) and 2-1/4-inch, the most common length for...

  • Are Shackles Supposed To Move Freely and Can They Flip The Wrong Way
The shackles on suspension systems like part # TRSL350 are designed to be fairly loose because the equalizer on your trailer suspension needs to be able to move without binding. The best thing to do when tightening down shackle bolts is to use lock nuts, tighten them until they are snug, then back them off 1/4 turn. It is possible that the shackle can flip into the wrong direction however most of the time putting weight on the trailer is enough to correct it or you can jack up the trailer...

  • Recommendation For Keeping Shackles From Flipping Up On Uneven Terrain
Longer hangers will not prevent the shackles from flipping. If this has always happened or if the springs are new then they are too short. If it happens only when your trailer is empty then not enough weight/tension to keep shackles in place so they flip. This happens normally when the trailer is unloaded. If this is a new/recent occurrence then something-shackle straps, equalizer holes, etc- has worn out and needs to replaced. If it's a shackle issue, you will need to measure from...

Since your tandem axle trailer has an axle spacing of 35 inches the correct equalizer upgrade kit you'd want is the part # K71-449-00.
