Optronics MCL57 Series 2.5 In Round Sumbersible LED Clearance or Side Marker Light - Clear Lens - Red LEDs Diagram

Sonically Sealed, Waterproof Trailer Light

The waterproof construction of this light makes it ideal for use on trailers that may be submerged, like a boat trailer. The housing and lens are sonically sealed together to create a single unit, which means that water will not get into the light and damage the diodes or circuit board.

PL-2 Wiring Connection

Optronics PL-2 Connection

This light has an industry-standard PL-2 connection as pictured above. The light accepts a 2-prong plug (sold separately). The plug connects to 2 of the points on the PL-2 connection for power and ground. And the plug covers the unused third point on the connection to seal it against dirt and moisture.

Recessed-Mount Light

Recessed mount light

Recessed-mount trailer lights install underneath a housing or a grommet (A55GB, A56GB, or A57GB - all sold separately). These lights will extend into the mounting surface and require that a hole be cut into your trailer.

P2-Rated Lights

Diagram of light spread for P2 rated light

A P2-rated light produces a 45-degree angle of light to either side of its centerline for a total of 90 degrees of coverage. This beam pattern can be seen straight on, but it cannot be seen clearly from the side. So this type of light can be used as either a side marker light or a clearance light, but it cannot function as both. If you need both functions, then you must install 2 separate lights on your trailer - one as a front or rear clearance light and one as a side marker light.

Video Transcript for Optronics LED Clearance or Side Marker Light Review and Installation

Hi there, safety conscious haulers. Today we're going to be taking a look at Optronics 2.5 inch round clear lens side-marker lights. These LED lights are available in either amber for the front of your trailer or in red for the rear of your trailer. And this is what our light looks like when it's installed. The clear lens is going to give it a more modern look, especially when the lights are turned off. When the lights are turned on, it's going to look like an amber reflector lens just like most of the others out there. One of the things that does stand out with this versus your typical incandescent though, is that we've got three lights here because there are three diodes inside producing the illumination and they are going to last significantly longer than what your incandescent bulbs would.

They typically last about 50 times longer and they're going to be completely maintenance free because it's sealed inside this assembly. With the incandescent style, the bulbs are replaceable but they're not sealed tight. So, if you get water in there, it can cause it to corrode and things can start to break down on the inside. It can cause the bolts to short and prematurely fail. With the entire assembly being sealed, that's going to further increase the life of our lens. All the same features are going to be true with our red diodes as well. These make great replacements for your boat trailers since they can be submersible.

So whenever you got to load your boat in and out, it's no big deal that this light may go completely underneath the water.I've gone ahead and turned the lights off so you can see what they're going to look like and you see how it's this nice clear lens and you see the circuitry behind it. It just really makes it look more modern, more techie than your old style lenses would. We've got an old style here that we're going to be replacing and you can see how the amber just gets foggy and it starts to look dirty and just old and wore out. The clear lenses, while they will overtime not be quite as clear, they maintain a cleaner look than the older styles do.Another nice feature is that we're back here on our red one and it has a clear lens as well, so they'll all look exactly the same. Your lights in the back end, the front, will look the same when your lights are off. This is nice if you want your trailer to have a more uniform look. Both the Amber and the red lights are going to be P-2 rated, which means that they are designed to work as side marker lights.

They're also both going to be DOT compliant in all States, keeping you safe and legal. We can see our old light here, and this is why we're going to be replacing it. This old one here is damaged. Our new light's going to make a great replacement or upgrade if you've got incandescent bulbs and you're just wanting to get those out of there for something more modern, that's more efficient, and maintenance free, that will last longer. When you're wanting to replace it, you'll want to first remove your old light. If you can reach in the backside, pushing it out from the back's usually the easiest way.

If not, you can use a screwdriver to work it out of the grommet. We can then disconnect our electrical connector on the back side. This is just a standard two-prong wire, so we're going to disconnect that. If your bulb was hardwired, you would need to cut the wires to remove it.Now, this connector is going to be necessary to install our new lights. So, if you do not have this connector on your trailer, you'd want to pick one of these connectors up here at etrailer.com so you can quickly connect your new light. We can then clean out any dirt that's inside of our grommet there, just to make it easier to get our new light in. A lot of times, the easiest way to do that, is just to pop the grommet out, knock the dirt out, and put it back in. If your grommet is damaged and you need a new one, we have some available here at etrailer.com, which you can purchase along with your lights. We can then take our new light and plug it in. The new light does come pre-greased with dielectric grease, so we don't need to add any, but if you want to add more, you certainly can. If you need some dielectric grease, you can get some at etrailer.com here. So, we're just going to take the standard two wire connector and just plug it right in to the back of our new light. Then we can insert the light into our grommet and we're ready to turn on our lights and test it out. With everything working properly, you can then turn your lights off and replace any other lights that you need to on your trailer using the same procedure. If you're installing ones in the rear using the red lenses, you'll do that exactly the same as well. And that completes our look at Optronics 2.5 inch clear lens led side marker lights.

  • Recommended 2" Diameter Submersible White LED Light
The best option for a 2" diameter, submersible, WHITE LED light is going to be the Miro-Flex LED Utility Light item # OPT57FR. These won't be stamped DOT approved because they are not reverse lights. We don't have any options that are. You will want to check with your local highway patrol office to see if you can run white lights on the side of your trailer. To help with your installation you can use the 2-Wire Pigtail item # A45CB or the Right Angle 2-Wire Pigtail item # A49PB.
