Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold and some interior lining to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11143814 Review

Today were going to review part number HM11143814. This is the Hopkins Plug-in Vehicle-Specific Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Trailer Connector. This is a custom fit part number. Its designed to fit the Hyundai Elantra Coupe starting in 2014. This is a plug-in simple custom wiring kit which will utilize the factory connectors on your vehicle to hook to and that will allow you to have a 4-way at the back of your vehicle to plug in your trailer wiring harness to to get lights on your trailer. There are no cutting or splicing required. Basically these connectors are just like your factory connectors.

Basically these will plug in to the back of your taillights. The 4-pole trailer connector, it does use the corrosion-resistant terminals. It also has a nice dust cover that when its not being used you can put on over the terminals to help protect it from any damage or elements. Basically everything for this part number is included which is all shown here on the table. It would include this powered converter module which the wiring and the 4-way.

It includes this 14 gauge, extra length 14 gauge wire which would be needed to run to your battery. Ill show you to do that in a minute. It comes with this fuse assembly, take the cap off, the included 15 amp fuse is made to go in there. It comes with a ground screw so when youre grounding the white wire. It comes with some zip ties to take up any slack of the wires if you need to. It comes with a nice packet of dielectric grease which will be used when you put them on the terminals here when you plug in it into your trailer.

Basically this is a powered converter module which will adapt your vehicles wiring system to work with the trailer. Basically this will safeguard the vehicles wiring system by pulling power for your trailer lights directly from the vehicles battery, not through the existing wires on the car so it protects those. You do need to run an extra wire to the battery, this wire here. Using this extra length of wire, you run this to the battery to power this module. Basically what you would do is when you go to install this, you go to the rear of the car and these connectors right here on these wirings will connect to the back of your taillights so when you disconnect your taillights, these will plug into them. Basically what you would do is this section here or this portion of the connectors with the yellow wire in it, this would be for the driver side so you go to your driver side taillight and behind the taillights connect this into it. Then youll go to the passenger side and this extra length of green wire will run across the car onto the passenger side and again these connectors will plug in to the connectors behind your taillights on the passenger side.

The white wire right here that has an eyelid on the end, this will need to be tightened down to a good ground so if theres a screw on your car that will give you a good clean ground directly to metal or you could drill a hole and use this grounding screw to help you get a good clean ground. The other wire that needs to be connected is this red wire, as I have mentioned, with the butt connector on the end. What you would do is take your end of this 14 gauge wire, put it into there, run this wire all the way to the front and then get your other end of wire and you would connect it to this fuse assembly and then take the eyelid on the other end of this fuse assembly connected to your battery and then put your 15 amp fuse in there, put the cover over it and that way youll have a fused system that will protect the wiring. Now on this converter module, the specs on it, the maximum amp read on this is for stop or turn lights would be 3 amps per circuit maximum and on the taillights would be 6 amps. Basically thats the way to show you how to connect this wiring harness to your vehicle, pretty simple to do. The only thing that would take a little more time would be running this wire to the front of your vehicle. That should do it for the review of part number HM11143814, the Hopkins Plug-in Vehicle-Specific Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Trailer Connector. .
