Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Parts to Convert 5-Spoke Utility Hub to Modern Style Hub on 10K Trailer
Thank you for reaching out! It looks like your Dexter Axle uses the 5 Spoke Utility Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-174-5UC3 so to replace that and your brakes you need the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K as well as the 12" Self-Adjusting Electric Brakes # TRU96FR. These will be exact fits for your system but the hub and drum kit comes with a slightly larger grease seal so you need the Replacement Grease Seal Set # RG06-090 for each axle on your trailer. Your older...

  • Will Switching From a Drop Axle to a Straight Axle Increase Tire Clearance
The 175/80-13 tire that you have now is 24" diameter x 6.9" wide and the new 225/75-15 tire is 28.3" diameter x 8.9" wide. Therefore, the new tire size will be 4.3" larger in overall diameter and 2" larger in overall width. However, you will only need to account for half of each measurement so 2.15" for diameter and 1" for width. The conversion from the 4" drop axle you have now to a straight axle is actually going to bring the spindle down in line with the axle which means you are actually...

  • Is There a Better Tire/Wheel Kit Than the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel
Hey Mark, thanks for reaching out! The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM32680 you've picked out is a really solid choice - the only way I would recommend something else is if you're wanting a different style like the kit # AM32684 or kit # KE56JR which is the same tire just on different aluminum wheels instead. If you aren't concerned with a specific style then I say to stick with the white wheel as it's an industry standard.

  • Do You Have A White Rim And Tire For My Existing 225/75/15?
Hey Ed, We do have a white rim option with a tire for your trailer. I recommend the Kenda # AM32680, a white rim with tire that is load range E like your original tires giving it a 2,830lb capacity at 80psi. It does have a 6 x 5-1/2 bolt pattern. I recommend double checking your bolt pattern, what you mentioned is not a standard or common lug pattern on trailers. I would bet you have a 6 x 5-1/2 since that is by far the most common for that tire size. I attached an article about measuring...

  • Choosing Bigger Tires to Increase Trailer Ground Clearance
It depends on how much clearance you currently have around your wheels. Ideally, you should have 3 inches minimum clearance between your fender and your wheels and an inch minimum between your sidewall and trailer frame/wall. As your wheel size increases, your clearance decreases so please measure with that in mind. You current tires are 225/75/R15 similar to # AM32680. As you can see, this tire has an outside diameter of 28.4". Going up two inches would bring you to a wheel and tire like...

Hello Glenn! There are a couple options depending on the style you want: - Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM32680 - Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Silver Mod Wheel # LHAW124 - Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Tire w/ 15" Eagle Aluminum Wheel # WST36FR
