Video Transcript for Yakima HighRoad Roof Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima HighRoad Roof Bike Rack, part number Y02114. The Yakima HighRoad is a great bike rack that can hold up to one bike on your roof. Instead of having to remove your front tire for a fork mount, this actually grips it by your front tire as well as your rear tire. Therefore, there's no frame contact at all as well. The rear wheel strap here is adjustable to accommodate bikes of different sizes. Then we also have this Torque-Rite knob at the front.

Once you tighten that down, it'll give two to three audible clicks, and you know your bike has secured to the rack. It has several points where you can install a lock cores to. We have a integrated cable lock here at the back as well as locks where our bike rack actually attaches to the roof rack system. These lock cores are sold separately and the part number to that is Y07202. With everything installed on the bike rack, it's not going to interfere with most hatches or trunks, as you can see here. There's plenty of space in between the two.

This bike rack is a low profile design, which minimizes wind noise while you're driving. The maximum weight for your bike can be 45 pounds, with a maximum tire width of 3-1/4" and a wheel diameter of 26 to 29". Once everything's taken off, the hoops actually fold down flat while you travel. Now while we have around Areo Bars now, this also fits round, elliptical, square, and most factory cross bars. Now that we've gone over some features of the roof bike rack, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. We'll first set it on top of our bars here.

Today, we're using the Yakima Core Bars. We'll first push back our rear mounting point, so it fits over our bar. Then we'll go to the front of the vehicle and make sure that our bike rack is straight on the vehicle. Next we'll take our strap, wrap it underneath our bar here, then bring it back up, and take these ends here, and put them into these indents here. We'll close it down and the tension isn't really where it needs to be so we'll take this gray knob here, you can turn it to the right to tighten, or left to loosen the tension.

Once it's tensioned down, we'll put it back in that area there. Then we'll slide this piece over to secure our strap into place. Now a good rule of thumb to know if its tightened properly, give it a shake test, and go back and forth. If it can still slide along your actual crossbar, then it needs to be tightened more. Now if you we're to have a lock, you'd be able to turn that, and this would be secured to your roof rack. To make it easier to get to our front attachments, we'll open it up, and push these through the bottom like so, and take this point, put it in here, and close it down. You see, it's not very tight. Again, we'll have to start tensioning it down using the gray wheel here. Slide that forward like you did in the rear and we'll repeat this for the other side as well. Again, like with the rear, you want to make sure that you shake it back and forth making sure that it's not going to move along your roof rack after you have it tightened down. With our bike rack completely installed onto our roof rack, we're now ready to start installing our bike. We have our rear strap in the open position. Then we'll take our first bar here, open it up all the way. That's where the tire is going to rest in when you initially install your bike. Next, we're ready to load our bike. Lift it into position, bring up the smaller hoop, to this location here, and then rolling the tire with the hoop, against the larger hoop. Then we'll come to this knob here and start tightening it down. You want to stop tightening it down once you hear two or three audible clicks. That means its torqued to its proper specification. Once we do, you can see up at the top here, it's starting to grip the tire. There you go. Now we'll go to our rear tire and then secure it as well. Making sure it's between the spokes. We'll feed our strap through until its tightened down. With everything nice and tight, now we'll go ahead and take it on our test course and show you how it looks there. First we'll take it onto our slalom course. This will show you the side to side action, such as making turns or evasive maneuvers. Now we're at the alternating speed bumps. This will show you looks driving on uneven pavement or potholes. Finally, we're at the solid speed bumps, which simulates going into your driveway or parking lot. There you have it for the Yakima HighRoad Roof Bike Rack, part number Y02114.

Fantastic rack. Extremely smooth lines when carrying a bike or not. I stuck 3 of them on the roof of my Subaru Outback and couldn't be happier with how secure everything is. I am still able to open the hatch to store our gear unlike a hitch mount and haven't ruined the departure angle on an already long wagon. Easy to install and fit very snugly on the OEM Subaru crossbars with rubber straps. The integrated bike locks are awesome! Had them on the car in 20 minutes. etrailer was extremely helpful throughout the process of ordering and delivered a great bunch of products on time. 371511

1. One star ding for price. Fairly expensive for a single bike, especially after adding a lock core. 2. The rack works exceptionally well and I'm not disappointed with the purchase. Installation is fairly simple. It does take a bit of fiddling to get the tension down on the rack clamps (connecting it to car) but it is a simple affair, and I'm able to move it between an aero rack and a round rack with out adjusting the tension. The sliding tray in the rear is a bit sticky, so if you carry bikes of different wheelbases, you may need to add some lubrication to the tract. Front wheel locks into place (I've used 700x25 and 29x2.3) simply, and the clutch in the tension wheel is a nice addition. It would be nice if there was a quick release button (like in times past) but it spins fairly quickly to unload. The locking whip is a nice addition. I have been able to rout it over the chainstay on both bikes. However, it is too short to route around chainstay and wheel. I'd prefer to include my rear wheel inside the lock. Overall, I'm very happy with the product. 372972

After a year on the car and some 50 uses, everything is fine and I have no regrets. Regardless of the bike in use, it performs flawlessly.

Thanks etrailer! Not only were my bike racks delivered incredibly fast, they were the best price I could find online or in brick and mortar stores. I can't show you pictures yet...still waiting for the roof rack to be delivered. I was sold on your store and this particular product because of the helpful videos. Keep up the great work! 387690

The new Highroad is amazingly easy to use and very secure. I have them mounted on a retrax tonneau with rails. I love this system for when I am towing our travel trailer. The Highroad has been improved so much from earlier models. Easy to load and secure multiple bike sizes. My plus totes and skinny tires both fit great. 573458

The (2) Yakima HighRoad racks get a 5 Stars rating it was first class well made and easy to install on my 2017 Subaru Outback. What I really like is the bikes face forward and I can open the hatch without hitting the rack or bike. I also give etrailer 5 Stars rating too, perfect online ordering, free shipping was available when I make my purchase, and I received the racks when stated. etrailer communications on my order during and after was outstanding. The etrailer Yakima HighRoad install video made the installation easy. I would like to say thank you to all the etrailer staff that handled my order. 429994

Everything we expected. Took some research to decide on a bike carrier for our new Subaru, but etrailer was very helpful. Great shipping and good service. We purchased two and are pleased with how easy they are to set up and use. No complaints so far. 407207

  • Recommended Yakima Roof Rack for 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • I'm glad to hear you had a good owner experience with your last Yakima roof rack and I am happy to help you with a new one for your 2019 Outback Wagon non-Touring edition. My favorite Yakima roof rack is their black Jetstream aero-style bar roof rack. This system consists of parts # Y00425, # Y00148 and # Y00241. The black crossbars lend a clean OEM-like appearance and they will be much quieter than basic round Yakima bars (or any other bar shape for that matter) since their design allows...

I recommend adding a fairing to the setup. Yakima fairing part # Y05018 for round bars. The fairing deflects wind around the roof rack to prevent wind noise. The Yakima HighRoad roof bike rack part # Y02114 allows you to carry 1 bike on the roof of the Mini Cooper. The carrier is a no frame contact carrier so it will not damage...

  • Both the Yakima FrontLoader, Y02103, and the Yakima HighRoad, # Y02114, will fit your 2018 Subaru Impreza 5-door with roof rack E361SFL200. The FrontLoader is actually being phased out and replaced with the HighRoad so if it were me I would take the HighRoad! The HighRoad is an updated design that is compatible with more bikes than the FrontLoader. They hold the bikes in the same way and both have locking capabilities. Then, you'll mount the HighRoad as though it was mounting to a normal roof rack. If you don't have one, or bought your basket before 2010, you can get an additional bar as part # Y8870046.
