Randy: Hey guys. It's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at Curt hitch extenders. These are designed for use in a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening and they're going to in an 8, a 14, and an 18 inch length. This is going to be a really good way with obstructions on the back of your vehicle whether it's a Jeep like this with a spare tire, a truck with an in-bed camper or even a UTV hitch that's just buried underneath and hard to get to.This is going to get our pinwheel much further back allowing us to clear any obstructions that we might have their accessories. Here is one of the many situations where a hitch extender is going to come in handy.
As you can see we've got a folding style bike rack back here. We just can't get it in far enough before it makes contact with the tire. So by buying that 8, that 14, or that 18 inch extension it's going to give us the room to get our items in place without any interference. Now something that sets this extender apart from some others you can see and extremely durable, solid shank here goes into the backside of your receiver tube. That's going to give you supreme durability. It's going to be very, very rugged, actually quite heavy.
To secure it we're going to slide it in our receiver tube opening. We want to line up the pin hole in the extender with the pin hole in our hitch. Once that's in place use a standard 5/8th diameter pin to slide through there and get it secured with our clip. Now you can also use anti-rattle devices with this but keep in mind, since it is a solid shank we can't put anything inside we we'll have to use an external type. Now the pin's going to be a standard Class 3 style pin, 5/8th of an inch in diameter. So if you don't already have one of those at home be sure to pick it up.
It's not included with the extender. Now overall this going to be a very heavy-duty extender. It feels heavier than just about any of the other ones that we've dealt with. Now this is a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. That's going to be very compatible with a lot of accessories out here. This would be like what they consider would be like a Class 3 size.
Pin hole here on the side is going to be 5/8th of an inch in diameter and just like a receiver tube opening on a hitch. So any anti-rattle devices and things like that, you won't have any issues getting those in place. Now for ball mount use, I don't know that those are very important. You're going to have a little bit of movement with a ball mount anyway. But putting cargo carriers in here, putting bike racks in here, I would definitely want an anti-rattle there just to keep everything nice and solid. Now here's a pretty good example of what we we're talking about with the movement that we have at our connection between the extender and the hitch. As you can see with this bike rack on here going down the road it'd have quite a bit of play. So we recommend the use of an anti-rattle device here at our connection point so we can limit that and keep everything nice and sturdy. I don't think it's as big of a deal when towing but it's something to keep in mind. Any hitch extender without an anti-rattle device is going to give you that same movement. These extenders also get really good reviews from our customers. It's like Billy said, "I have a Jeep Wrangler with a spare tire on the back. Because of that, I needed this product in order to use a cargo basket so that the basket will clear the spare tire. This product fits the bill and it is very sturdy. Now when using this hitch extender we're going to have the 350 pound tongue weight maximum. That's the most downward force we can put on it. We going to have a 3500 pound gross trailer weight rating so it would be the total weight or our trailer and anything that we load up on it.We also need to check our hitch for it's capacity. Take that down by 50% and use whichever of those numbers are lowest. Also to help ensure that this is going to look good and last for a very long time, Curt's put their black powder coat finish all around everything, giving it a nice clean look.

Extend your trailer hitch receiver opening so that your can clear your spare tire when using your hitch-mounted bike rack or so that your trailer won't hit a rear-mounted propane tank when you make sharp turns. Powder coated steel resists rust.Came as described, did what i wanted it to do which was extend my Dirt bike rack out past my tailgate, so i could some Hooligan/ neck breaking [stuff]. Really solid well built part though durable, worked well have no complaints or isses with the product.
Hitch was not properly wrapped when shipped with another item and scratched the tow mirrors I had ordered. Good product terrible service
This is a very heavy duty piece! The receiver part is solid not box tube. the material is thick and strong. Only problem is that if you have a dead-end receiver box (like on my RZR) the input tube will need to be shortened about 3/8 inch as the pin hole will not line up. This is great for trucks etc. with pass thru receivers.
Very well made, the male end is solid 2”x2” steel and the female end has a steel band around the end for increased strength. Nice hard baked on finish as well, it arrived with the box damaged, but the 18 inch hitch extension didn’t have a scratch on it. I deducted one star because it is not made in the USA.
I HAVE A JOHN DEERE GATOR AND IT WAS DIFFICULT CONNECTING TRAILERS TO THIS HITCH WITHOUT GETTING ON YOUR HANDS AND KNEES.. NOT ONLY THAT BUT THE TRAILER HAD TO HAVE A LONG TONGUE. SINCE I PURCHASED MY C 45796 CURT EXTENDER FOR MY 2 INCH RECEIVER , I NOW CAN HOOK UP ANY TRAILER AND TOW IT SUCCESSFULLY AND HOOKING UP IS VERY EASY. NO MORE GETTING ON THE GROUND . I AM WELL PLEASED WITH THE CURT EXTENDER THANKS FOR QUICK DELIVERY
This gave me the extension I needed to reach out past my motorcycle lift on my RV exactly what we needed.
Purchased to use on my 2020 Yamaha Drive 2 golf cart hitch. I ordered this and an 18” receiver extension. When I placed my online order I received a phone call the next morning asking if was aware that the extension and the receiver hitch were different sizes and would not work together. I was very grateful for the call as I had not realized I had ordered items that would not fit together. Great Customer Service!!!
It appears to be exactly what I ordered. It is well built, and heavy enough to be durable. I am pleased with the hitch extender. Thank you
My truck bed camper is so easy to access with the hitch stair and extender. Having them has finished my project off perfectly. Thanks.
This product work perfectly. Very strong material, it will not bend under a load. I use it to extend out from under my UTV to attach the salt spreader.
Ordered on a Saturday afternoon and received on Wednesday morning. It doesn't get much better than that. No more bending under the rack to hook up a trailer. Thanks Etrailer
Great extender! It’s made possible for me to take about another foot length on my trailer
This was perfect for allowing me to haul my side by side with the tailgate down on the pickup while I also hauled my camping trailer with a load distribution hitch.
Tried to return bc it didn’t fit, and they wouldn’t let me. Brand new and never used. So, worthless thing sits in the corner of my garage collecting dust. Wouldn’t buy here again, bc of the super poor customer service. They did zero to help me out. So, I’ll purchase elsewhere going forward. Enjoy and hope this review helps a few people.
Needed this item to be able to tow my boat behind my pick-up with 9 foot camper. Had put off towing because I thought I needed a very long extension bar coupled with a weight distribution system...which would not be compatible with my trailer anyways. So I gave up on the idea of towing with it, leaving the boat behind on trips for over ten years. That all changed when I perused the etrailer web site for solutions. Found the solution with the Curt 18" extension bar and the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch (RM-061). With a 12 inch ball mount on the end, and securing both with a pair of Roadmaster Hitch Quieters, it turned out to be perfect. I can move forward and turn either direction just past 45 degrees with out danger of a jack-knife event. My boat/motor/trailer weighs about 1,300 lbs, so I was well within the reduced weight limits imposed by using an 18" extension bar with the class III hitch. The Hitch Quieters were like "icing on the cake," eliminating 3/8" of horizontal and especially vertical "slop" and associated noise. The boat can go with me all the time now.
Going fishing and hunting will be much easier now. Now I can get in the bed of my truck & get things out easy. I have a brand new truck & didn't want to scratch up the tailgate. Also shipped very fast. Thanks
Needed to drop tailgate when towing boat trailer.
This is an excellent product. It is very sturdy and allows the hatchback on my Subaru Ascent to open without interfering with my basket carrier in the rear. Very helpful.
Rock solid, heavy-weight, and inspires confidence. I ordered two and linked them together because I couldn't find something longer without spending a lot more and a complicated install. I had a simple problem to solve - a deep keel 22 foot sailboat at a boat ramp and I needed another few feet of tongue length to keep my tailpipe out of the water. I stop at the top of the ramp, hook up the two lengths, and I have just enough distance to keep the pipe out of the water. Of course I remove the extenders for any travel over the road. The two pieces together are very easy to handle as components and the price was much lower here than other vendors. And, did I mention that I ordered early one morning and in a different time zone and George J had it out the door in under 2.5 hours. I figure he processed my order right after he got to work and before he went to the coffee maker. Thanks George.
Don't know as I received a completely different item. Don't even know what it is.
Made towing a little vintage trailer behind a flat bed possible. Sturdy, just what I needed!
Excellent service and I will purchase products from you again!
Perfect for John Deere 835R
Perfect. My previous extension was not "heavy duty" by any means and was just a few inches short of clearing during a turnaround. This gave me the clearance I needed to turn around without my trailer hitting the camper jacks on my palomino slide in camper. Item is heavy, solid insert, and no doubt it will do what I need it to do for summer vacations. Thanks!!
I haven't used it yet, but it fits fine on my 2017 Nissan Frontier. It appears to be solid and has a great finish. I'm excited that I can now pull my scooter/motorcycle trailer with my tailgate down allowing for more cargo and camping gear in the bed. Potential buyers should keep in mind that you will likely need longer chains and a lighting wire extension for your trailer.
