This semi-custom SportRack roof rack easily installs on your vehicle's bare roof so you can carry extra cargo to your next destination. Adjustable, rotating footpads combine with an easy-to-use numbering system to make the rack conform to your roof for a good fit.

A unique numbering system is inscribed on the crossbars to aid in installation. This system corresponds to numbers noted in the easy-to-read application guide. First, find the number indicated for your car, and then slide the roof-rack feet along the crossbars until they line up with the appropriate number for your application. Tighten the feet in place with the included Allen wrench.

Refer to the application guide to find specific measurements that allow you to properly position the rack on your roof. To begin installing the roof rack on your vehicle, open the passenger's- and driver's-side doors. Place the front crossbar first, and make sure that the screws that hold the clamps in the roof-rack feet are loose before positioning the feet on your roof.

Before attaching the clamps to the door jambs and tightening them down, you need to make sure that the feet and pads are oriented correctly. The bottom of each foot can be rotated to better fit the slope of your roof. Make sure that the feet are sitting flush against the roof.

Once the feet are properly positioned, attach the clamps to the door jambs and tighten via the screws in the feet. After the front crossbar is positioned, review the instructions for the measurements needed to place the rear crossbar and repeat the same process for that crossbar.

Once everything is tightened down, place the locking covers over the feet to deter theft of the rack.

SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack for Naked Roofs Review

Video Transcript for SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack for Naked Roofs Review

Today we'll be reviewing the SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack System for Naked Roofs. This economically priced removable roof rack system is going to clamp to your vehicle's naked roof. It's got a square bar design with a steel construction so it's going to accommodate a variety of accessories such as bike racks, ski carriers and cargo baskets just to name a few. You're going to get two crossbars. This is going to support your accessories. You're also going to get four feet, two per crossbar. The feet are going to have the nice coated clamp so it's not going to damage your vehicle.

You're also going to have the pad on the bottom of the foot to protect the finish that goes around the roof line of your vehicle. Each foot pack is going to have a lockable cover, so if we remove the cover it's going to expose the Allen bolt that secures the foot pack to the vehicle. Once you have that installed on your naked roof you place the lockable cover over the Allen bolt. That way nobody can gain access to it to remove the system from your roof, and it's going to come with a set of keys. Another great feature about this roof rack system is how easily adjustable it is. Now in the fit guide you're going to be able to find your particular year, make, and model. It's going to list some numbers that you can set your clamps at to fit your vehicle.

You're going to take the included Allen key, loosen up the Allen bolt, and then you can adjust this as necessary until you get the correct number to line up in this space. In order to install our roof rack system we just need to go ahead and open up our front doors. We'll do this on both sides. We'll place our front bar onto the front part of our roof. Now to ensure that we get this in the correct location you can refer to the fit guide to see the distance that you need from the center of the door jam to the center of the foot pack. All right, with this side in place we'll go over to the driver side and repeat that same process.

Now with our front bar set we can go ahead and remove the locking cover, gaining access to the Allen bolt. Take the included Allen key and tighten it down. This is just going to secure the clamp around the roof line of our vehicle. We'll want to make our way from side to side, tightening it a little bit at a time to get a nice secure fit. With our front bar secured we can go ahead and and reinstall our locking covers. Then we can get ready to put on our rear bar.

Then we can close our doors. As you can see, the clamp that goes around the roof line does not interfere with the shutting of our door. Now we'll place our rear bar onto the rear part of our roof. To make sure we get this bar in the correct position, another measurement needs to be taken. Again, you can find that in the fit guide, measuring from the center of one bar to the center of the other. We'll do it on both sides to ensure that our bars are parallel and that our feet are straight across from each other. All right, with our bars in place we can go ahead and repeat the same tightening process that that we used for our front bar. This system may require the SportRack Short Roof Adapter sold separately with part number SR1116 for shorter roofs or dramatically curved roof lines. It's made from a sturdy steel construction with a black plastic coating that's going to stand up well against rust and harsh UV rays. This roof rack system's going to offer a weight capacity of 130 pounds and the crossbars are going to measure 50" long, by 3/4" wide, by 3/4" tall. That's going to do it for our review of the SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack for Naked Roofs. .

I was skeptical about how this "naked roof" attachment strategy was going to work, but now that I've tried it out I feel OK about it. The rubber is pretty thick, so I haven't seen any scratch marks. Once you get it adjusted for your vehicle it's pretty easy to mount or dismount. The only complaint I have is that the doors "don't close right" when it is attached (at least on my 2008 Honda Fit Sport) -- they get forced slightly down, which probably isn't serious, but it isn't good for them either. This also means the weatherstripping doesn't fully seal, so I hear more wind noise when driving (not counting the noise the bars and bikes add). It hasn't rained on my vehicle while this is attached yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if a little water leaked through too. This is my first rack mount, and all in all I'm satisfied with it. It was a reasonable price, was easy to install, and doesn't feel like it's going to loosen up and fly off. 138909

Took longer than expected (11 days) for the roof rack to show up but once it did I had it installed on my 07 Prius in about a 1/2 an hour . The quality far exceeded my expectations ! Seems to be comprable to a Thule rack at about half the price . Makes a little noise at highway speed but not too bad . I think I'll skip the fairing . Very pleased ! 80114

Can you confirm this rack system will fit a 2009 Chevy Aveo5 hatchback? Thanks.

I double checked SportRacks fit guide and the SR1002 will fit 2004-2011 Chevy Aveo 5DR.

Its been a year since I installed the rack on my Prius. In that time Ive added a Thule Yak Stacker and have hauled 2 kayaks several times with no issues at all . I have also hauled 2x4s 20 miles down the highway with no problem . I left it on my car all winter long and it showed very little effect of having been out in its first NH winter. I m still very pleased and confident that I made a great purchase !

I like the design. One of our cross members did have a significant gouge (straight out of the box) in the plastic casing that wraps the cross member but I didn't have time to return it before I needed to use it. It is pretty sturdy system overall but the clamp's design does not force each clamp to pinch as much as it should. As the clamps are tightened, they begin to stretch and slip up off of the car's overhead structure. The design should have an additional adjustment on each end that cantilevers the top of the clamp to pull out on the top which would force the bottom to pivot/ push into the car more. I was worried during our travel that it would be jolted and then slip off of its install point. So the install would require the installer to place the assembly, tighten each opposing cantilever adjustment while simultaneously and incrementally tightening the other adjustment crew for snug fit in the vertical direction. 144184

This rack is made by Thule and the quality is solid and the price about 1/2 of a Thule. The directions could be better - the bolt under the lock needs to be backed off all the way and the mount giggle a little to get it to conform to the roof lines on the Prius. Other than that, very easy to install with the included allen wrench. The rack feels like it's welded to the roof - I can grab it and shake the car. etrailer has EXCELLENT sales support and follow through - really top of the line! 91879

The rack is still rock solid and working great. However once the rainy season started I noticed that rain was entering through depressions in the weatherstripping where weatherstripping is in contact with the rack support. Eventually, the weatherstripping was somewhat damaged by the rack.

Thank you for the feedback Ron! We are glad to hear you have enjoyed the racks. We offer 10 different models, one of which will typically fit nearly any vehicle, so the instructions are left somewhat vague, as the racks are not vehicle specific like the Thule systems. Each vehicle on which a SportRack is being installed may be slightly different as they cover many models. Thanks!

Can I get a longer load bar for a Sportrack? I need the width for two trikes. Thanks

comment by: will - 07/26/2013

SportRack does not offer their bars outside of the kits. Even if they did, the measurement system may be off and you would not be able to use the measurements in the instructions. The systems we have where you could elect to use longer bars come from Thule and Yakima, in particular their square and round bar systems respectively.

The rack is well made and I have no problem with the quality of the manufacture or appearance. Etrailer's service was absolutely perfect and I will gladly use them again in the future. The downside is the fit is "generic" as a made for my car model adapter set for my Thule racks is no longer produced. Because of the "fits many models", the side plates for the rack hold my door slightly ajar and the wind noise that results from the top of the door not closing fully is really bad. I've tried moving it forwards and back but no bueno. IF you need a rack and no specific kit is available I'd say get this but I may have to take it off as the fit and resulting noise is wearing me out. 141611

Do not fit well especially with the heat. The rubber heats up and does not stay put. Actually one of the rubber pieces on the rack that connect to the bar popped out where it's rather cheaply pieced together. These connectors actually damaged the plastic like resin or coating the car has on the upper part of my doors when I clamped them down. They don't hold well at all and I spent the entire trip worrying I was going to lose everything. Any undue pressure to like using tie downs and they pop right out of place. GEEZ 91864

This works great you just really have to make sure the rack is on there very tight to where you can't pull it off with your hands. Also you have to strap it down so that it does not make the bars flex or they will loosen and cause problems. 145810

Easy to install. Took me about 35 minutes. Seems very solid so far. I haven't had the board on it yet, but this rack is exactly what I was looking for (with locks) at a very decent price. I recommended you guys on Facebook. I searched for an install video on Youtube that was helpful too. Thanks for offering this product. If I went with Thule's product including locks it would have cost me 300 bucks more. 133134

Product arrived on time, in good shape. Instruction were OK. Installation went well and produce finishes were, OK. The cross bar had two digs in the plastic coating on the bar. Neither one broke through to the metal. I'm pretty sure it did not happen during transport, as the marks were in the middle of the bar and the system was packed well. In all would recommend both supplier and product. 162680

Had to fiddle with it to get a good fit, but should do the job of carrying my 90 lb Car top tent...It's rated te 130 Lbs. Hums above 45 MPH due to the square cross bars, I put a swimming noodle over it for now and that quieted it down. Hopefully it will be quiet when I get the tent mounted. Good product, Dave B. 172854

Hi,Can you please confirm that SR1002 fit bare roof Nissan Sentra 2010 without additional hardware? What is the difference between SR1002 and SR1005?thanks,Shan

comment by: Shan - 07/15/2013

I double checked with SportRacks fit listings and the SR1002 is the correct rack for a 2010 Nissan Sentra. There are a about 8 different configurations of these kits. Differences include bar lengths, clip shape, base design, and foot pad shape/angle. No other parts are needed as they are complete kits. Specifically, on those two kits, all those differences apply save for base design.

  • To carry a kayak on the roof of your 2009 Nissan Sentra you would start with a roof rack like # SR1002. Then you would add a kayak carrier like # SR5512. The saddles will protect the kayak from damage from the roof rack. The less expensive option is to use a foam block set up like # SR5525. You place the foam blocks on your bare roof then grab a buddy to set the kayak on them. Next use the include blue straps to go over the kayak, Open the doors on the vehicle and run the straps through...

  • Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier Recommendation for 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
  • Yes, the SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack, # SR1002, is one of the roof rack options available for your 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx with a bare roof. As for the 2007 Mazda 6, the SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack to fit that vehicle is part # SR1010. The # SR1002 was not designed nor has been tested to fit on the Mazda 6. Now for a kayak carrier that will work with the SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack, # SR1002. A couple of my favorites are the SportRack J-Style Kayak Carrier, # SR5511,...

  • Roof Rack and Cargo Basket for 2002 Honda Accord 2-Door
  • The SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack consisting of parts # SR1002 and # SR1116 is indeed a correct fit for your 2002 Honda Accord 2-door. When installed on your roof the two square cross bars will be separated (as measured from the center of one bar to the center of the other) by 23-1/2-inches. The Curt cargo basket you referenced, part # C18115, requires that the vehicle cross bar spread be one of three specific distances (15-, 22-, or 29-inches) in order for its mounting hardware to install...

  • Locking Roof Rack for a 1999 Toyota RAV4 with naked Roof
  • The issue is that you have to match the bars you have with the proper mounting feet. There aren't a lot of options for locking feet or towers. There are some but they would not accept square bars. Rhino Rack has an option using the following parts: # DS118B and # DK021. Or you could use SportRack roof rack # SR1002 for a 4-door model of the 1999 Toyota RAV4 or # SR1002 with # SR1116 for a 2-door model. Any given vehicle requires a certain fit kit and bar length for a proper fit....

  • How to Carry 4 Bikes On a 2012 Toyota Prius with a hitch Mount Bike Rack and Roof Rack
  • Trailer hitch # 24847 will fit a 2012 Prius II, III, IV, and Prius V. It is a Class I trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. The Thule Vertex, # TH9029XT, will fit a Class I trailer hitch, however, you will be limited to carrying a maximum of 2 bikes on a Class I trailer hitch. Class I trailer hitches cannot support the extra torque of a third or more bikes the extra distance from the receiver. It would be like using a cheater bar to loosen a lug nut on a tire. I recommend going with...

  • Roof Rack and Kayak Carriers for 2009 Honda Fit Sport
  • You can go in one of two possible directions for transporting your two kayaks on your 2009 Honda Fit Sport. One is indeed to install a roof rack and rack-mount kayak carriers such as the J-style units you referred to. The other option that will be far lower in cost is to skip the roof rack entirely and use a foam block type kayak carrier that will work on your naked roof. These kayak carriers are inexpensive, very light in weight and easy to install and remove. Since you Fit Sport have...

  • How To Carry 4 Bikes On a 2013 Toyota Prius
  • The trailer hitches that are available for the 2013 Toyota Prius are all Class I trailer hitches. The Thule Apex # TH9025 will fit a Class I trailer hitch but you will be limited to a maximum of 2 bikes because of the Class I trailer hitch. The restriction is because Class I hitches cannot handle the extra weight of a third or more bikes that far from the receiver. It is like using a cheater bar to loosen a lug nut on a wheel. There is too much torque with more than 2 bikes. There...

  • Roof Rack and Roof-Mount Bike Carriers for 2008 Honda Fit Sport
  • In order to carry 3 or 4 bikes on your 2008 Honda Fit Sport you will indeed need a roof rack. Trunk mount carriers won't work on your vehicle and the hitches offered for your car are only light-duty Class I types that can handle only two bikes maximum, so a roof rack it is! I do suggest you refer to your owner's manual (or confer with your local dealership) to confirm the amount of weight the Fit's roof can safely handle. You'll want to be sure the combined weight of the roof rack you...

  • Will SportRack Frontier Semi-Custom Roof Rack # SR1002 Install Without Scratching Car
  • Any roof rack that affixes to your vehicle roof line will naturally put some pressure on the mating surface. However, as long as you install the rack as detailed by the manufacturer instructions, tighten as directed and use it within its weight limits, there should be no issue with damage to your vehicle. Since these racks are semi-custom, they are designed to mate with the specific contours of your vehicle. There is a layer of rubberized foam padding on the base of the rack feet; there...

  • Spread of Roof Rack Crossbars Installed on 2011 Honda Civic
  • The manufacturer recommends a specific bar spread for two main reasons. 1) At the recommended spread, the feet and clips of the rack will make the most secure contact with the vehicle roof. 2) The spot where the manufacturer recommends placing the front and rear rack feet represents the strongest spot on the vehicle roof. This is why significantly changing the bar spread is not recommended. Yakima offers a standard round bar rack that when installed offers a bar spread of 32...

  • How to Carry 4 Bikes on a 2012 Honda Crosstour
  • All of the trailer hitches for the 2012 Honda Crosstour, see link, will be visible below the rear fascia on the vehicle. Take a look at the picture I have included that shows what I mean. All of the hitches are Class I hitch which does mean that you will be limited to 2 bikes and you will have to have a Class I compatible bike rack. To carry 4 bikes I recommend a combination of a hitch and hitch rack and a roof rack. For a hitch I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24852. And for...

  • Roof Rack and Extension Adapter for a 2008 Hyundai Accent 3-Door Hatchback
  • Depending on what you want to carry on the roof of your 2008 Hyundai Accent 3-Door hatchback, you may need an adapter. The crossbar spread without an adapter will only be about 13-1/2 to 18 inches between the bars (depending on the rack, see link). I recommend going with a Yakima roof rack using the following parts: Crossbars, # Y00408 Q99 Q Clips, # Y00699 Q130 Q Clips, # Y00730 Q Towers, # Y00124 Q Stretch Kit, # Y00134 The stretch kit will make the bar spread 30 inches instead...

This roof rack is designed to clamp on to existing roof rails that run front back on the vehicle roof. Instead, you will want to check out the SportRack Frontier Roof Rack, # SR1002. This roof rack was designed with feet that clamps to your roof and door jambs. You will not need to purchase an adapter or additional accessory to install or use this roof rack.

  • Bike Carrying Options for 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege with Tall Factory Spoiler
  • According to my contacts at Thule, their Archway trunk mounted rack, part # TH9009XT is designed to fit over most factory spoilers, including the standard shorter spoiler that Mazda used on the Protege. Thule has not tested the fit with the tall spoiler, and having looked at a photo of it, I sincerely doubt if it would clear the spoiler. If the fit of the Archway is in doubt, then it is almost certain that the Passage will not clear the tall spoiler. A hitch mounted rack would be an...

  • Roof Rack, Snowboard Rack and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2013 Honda Accord
  • The first thing you will need to carry snowboards, skis and bikes on the roof of your 2013 Honda Accord 4 door sedan is a roof rack like the SportRack roof rack part # SR1002 that you referenced. However, this rack is not confirmed to fit your vehicle so I would not recommend it for you. The rack can accommodate a variety of accessories, and includes locks to secure the rack to the roof of your vehicle. The weight capacity of this rack is 130 lbs, but you would be limited to the capacity of your roof if it is less than that. You did not say what the intended use will be, so I linked you to a couple of our product pages for bike racks and cargo carriers for roof racks.

You will want to consult your owners manual to determine the roof capacity of your vehicle and be sure not to exceed the lower of the two figures.
