  The brackets that secure the Surco Universal Exterior RV Ladder part # SP502L to your roof can swivel to accept different contours therefore trimming will not be needed in this aspect. I have attached a photo of the swivel brackets for you. In regards to the standoffs, it would be best to use the predetermined locations which have capacity in mind but I do think it would be possible for you to move them into the factory mounting points as the ladder rack is pretty universal like you mentioned.

  The top hooks of the Surco Universal RV Ladder, # SP502L, that attach to the roof of an RV measure 10-1/2 inches from center to center and it measures approximately 7 inches from the vertical pole to the point on the hook just before the 90 degree bend. This ladder has an overall length of 84-1/2 inches, 12 inches between the vertical bars and 13 inches between each step on center.
