Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your trunk, behind the tail lights on both the driver's side and passenger's side. You will need to remove some interior trim or carpeting to access the harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Michael: Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at the CURT T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-pole Flat Trailer Connector. This kit is going to quickly and easily install at the back of your 2013 through 2019 Lexus ES 350. It's going to provide a 4-way trailer connector for powering your trailer's signal lights. Now it is designed specifically for that Lexus ES 350, so all these plugs and everything are going to work for your vehicle, make sure that it's all very easy, you're not going to have to cut the wires, splice anything, potentially damage the wires on your vehicle. You're not going to have to worry about any of that. This is a very simple plug-in installation, so just about anybody can do this, as long as you're comfortable using some power tools to get your ground screw drilled in, you can pretty much do this yourself. The nice thing about this kit is it is going to allow you to pull a trailer and have those light signals, so if you're driving at night, your running lights are going to be on in your trailer, your brake, turn signals, so that other drivers can see what you're doing.

If you're pulling a trailer without lights, it can be very dangerous because sometimes that trailer blocks your vehicle's lights so other drivers aren't aware of your intentions. So this kit is going to be very good for those of you with that Lexus that are wanting to pull a trailer. This is going to include our tail light converter, which essentially is going to allow your trailer lights to work from your vehicle lights, because most of your trailers run on a two wire system so that your brake and turn signals are actually being carried on a single wire, whereas your vehicles have a three wire system. This is going to combine the brake and turn signal from your vehicle's three-wire system so that it will run on the one wire so that you can properly activate your trailer's tail lights. That's not going to affect your tail lights on your vehicle at all. It's just going to allow the trailer to work. This converter is going to connect directly to your battery on your vehicle, so it's not going to pull any additional power from your taillight circuits.

It's not going to put any extra strain on that circuit and potentially overload your Lexus's electrical system. By connecting to that battery itself, it's going to draw all the power it needs without having to put any strain on your system. It is going to connect quickly and easily, and as I said, you are going to connect this to your connection points in your trunk. Those are right behind your tail lights, so this main unit, the box and these wires here will connect on your driver's side. And as you can see, these basically fit together. So the way these work, this is a replica of the plug that's on your lights.

This is the plug from your vehicle going into your lights, so you are just going to insert this into your vehicle and insert this into your taillight. It's going to reconnect that circuit so that your vehicle lights work, but then it's also going to allow that signal to be sent down to your box here, which will then send it out to your trailer. So once you get that side connected on your driver's side, you'll run the screen wire over to your passenger side and it basically does the same thing so that you get that right turn signal. Then on the box, you have this black wire. This is what's going to be run to your battery to give you an extension so that you can run it all the way up to the front of your vehicle. One thing to note when you are running this, you do want to stay away from anything that is hot or moving.

Obviously that can damage the wire, so when you're under your vehicle running it up, just keep it up out of the way of anything that's hot or that could move. There's a ground wire on here, the white wire. That will simply be mounted to a solid metal surface there behind your taillight. And they give you a double-sided adhesive pad so that you can stick this box there behind the taillight, so pretty easy there. Once you get up to your battery, they do include a fuse and your fuse holder. So you will wire this, they do include some butt connectors so you simply just put your wire in one end, wire in the other end, and then they've included your ring terminal as well. So once you have that all connected, you'll put that on the positive side of your battery and that will get you the power that you need for your unit to send that signal out to your trailer. Once everything is installed, you can simply house your four way connector in your trunk. It does come with a dust cap to keep all the dust and everything off of it, but when you're not using it, you can simply roll it up, put it in your trunk, and it'll be out of the way, and there when you need it, when you're wanting to pull your trailer again. This system is constructed of a surface mount with a surface mount technology, which basically means that your electrical connections are soldered directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. That's going to help make it smaller, but still provide superior performance and reliability and durability. So it's nice that they include that. This does have a maximum amperage of three amps per circuit for your stop and turn signal lights, and six amps per circuit for your tail lights. This does come with a one-year warranty from CURT.Now this is going to be your best option for your 2019 Lexus ES 350, but if you have a 2013 through 2018 Lexus 350, I would personally recommend the T1 vehicle wiring harness from Taconsha. One small difference, pretty much everything is exactly the same with their system. It's kind of hard to see that picture, but you can see the part number on the screen there. So basically, they have the exact same setup, very easy to plug in. You're not going to have to do much wiring or anything like that, either. The difference is in their box.So they have the same kind of surface mount technology, but inside theirs, there's a potting material. So if you we're to open up this box, it would be hollow, you could see where all the connections are being made. With the Taconsha system, there's almost like a silicone type material that is inside there so it's keeping all those connections pushed down. So even if it we're to rattle around a lot, there's still resistance keeping those connections pushed to the circuit board, whereas this, they could come loose potentially over time and basically nullify the system. So if you have one of those 2013 through 2018 options, I would go with the Taconsha personally. I think the CURT's going to do a good job. It's going to get the job done, but Taconsha does have a little bit better reputation as far as longevity, so I'd point you in that direction if you have that option. This does come with instructions to help you get it all installed. There's pictures, step-by-step, to help you. If you are still needing a little extra assistance, we don't have an installation video just yet for this one. There might be one on a similar vehicle. They're all very similar, just small differences between them, so I'd encourage you to come take a look at some of those resources here at etrailer.com. Our goal is always to help you make things easier so that you can get to the fun parts of hauling your trailer and things. So that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

  • 2013 Lexus ES 300h Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation
I have a wiring kit solution for your 2013 Lexus ES 300h but the 8 port plug you found doesn't sound like any kind of trailer wiring harness I've ever heard of. It's possible that they used a unique setup, but wiring harnesses are pretty standard so the only real way to know is to test each of those ports with a circuit tester to see if they carry any kind of lighting function on them. For a standard wiring harness kit I recommend going with the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness...
