When a trailer or heavy gear pushes down on the rear suspension, the Hellwig EZ-550 Helper Springs add up to 500 lbs of load-leveling capacity to keep your truck sitting level. Mounted above the factory leaf springs, they prevent sagging and help maintain proper braking and steering response under light towing or hauling. The extra support also helps extend the life of your original suspension, tires, and brakes.
Rough roads and uneven loads can make the ride unstable. These helper springs flex with your existing leaf pack to minimize bounce and reduce body roll so the truck stays steady through turns and over bumps. You’ll notice less sway when hauling gear or pulling a small trailer, which makes every mile feel more controlled.
Every haul is different, and these springs let you fine-tune for each one. The included U-bolts can be adjusted to match varying weight or uneven cargo from side to side. You can set each spring independently so both sides of the truck carry their share, keeping the bed level whether you’re loaded evenly or not.
There’s no need for complicated fabrication or shop time. The EZ-550 bolts above your factory leaf springs using zinc-plated hardware that resists corrosion. With its simple bolt-on design, you can install it in your own driveway using basic hand tools and be ready to tow or haul with better stability in short order.
Work trucks take a beating, so construction matters. These helper springs are made from strong steel with a silver vein hammer tone powder coat finish that stands up to rust and wear. They’re built for long-term performance so you can count on consistent support season after season.

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Hellwig EZ-550 Above Axle Helper Springs for the small GM trucks. Now, this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2015 and newer Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks. And on a custom fit part like this, I do like to recommend for you go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model of vehicle, and it'll show if this a work for your application.
Now, these are light duty custom helper springs that upgrade your factory leaf springs to reduce any sway and body roll. These will prevent sagging when you're towing or hauling light loads, and it helps extend the life of your factory suspension, tires and brakes. Now, these will flex with your leaf springs to limit bouncing, while providing optimal stability. And the U-bolts, if we zoom in on those. You can see these U-bolts here, they can be adjusted to suit different loads.
And also, the drivers and passenger sides can be adjusted independently for uneven loads. Now, this is a very easy install. It'll bolt above your factory leaf springs. All the mounting hardware, as you can see, is included. Comes with a nice set of instructions.
It is a durable steel construction, ensures long-lasting performance. And I just also wanna zoom in on the finish on these. If you look real close, it uses a silver vein hammer toned powder coat finish to resist rust and corrosion, plus give it a good look. Now, these parts are made in the USA. Weight capacity on this is 500 pounds.
One thing I do wanna mention is Hellwig Helper Springs will not increase your vehicle's weight carrying capacity. But that should do it for the review on the Hellwig EZ-550 Above Axle Helper Springs for the small GM trucks.
Ratings & Reviews
I have had three straight weeks of hauling sizable loads in my truck and install these right before the most recent load. Truck sits more level with the same load in it and the handling around corners and tight spots and the way that it handles the bumps has improved dramatically.
Came quickly, well packed and complete. I've seen complaints about the hardware, but it seemed fine. The bracket bolts are oddly sized at 13/16.
One concern on my 97 F-150 is that theHellwig brackets seem too long to tighten up sufficiently. I have run out of thread with the spring gap at about one inch.
Had I realized that I'd have to remove the leaf spring brackets to install this I probably would have paid to get the ones that mount over the spring bracket. Getting 28 year old bolt loose is a bear.
Easy to install and works great so far.
The Hellwig helper springs did exactly what I needed them to do! Pulled a 10000#
34' 5th wheel on our 16 F150 with 5 people
onboard. A lot more economical than air bags, which wouldn't work with 5th wheel frame mounts.
Absolutely! For some reason the truck was sagging on the passenger side. I put the hewing helpers on both sides but snugged the passenger side down a bit and leveled the truck.
Made of good material. Would try on different trucks I have
They were very easy to install and I like the added stiffness it gave to my suspension. I have yet to hook up to my camper but I am looking forward to it.
Completely helped the squating rear on 350xl transit box truck with dual rear wheels. Improved ride and handling when loaded. Rides smooth and looks like it is supposed to.
This is exactly what we needed to finish our customer's job. This shipping was so quick. Thank you all so much!!
Parts ordered, shipping box was compromised, missing parts to do the install.
Now i need to fab a square u-bolt to use the product like i planed this weekend.
Ez-990 helper springs sagged with 800lb camper and bottomed while driving over speed bumps unless creeping. Unloaded there was noticeable tightness, almost binding feeling on bumps. I removed and checking options like airbags or Sumo.
These work great. Very easy install. I have a bed slide and a camper top, and these brought the rear back up to the proper height.
Great product. Quick shipping. Would buy here again.
Product seems good, instructions are terrible . Can't find a video with my product for install anywhere .
Easy to install, very effective and didn’t have much effect on ride quality. Mine worked on the lowest setting with a 16’ camper.
These springs eliminated the rear sag from adding a shell, rubber bed mat, and a little gear.
Easy to install as well, but recomend having a 7/16X20 tap/die to clean threads on supplied u-bolts.
Easy to install. It should help stabilize the rear springs when I tow our boat.
The product fit well and installed would have been a breeze if it wasn’t for the hardware. The u bolts are very poor quality with burrs and poorly tolerances threads. In addition only half the hardware was the correct size. One set of nuts was too big for the u bolts. The hardware was also low quality. In my opinion it should have all been grade 8 corrosion resistant hardware and it is much lower grade. I ended up having to buy all new hardware to be able to install at an additional cost. Now that it is installed the product works fantastic. Just be aware you may need to purchase extra hardware to get it installed.
Helper springs made my Ram 1500 Conversion Van have a more comfortable ride. The springs raised the profile of the back of the van by about 1-1/2", which is not noticeable and the van still looks good. My RV Travel trailer lowered the back half of the van by about 1", before I installed the helper springs. The helper springs should enhance the ride of the van.
The springs lifted my Tacoma with a cap about an inch higher. It would have been more helpful if the directions indicated that a C-Clamp would be useful to compress the spring ends to allow the u-bolts to be installed. The directions also indicated the long end of the spring should face forward. I measured the spring from the end to the hole and this was the same either way, so was confusing. I purchased longer axle u-bolts since the added thickness of this extra spring made the factory u-bolts too short IMO. I feel that should have been part of this kit. Lastly, the u-bolt on the driver's side did not need to be installed sideways per the instruction. It fit fine just as the other u-boults were installed. Maybe the instructions could be updated to be more accurate.
I was a great addition to my RST 1500 Chevy and I transferred to my High Country 1500 Chevy and never missed a beat towing the travel trailer.
Easy install great fit. Readjusted for our new trailer in 10 minutes and working wonderfully.Leveled the truck and rides smooth..
Easy to install, does not affect the ride much , worked great pulling my fish house to the lake. I showed my helper springs to one of my customers, gave him the part number for his truck and he ordered them from e-trailer today. Great product.
Loaded my tacoma with a portaboat on the ladder rack and a few hundred pounds of camping gear. The sag was gone after installing these. The ride is a little bit stiffer when empty as to be expected but not bad even on washboard dirt roads. These can be fairly easily installed and removed if desired. Hardest part is jacking up the truck to sit on the frame
Way better than expected. Huge difference in the rear suspension. It’s almost like having a sway bar.
