The top channels have split rubber strips that fill the gaps to reduce wind noise and vibration as you drive. It’s a smoother ride without the whistling overhead.
This rack is built for all kinds of trips. You can mount channel-style accessories right into the top tracks or clamp gear directly around the bars. That means one setup works for cargo boxes, kayak carriers, or ski holders—whatever fits your next adventure. A 165 lb weight capacity gives plenty of support for typical outdoor gear.
Some racks make you cut rubber strips to fit your accessories. These don’t. The split design lets you slide attachments straight into the top channel with no trimming required. The strips close back around the mounts to keep things sealed against wind and weather while keeping installation simple.

I agree with you that the rack should include the keys however Thule only offers the one lock system separately as part # TH450400 for a 4 pack. They do it this way so that if you have other Thule accessories like a Thule kayak or bike carrier then you can have the option of ordering enough keys to swap them all out to key them the same. For example you can also buy a six part part # TH450600 or an eight pack like part # TH450800.
