When your bike rack blocks the rear hatch, this swing-away adapter moves the load to the driver's side so you can reach your gear. Sealed ball bearing pivot supports up to 250 lbs and keeps the rack swinging smoothly.
When your bike rack or cargo setup blocks the tailgate, rear doors, or cargo area, getting to gear can turn into squeezing around the rack or unloading weight you didn't want to move. The Kuat Pivot v3 swings your rack assembly to the driver side and locks at 90º or 120º. Those two quick-release swing positions give your rear opening room to work while the rack or gear stays attached. You can open the rear area, grab what you need, and close it back up with the loaded setup still off to the side.
Heavy platform racks and e-bikes put swing-away adapters under a lot of leverage, especially when the rack sits farther behind the hitch pin. This hitch extender carries a 250 lbs maximum weight capacity, with distance-based limits of 250 lbs up to 28" and 150 lbs from 28" to 40" from the accessory hitch-pin hole to the furthest point. That rating gives you a clear way to check rack, bike, and gear weight before you load up. Once everything is within the stated limit, your loaded rack can ride on the Pivot v3 while rear access still works at stops.
A swing-away setup with play at the receiver can clunk, shift, and make the whole load feel less controlled on the road. The Pivot v3 uses Kuat's patented Flatlock Hitch Cam to tighten the connection at your receiver and reduce rattle between hitch components. That cam system is paired with a hitch tube and integrated pin system, giving the adapter a more controlled mounting point before the rack ever swings out. During highway driving or rougher stretches of road, your rack setup rides with less hitch movement while the rear access function still opens when you stop.
Loaded swing arms can feel sketchy when the closure point has movement, especially with cargo or bikes hanging behind the vehicle. The Pivot v3 adds a safety pin closure system that increases driving stability and reduces movement when carrying heavy loads. It gives the closed swing arm a more secure mechanical lock before the trip starts. When the arm is shut and pinned, your loaded rack travels in its locked position and the swing mechanism is still ready to open at the next stop.
Frequent rear access gets frustrating when a loaded swing arm feels stiff, jerky, or awkward to move. This hitch extender uses a sealed ball bearing pivot, giving the swing point a smooth mechanical action when the rack is moved to the side. After the safety pin is removed, the quick-release lever opens the swing arm and lets it lock at 90º or 120º. At camp, trailhead stops, or fuel stops, the loaded rack can swing out in a controlled motion and give you usable access to the rear cargo area.

Hey, everyone, I'm Evangeline right here at etrailer. And today, we get to see the Kuat Pivot V3 swing-away hitch extender, and see it specifically here on our Ram ProMaster 2500. Now, the version we have here today is going to be the driver side version. There we go. We can bring this out 90 degrees, makes it a bit easier to open up the rear doors of your van and still have your bikes or other cargo accessories. And while you're at the campsite, you're going to also bring this out even further.
The pivot V3 is available at the passenger side as well as the driver side. The reason we're looking at the driver side here today for our Ram ProMaster van is because if you are parked at the campsite, the owner of this vehicle says he likes to open up the rear doors, he likes to open up the passenger side door, but he does not like having all his bikes in that route from the passenger side to the rear. So setting up at the campsite, being able to swing all your cargo or your bikes away to the driver side really opens up that space. Now, this is going to be a tad bit focusing on how this carrier and the swing-away extender fits on the van. One example he liked to mention was that his handlebars tended to hit up against the side of his van when fully extended.
In our case here, not going to be a problem. In fact, you're able to pivot almost all the way. It did click into space, place, and our tire is touching the bumper, but up against the plastic of the bumper of the van. So not as big of a deal if you have a smaller bike or maybe a smaller wheel base, then you're definitely going to have full clearance. The reason the 120 degree angle works great with the ProMaster is because you'll want to be able to open up your doors.
Now, our passenger side door, obviously, that can open up and our driver side door, well, that can open up about this far. Now, we do have to stop from opening up further because it does make contact with our handlebars. But still, this is more than 90 degrees open. I would be very happy with this amount of clearance behind my van. But depending on your bike rack, depending on your tire size or even your wheel base, if going all the way up to 120 degrees is maybe not as comfy for you because maybe your bike makes contact with your bumper, then you can always keep this at the 90 degree angle instead.
You'll still have a lot of space behind your van, completely open up your passenger side door, and your bikes are out of the way of your campsite. So what can we put on this swing-away extender I've been mentioning cargo carriers or bike racks. Well, you have a 250 pound weight capacity with this extender. This utilizes a combination of a lever for accessing the different configurations. But then you also have your latch and spring pin. By spring pin, I mean this safety pin that has this spring on the inside for the safety function. This makes it where you don't need it to have a separate cotter-style pin. I like it. It makes it very easy to use. Now, this pin goes inside the pivot while it is unlatched. And then, once it's all the way through, you just move the bottom over. Then you bring the latch in, and this is a one-handed operation, bring this over, push that loop in, and then you tighten this down like that. And now, you are secure. This very, very sturdy system is what gives you all that weight lasting. When trying to figure out your new clearance measurements, note that here at etrailer, we like to give our measurements from the first hitch pin hole to the second hitch pin hole because your accessory as well as your hitch distances may be different from brand to brand. So for us, we're going to say that the Kuat Pivot V3 adds 14 inches of length from the hitch pin hole to hitch pin hole. And that's how much further your new bike rack or your cargo carrier is going to sit. So if you're worried about clearances, let's say, you have a three-bike bike rack, or you've got a lot of length back there with your cargo carrier, be mindful of that extra extension. Another thing a lot of people ask is, well, can I still open up my door with the pivot on there Well, our pin here sits just a little too high up for that function. To show you, opening up the door, you can see that it hits right there. So with that in mind, if you ever wanted to get into the back of your fan through the door, use the swing-away function. I think this is a great option for your Ram ProMaster. I love how everything fits. Other than that pin there, this does not sit higher up than your bumper, which means you're still able to fully open up your doors to some extent, except for the driver side, but we saw all that in this video. Hopefully this video was helpful for you with visualizing how this may fit with your own accessory, whether it's a cargo carrier or a bike rack. Now, I did say 250 pounds weight capacity. However, if you do have things a little bit further out, that may lower that capacity further out. So always put your heaviest items closer into your van. And you can just double-check those numbers here at etrailer or you can always give us a call. Again, this is available as passenger side or driver side. So depending on where you're camping and what you're carrying and just your whole campsite setup, that can help decide which one is better for you. Pivot release pin hits stock spare tire on wrangler sahara 2026. Can not lift pin out

We are really enjoying this swing arm on our Jeep. The only thing we felt we needed to change was the hitch pin from the 1/2” to a 5/8” locking pin, felt there was too much play even with the tightening cam. Other than that it is an awesome product.
this hitch appears to be very high quality, especially compared to a less expensive one from Amazon that had very little packing material. It's super heavy duty and the pin lock design works with the 2022 Sprinter. Thanks etrailer and youtubers like Wild RV Life and Keep Your Daydream for suggesting this company.
