Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • What Tire Size Should I Go Up to on My 2010 R-Pod 177 with Current Tire Size 205/75R14?
Hello Will, Looking to upsize your wheels and tires on your R-Pod? Always a great idea! Your current 205/75R14 tires are about 26.1" in diameter and 8.1" wide. We don’t carry the 205/85R15 size, which suggests it's not very common. A more typical upgrade is to 205/75R15, like the Kenda Karrier KR53 ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # KE94WV. This setup will give you roughly an extra inch in diameter. We've also had customers successfully run 225/75R15...

  • Upgrading Tires and Wheels on Single Axle Travel Trailer
Your existing tires are about 8 inches wide by about 26 to 26-1/2 inches in diameter. The larger 225/75-15 would be about 1/2 inch wider and around 28 inches in diameter, which would only use 3/4 to 1 inch of the available 3-1/2 inches of clearance you mentioned.. From the clearances you mentioned, it sounds like the # AM3S862 would work well for you. This being said, I would recommend you go with a wheel/tire combo that uses a radial tire, like part # AM32459. The combo has a C load rating,...

  • What Does ST in Trailer Tire Size ST225/75D15 Mean
ST on a tire size like the Loadstar ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST96 you referenced indicates "special trailer" which means it was designed specifically for use in a trailer application. This type of tire can only be used on a trailer. For more info on trailer tires check out the help article I attached. There's more info on the different trailer tire constructions as well.

  • Spare Wheel and Tire for Venture Boat Trailer with Tire Size ST225/75R15 and 5 Lug Bolt Pattern

  • Wider Tires for Use on Sand for a JetSki Trailer
You are in luck because all 12 inch trailer tires fit the same size wheels. I recommend going with a 145-12, # AM10130. It will have a section width of 5.7 inches, nearly a full inch wider than your existing tires. You will need to make sure that you have enough space all around the existing tires for the larger size. The new tires will be 0.8 inches taller and 0.8 inches wider. To go wider than that you would have to step up to a 13 inch and you would have to change wheels as well. We...

  • Spare Wheel and Tire For a Stock Trailer With 225/75R15 Tires and a 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern
If you have a 225/75R15 tire mounted on your trailer wheels and they hold air the wheel is going to be a 15" wheel. It is very difficult to measure the wheel diameter accurately as the measurement is take for the bead seat area where the tire mounts. The best way to verify your wheel size is by checking for the stamped size inside the wheel itself. The width is also measured to the bead seat width. As you are looking for a spare wheel and tire I recommend choosing either the Karrier ST225/75R15...

  • Wheel and Tire Recommendations for a Livestock Trailer with 5 Lug Wheels and 7.00x15LT Tires
I have a solution for you, but the 7.00x 15 LT tire size you have is a light truck tire size. LT tires should not be used on trailers although some do without issue. Trailer tires are designed with a thicker sidewall that can accommodate higher air pressures and the weight of the trailer load. Trailer tires should also be inflated to their maximum pressure that is stamped on the sidewall. The trailer tires that we carry are not intended to be used at speeds over 65 miles per hour, unless...

  • Increasing Trailer Wheel and Tire Size on a 2003 Pace 6 X 12 Foot Trailer
Your ST205/75d14 Trailer tire is approximately 26.3 inches tall and 7.8 inches wide overall by my calculations (see Measuring a trailer tire link). The Karrier ST225/75R15, item # AM32459, is 28.4 inches tall and 8.9 inches wide overall. If you decide to change to the larger wheel and tire you will need to be sure you get the proper lug pattern (see link for determining wheel bolt pattern) and that the larger size of the tire will not rub the fender on the inside, outside or the top of...

  • Can ST205/75R15 Trailer Tires be Replaced With ST225/75R15 Trailer Tires on Grey Wolf 29TE
You can, assuming you have the proper clearance; with trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. ST205/75R15 measure 27.1" in diameter and 8.1" wide, while ST225/75R15 tires measure 28.3" in diameter and 8.9" wide, so you'll only be adding about 5/8" of height and 3/8" of width near the frame rail. A quality tire with the...

  • Spare Tire Recommendation for a 225/75R15 on a Trailer
The Kenda Karrier ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM32545 that you referenced would be the same size and would technically work, but since your trailer currently has radials on it I would recommend you go with a radial instead of a bias ply tire like what this one has. For that you would want the part # AM32459. This tire is a bit more expensive but it would be your best option. It is highly recommended you use the same tire construction for all trailer tires. The...

  • Radial vs Bias Tire for a Boat Trailer
The difference between Radial and Bias tires is that Radials will run cooler than Bias (making them last longer for highway applications) and they have more flexibility for better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. Bias tires have a stiffer sidewall which makes them ideal for off-road use like on a farm. Since most people transport their boats on the highway I recommend going with a Radial tire. The other thing you will want to pay attention to is the type of wheel that...

  • Should Larger Tires and Wheels be Used to Go Camping on the Beach with a Trailer
Ultimately you want the most surface area on sand so if you have the means to upgrade your tire/wheel size then go for it! What you need to do prior to purchasing new tires/wheels is to go out and check on your current set to see what kind of clearances you have. You want to have at least 4" of clearance above your tires (for suspension travel) and then at least 2" of clearance between the sidewall of your tires and your trailer frame. With all of that being said, the largest tire you'd...

  • Can 205/75-14 be Used in Place of 205/75-14
You would easily be able to fit a 225/75-15 in place of your 205/75-14 that you have now. The 235 size is an off road size though so I wouldn't recommend going that route. So for a 225 the Karrier part # AM32459 ST225/75R15 would work really well. It has same bolt pattern as what you have now, an 81 mph speed rating and a capacity of 2,150 lb.

  • Will 225/75-15 Trailer Tires Work To Replace 155/80-13 Trailer Tires
The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Wheel part # AM32459 is what I recommend you use to upgrade the wheels/tires on the trailer. This combo measures 28.4 Diameter x 8.9" Wide. If you have room for this larger size there would be no downside of this and more upsides than just added height such as a higher speed rating, greater weight capacity, and better tire selection. Please note, we recommend about 3-4" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender and...

For a spare that matches your tire size and wheel bolt pattern the Karrier # AM32459 would be a really great option. It's a great value wheel and tire would work great in event you needed it. Now the other issue I see that you are using a passenger vehicle tire on your trailer which isn't the safest option. You really should go with a tire that is rated for use on a trailer so that you prevent premature failure and possibly cause other issues. The Westlake tire part # LHWL304 would be...
