Video Transcript for Reese Quick Install 5th Wheel Base Rail Kit Installation - 2016 Ram 2500

Today on our 2016 Ram 2500, we will be installing the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches. It is part number RP50054-58. We have our 5th wheel rails installed. As you can see, we have various slots for different weight 5th wheel hitches as well as Goosenecks adapters that can fit. It is a traditional 10 bolt installation with 5 bolts in each rail. It is a very low profile design, so if you need to lay something flat in your bed like a sheet of plywood or a mattress, something of that nature, it won't stick up too high off the bed. Keep making it easy to tie down and transport down the road. The rails are made of a durable steel construction with a black powder coat finish. This will provide you with many years of problem-free service. Our frame brackets here do not require any drilling.

They go into existing holes already drilled into the frame with a threaded nut insert welded on, so you don't have to worry about holding a nut on the back side or anything while you install them. The only drilling that you have to do on this is through the bed of the truck itself, and that's fairly easy to do. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the rails, we will go ahead and show you how to install them. The first thing we are going to want to do is get our spare tire out from underneath the vehicle and set it out of the way. With our spare tire out of the way and the cable tucked up out of sight, we can take off this heat shield here using a 10 millimeter socket. There's two bolts on the back side. Now we're going to remove this tail pip section to get some access. To do that, there's a clamp near the back muffler. It has a 15 millimeter nut on the top of it.

Let's start with loosening that. That should be loose enough now to slide it off. Now we'll want to take this exhaust hanger off. First, let's spray it down with some lubricant to make it easier to slide off. Now we can pry against the back of it. With the tailpipe out of the hanger, we can start sliding it out of the muffler. All right, we get off the muffler, lift it up, we'll set it aside. Now on the passenger side frame rail of our vehicle, see these two threaded holes here We will be utilizing these for the installation of our brackets. On the driver's side our frame holes are currently obscured by these wiring harnesses and brake lines.

We'll take a plastic trim panel tool and pop off the clips holding into the frame rail for the time being so we can get our brackets behind them. Okay, all right. There's two different measurements depending if you have a long or short bed truck. Make sure you check your instructions depending on which vehicle you have. You'll be going from the edge of the bed. With those marks made, we can take our rail, slide it into place and we will try to center it with our rail. Now we'll start marking out the holes just using a drill bit.

I'll mark the center one too. We'll do the other outer one as well. On the other side of our rail, we'll do the fourth hole. With all of the holes marked, we'll move the rail. Using a very small drill bit- 1/8 of an inch or less, we'll drill our pilot holes on the outer side of the rails. Now we'll take our bracket onto the drivers side that goes to the rear. Position it like this over these two threaded frame holes that are pre-existing and the hole that we drilled in the bed will connect with this hole here on the top of the mount. Now we'll go underneath and we'll make sure that the hole we drilled in the bed lines up with the hole in the top of the bracket. Now that we can see that the hole matches up, we can enlarge our holes. We will repeat the process on the other side. We will drill out our hole to our final size which is 9/16. I'm using a step bit here, but if you don't have one of these available to you, you can just use a standard 9/16 inch drill bit. We will finish drilling out the rest of our holes. On our forward section of our rear bracket, there is a second layer of metal that we have to drill through using a 9/16 drill bit. Now we'll repeat the same on the other hole on the other side. The spacer needs to go between the top and the bottom layer of the forward hole on our bracket. We're using an inch and 1/8 step bit to enlarge our top hole. With that done, we can repeat the process on the other hole. We'll take these tube inserts, drop them through the large holes. Take these spacer plates, put them over the holes in the back of the bracket. Set our bracket down on top and we'll drop our bolts on through. Using the two longer bolts provided in the kit to go through the forward holes in the bracket. We'll go ahead and install our hardware on these long bolts here coming down from the front of our rear bracket. Using these conical tooth washer with the teeth going up towards the bed, and then a nut. We'll do the same thing on the other side. As you can see on the passenger side, the nut and the washer is a little bit harder to put in place because of this frame bracket that comes down for your track bar. You'll need to have some extra patience while you get that one started. Now we'll take our frame bracket for the driver's side. We'll slide the bolt that we dropped down through the top through this hole here, just like so, and we can install our hardware into the frame. The bracket is in place in the frame now with the bolt dropped down from the bed going to the other side of it. Just for a technical tip here, a word of advice, it's a good idea to take your bolts before you even put the bracket in place and test fit them into the frame to make sure that the threads on the frame are in usable condition. If they're not, you can just get a tap and dye set and clean out the threads a little bit with that. Or alternatively you can also spray it down with penetrating 00:07:56 oil and use a tube brush, in case you don't have one of those we have one available on our website. It is part number 814092. Now we'll take a conical tooth washer, again with the teeth facing into the bracket. Put on the bolt 00:08:11 get it started a few turns. Put the other bolt in. Now we can do the same on the other side. We can take this 1 by 3 inch block that has a hole in the center of it, insert it over the bolt that we dropped down from the top. Conical tooth washer, teeth facing up. Thread on our nut. We'll repeat the process on the other side. We'll take one of those U-spacers again that we used on the top, slide it over our center bolt here. Use another conical tooth washer and secure it with a nut. We'll take our other rail, set it in the rough position and we will take our 5th wheel and fit it over on top. Now with the base for our 5th wheel set on top of our rails, let's pin it into place to help secure it. Making sure we have the handle of the pin coming from the inside going out. With our 5th wheel in place on our rails and pinned into place, we will make sure everything is square and we will mark our locations for our holes on the front rail and drill them out.The bolts will be indifferent locations when we drill the holes out. Okay, with everything in position we'll mark our holes that we are going to drill. We'll do the third one in on both sides of the rail. We'll do the center one on the most forward side of the rail. With everything marked, we can go ahead and take the 5th wheel base out of place, get our rail out of position and we will drill a pile hole. Just like we did before, we will slide our bracket up and double check the position of our holes, make sure everything lines up. Looks like our holes are in a pretty good spot so we can continue drilling them out to our 9/16 final size. We'll do the same thing on the other side too. I'm going to drill this out using our step drill again. If you don't have a step drill, standard 9/16 drill bit works just fine. We will go ahead and do the other 4 holes the same way. With all of our holes drilled, we can set our rail into position. Take a spacer plate, slide it in for the middle hole on the front of the rail. Trap our bolt into it and drop our bolts in the third hole on either side. We'll grab our 5th wheel. Drop it into position, repin it. With that secure on our rails, now we can actually install our hardware underneath and our brackets. We'll slide our front bracket into position on the passenger side. Take our U-spacer plates, slide them over the bracket and around the bolt on both sides. I already had the back one in position. Slide up, take our bolt with the conical tooth washer facing towards the bracket and we'll insert it into the frame for both bolt holes. Now we will tighten these down by hand a little bit. We'll install the other 3 inch spacer plate over the large hole with the conical tooth washer going up. Then we'll put our nut on. Tighten it down by hand. We'll take a conical tooth washer go over the top holder 00:12:29 towards the front. We don't need a spacer plate here because it is a smaller hole. We'll install our not, get it tight. We can repeat the process on the other side. On our forward rail, slide this U-spacer in and the conical tooth washer and our nut. With that done, we can start tightening our bolts down and then torque and inspect. We'll start in the center and work out way out. For some of the bolts, you'll have to get started with a ratcheting wrench or a very short socket. But a ratcheting wrench works the best. Now that we've started tightening all the bolts, we're are torquing down the manufacturers' specification all the vertical bolts coming from the top of the bed first starting from the center working our way out. Then we'll do the horizontal bolts that hold the frame brackets in. Now with every bolt torqued down to specification, we will work on re-installing, as best we can the brake lines and wires into their frame pockets. With the help of an assistant, we will reinstall the exhaust tail pipe. Now that we have the exhaust pipe slid back into the muffler section, we will lubricate our hanger again and we will reinstall our hanger. You might need to use a pry bar while doing this. You take it all the way off, it's easier to reinstall, just make sure you line up all 3 holes like so. Now that we have our hanger back on, we can tighten down our clamp that holds the tailpipe section to the muffler using our 15 millimeter socket again. We can reinstall our spare tire heat shield sliding this hole here over this stud, swing it up into position . Once you have the nut started on the stud, we can reinstall the other bolts. Now that we are buttoned up underneath with everything, the last thing we need to do is put our spare tire back up. That completes the installation of the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches, part number RP50054-58 on our 2016 Ram 2500.

Fantastic I installed it with a friend which was needed. I measured three times and drilled once. It turned out perfectly because when I was done I []ped in my hitch and it fell in without any forcing involved. Just a note I purchased the Reese hitch from a friend and didnt have it with me at the time of my installation of the rails. So it was a huge relief to see it fit perfectly. The quality of the product also played a big part of the install.

The product arrived quickly and was of high quality. I had watched the video and pre-read the instructions. The video spent quite a bit of time discussing the heat shield being in the way....sure. But, made no mention of the bracket going in next to the gas tank! That 4th bracket kicked my butt :o It is all in and fit great! Thanks!!! 795620

The brackets are made well and feel very high quality. Install was pretty easy and straight forward but I think the instructions are not totally accurate for my truck. On my 2020 Ram 2500 gas truck one of the bolts I had to drill ended up right on top on an exhaust hanger mount. I triple checked the measurements too. I got it to work but could not get it as tight as I wanted and definitely can’t get a torque wrench on it. Only an open end wrench would fit. Overall though I do recommend this mounting system for the bed rails. 790525

Install wasn't too bad. Only gave it 3 stars because the slots for the 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch are a little sloppy. sure it makes it easier to install or remove the hitch, but the little jerks of the hitch moving when taking off from a stop or slowing down too fast are annoying. Guess I shouldn't have gotten the spacing perfect and I wouldn't have the issue. 474202

  • Best Base Rail Kit and 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2017 Ram 2500 with the RamBox
Since your 2017 Ram 2500 has the RamBox you will be limited to using a trailer that is equipped with a Sidewinder or a Revolution (the OEM name for the Sidewinder) pin box. We do have 5th wheel base rail kits that are compatible with your Ram. The standard kit is part # RP50054-58, while...

For your 2017 Ram 2500 short bed you'd want to use a custom install fifth wheel rail kit part # RP50054-58 to install rails in the bed of your truck. To place the rear rail you'll need measure 26-1/4 inches from the rear edge of the truck bed to the rear edge of the rail like in the picture I attached. To place the front rails you'll use the fifth wheel hitch you have. You'll set the hitch into the rear rails placed where they need to be and then put the front rail under the hitches...

  • Solutions For Fifth Wheel Trailer that is Too Tall to Tow Trailer Level with Ram Rail Kit Adapter
The best solution I can make for you would be to go with a shorter fifth wheel hitch. The shortest slider hitch we have for with a 20k capacity is the Pro Series part # PS30121 which is adjustable in height from 13-17 inches. Since I do not know what slider hitch you have right now I do not know how this would compare to what you have. Otherwise you could raise the trailer suspension with and over under kit. You can do this by moving the axles from being above the leaf springs to below...

  • Will Pullrite Super Glide Work With Curt or Reese Fifth Wheel Base Rails on 2018 Ram 2500
The only Pullrite Super Glide fifth wheel hitch that will work with either the Curt # C16427-204 or Reese # RP50054-58 custom base rails is the Pullrite that is the ISR Series (the ISR stands for "industry standard rails"). Though we do not carry these hitches I believe that would be the 2700 or 2900 models of Super Glide. As for the price difference there are regular fluctuations based on a number of factors but it isn't quality or hardware. Both these install kits come with the hardware...

  • Can 2017 Ram 2500 Short Bed with Ram Box Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer
Not every pin box on the market has a Sidewinder pin box replacement available for it. So before you buy a fifth wheel trailer you'd want to verify that the pin box of it is compatible. You can check out the link I attached to see a chart (near the bottom) with all of the Sidewinder replacements available for the various pin boxes. Or, some trailers have Reese Revolution pin boxes installed on them already. The Reese Revolution and the Sidewinder are the same thing so you might see if anything...

  • Fifth Wheel Rail Kit Recommendation for 2014 Ram 2500
For a fifth wheel rail kit that is confirmed as a fit for your 2014 Ram 2500 short bed we have the Reese kit part # RP50054-58. This is a custom install kit which means it will install in much less time than a universal kit and it will minimize drilling. You would need a slider hitch to make tight turns since short bed trucks have limited clearance. For that the Reese Titan part # RP30047 would fit and work well.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for 2014 Ram 2500
For your 2014 Ram 2500, if you have the 8 foot bed, you will not need a sliding hitch but with a 6-1/2 foot bed it is recommended to allow you proper turning clearance. The standard bed normally refers to the 6-1/2 foot bed, but people use different terms, so I'll give you both options. For your rail kit, I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50054-58 which comes with brackets specifically for your truck. Then if...

  • How to Install a Reese 5th Wheel Hitch on a 2014 Ram 2500
In order to install a Reese 5th Wheel Hitch on a 2014 Ram 2500 assuming the hitch mounts using industry standard rails (ISR) you will want to use the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit part # RP50054-58 if the truck did not come with the factory rail kit or the Reese 5th Wheel Rail Adapter part # RP30154 if the truck did come with the factory rail kit. I have attached a photo of what the factory rail kit looks like. If you do not know whether or not the Reese 5th Wheel Hitch...

  • Rail Placement for 5th Wheel Install Kit RP50054-58 for a 2015 Ram 2500
I can help you out with this installation. For 5th wheel install kit # RP50054-58 measure from the rear edge of the truck bed forward 28-3/16 inches for a long bed or 26-1/4 inches for a short bed. This is where the back edge of the rear rail will be. Once the rear rail is in place the front rail will be 22 inches forward of the rear rail. This is measured from the center of the rear rail to the center of the front rail. But I would leave things a little loose until you have the hitch...

  • How to Install Fifth Wheel Hitch in Bed of Truck with B&W Turnoverball Hitch Installed
Fifth wheel rail kits like the Reese kit part # RP50054-58 do not fit with B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitches installed at the same time. They would interfere with each other. Your best option would be to use the B and W Companion Slider hitch # BWRVK3400 which is a slider hitch that fits directly to the Turnoverball gooseneck hitch you have without needing any type of rail. If you already have a slider hitch though and do need a set of rails like what the Reese kit offers you could...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Reese Installation Kit for 2015 Ram 2500
The Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit # RP50054-58 is similar to the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Outboard Install Kit # RP56009-53. Both base rails will work with fifth wheel hitches that use the standard above-bed base rails. The biggest difference between these rails is that the # RP56009-53 will be much easier to install than the other kit because of the way the outboard install brackets face and the length of the base rails. You will not have...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch And Rails For 2016 Ram 2500 Mega Cab With Rambox
On your 2016 Ram 2500 Mega Cab with Rambox, you are correct that there are not underbed rail options compatible with your Rambox. You will need to use an above bed rail kit, but we do have kits that are custom fit for your truck. I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50054-58 that will give you custom brackets so you will use holes already in your frame for mounting. I've attached a video of this installation. For...

  • Will Reese Custom 5th Wheel Brackets for 2016 Ram 2500 Fit Rails from Reese Universal Install Kit
Yes, the custom brackets # RP50054 are compatible with the rails from the universal kit # RP30035 for your 2016 Ram 2500. You will also need installation hardware # RP58430 to attach the rails to the new brackets because the original hardware can't be used; it was meant to be torqued down just once and not reused.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch and Rail Kit Recommendation for a 2015 Ram 2500 Long Bed
It sounds like your 2015 Ram 2500 long bed does not have the factory hitch prep package. The truck beds are the same for either setup so you will see the areas of the bed where a puck would be even with out the package. For a fifth wheel rail kit you would want a custom kit that would minimize drilling and install time like the part # RP50054-58. For a hitch the part # RP30033 would be a great option. I attached a review video for you to check out as well.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Install Bracket and Rail Kit for a 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon
Despite the Power Wagon package the bracket kits for your truck are the same as any 2017 Ram 2500. I checked with Reese to make sure there aren't any variances that would cause an issue. I recommend part # RP50054-58 for your hitch. It's a custom kit to make the install quicker and reduce the amount of drilling. I've linked an install video on a 2016 2500 for you as well. I'm not sure which fifth wheel hitch you're using but since the Power Wagon only comes in a short bed these days...
