Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

2016 Nissan Rogue

I bought this as part of bulk order of a trailer hitch, electrical harness and adjustable ball & mount. Fitting the electrics was more involved than I had anticipated due to the amount of panels that needed to be removed from the rear of the Nissan Rogue but once I'd identified where the fixings were (two visible and two behind covers on each side) then it was straight forward. I didn't see the need to run a +ve lead for permanent connection to the battery since the lights aren't needed when the ignition isn't on so used a 10A fused plug into the the 15A fused accessory socket in the trunk. I'd be interested to know if there's a reason for running a lead to the battery which then increasing the drain on the battery while the car is not running. I dropped one star because the instructions for removing panels could have been a lot clearer and I spent quite some time working out how to remove them without breaking anything. Now that it's fitted, I'm more than happy with the result.

Comments
A powered taillight converter will draw its power from a direct connection to the vehicle battery, but will gain its switching information via its connection to the vehicles taillight harness or tow package connector. Years ago, taillight circuits in vehicles used higher gauge wire and had enough capacity to handle the draw of the vehicle taillights as well as those of a trailer. Now that the price of copper has gone through the roof and vehicle manufacturers try to save all the weight they can, the taillight circuits use smaller gauge wire that can handle the load from the vehicle taillights, but not much else. Drawing the power directly from the battery also serves to isolate the tow vehicles sensitive electronics from any short circuits that might occur in the trailer wiring. Connecting the converters power feed anywhere other than the battery or where the converters manufacturer recommends can leave your vehicles electrical system exposed to possible damage.

Attempted to install like the last several curt harnesses I purchased for my vehicles. Typically you plug into the brakelights and run the cable down to the receiver. This particular design calls for extensive removal of the interior side panels to reach a harnesses that feeds the exterior light harnesses. Also, there is no available method to run the cable down to the receiver without cutting and splicing. The method that curts video showed was to allow it to hangout of the tailgate door. I did not install, ended up tossing it in a parts box since it was a couple of months before I could get-a-round to installing it.

Comments
This harness does store inside the cargo area until you are ready to use. Some people drill a hole in the trunk of their vehicle to fish the wire through then hardwire it back together with butt connections. If you attempt this be sure to use a grommet to keep fumes and the elements out of your vehicle. If you do not want to do that, here is the wiring harness that installs outside the vehicle: item # HM11143645

Very satisfied with my experience, even before I purchased my hitch and wiring harness. The promptness of the shipping and delivery was first rate. I have ordered hitches in the past online from other vendors, and in those reviews, people mentioned how bad the packaging was. NOT SO with etrailer, packaging was superb!!!! And the online videos of both the hitch and wiring harness installation was terrific. Thank you for a terrific experience. Next time I am in need of anything related to this, etrailer is my first choice to go to!!!

by:

Easy to find the correct harness since it was linked to the hitch.

by:

Decent shipping time. The hitch fit perfectly and appears to be very well constructed with very good welds. Have not installed the trailer light kit yet But looks like it is correct.

by:

I have had this in my car for a year now. I haven’t used it a lot but what I was most worried about it it messing with the computer in the car. But there have been no issues at all. I like the fact that it used its own power from the battery and not just pulling extra load on the factory lighting wiring. Other than having to run a power wire through the vehicle (which is really the correct way to do it, just took some time), everything was plug and play and worked perfectly.

by:

I watched the videos on the website and when I got it, it went right in. Our car was a bit different but I had an idea of how to do it so it went smooth. All in and works great so far!
These guys are great! Shipping was fast and every step of the way was noted.
Sorry I don’t have any pics! It’s all hidden in the car but pulls out quick when the trailer is hooked up.

by:

Etrailer.com's customer service was very helpful in getting the right product and related wiring accessories. It was carefully packaged and shipped promptly.

by:

The wiring harness was complete, and as described.

by:

Honestly, I dont have a review on this product yet. I installed the trailer hitch but have not installed the wiring kit yet. I trust it will meet the expectations!

by:

So far everything looks good hasn’t been installed yet. When box arrived there was a large hole in the side of the box so i had to open to make sure all parts were there. Glad that it looks like they all were. Most of the time you wanna wait a month to ask for a review to give client time to install not the day it was delivered.

by:

This was my third etrailer electrical kit install (having completed two Ford Escape kits earlier in the day).
The previous reviews and videos gave me a good idea on what to expect when I installed this on my wife's 2017 Nissan Rogue. By no means are these super easy, with the most difficult part being the auxiliary power wire that must run up to the engine compartment/ battery, but they work well and do not require any major modifications. The only thing I was not happy with was the fact that the plug end is located inside the trunk space and must just hang out the rear door seal when in use. Otherwise, it remains coiled up inside. Not ideal.

by:
2019 Nissan Sentra

Product works as designed. Fast delivery and accurate manual. Thanks to Etrailer for the installation video and The best shopping experience.

by:

Very easy to install. Hardest part was running a wire straight to the battery. Works as intended.

by:

The harness was easy to install and works great after a year of being installed. I watched the installation guide and followed the details instructions that came with the kit. The install went very smooth I put a towing package on my wife’s Nissan Rogue. The ride is much more comfortable than my truck so she accompanies me much more often now. I haven’t had to worry about a thing. Just hook up and go.

by:

I didn’t get this installed before I totaled the vehicle :(. So I can’t really comment on it.

2014 Nissan Rogue

Typically, I do not review products because I purchase them after researching and I know what I am buying. That being said, the trailer hitch and related items that I bought from etrailer came as expected. The real review is for etrailer. I searched for my trailer hitch and came across etrailer and watched the videos for my SUV, a 2014 Nissan Rogue. I watched several times and then made my purchase. The items arrived and went on the Rogue EXACTLY and as EASILY as was shown in the videos by etrailer. Everything was right on!! It was like having them there to give me a hand, sounds cheesy, but it's true. Should the need arise again for trailer parts, I will buy from etrailer. If anyone asks me where to go for trailer parts, I will send them to etrailer. This was a great experience. (say this with an Arnold Shwarzenegger accent) I'll be back!

This worked well for me. Had to install a hitch and light kit in a remote location to help daughter move, and everything worked well and installed as easily as possible. Very satisfied with purchase.

No problems with this installation. I ran the connector outside through a rubber drain plug in the floor for a neat, permanent install. Ran the positive wire to battery along the underside and through frame in places.

Comments
Still working fine.
Akom - 05/13/2021

by:

The installation video was very helpful — I was able to install quickly and even pretty easily. The harness connectors fit my vehicle exactly as intended. One slight drawback: having the converter on the driver’s side makes it a little inconvenient to run 12v from the battery, as the easiest wiring path from the engine compartment is with the hydraulic lines on the passenger side.

Great video instructions and easy install. You will want to use ramps or a jack to lift the vehicle to make it easier to run the brown wire to the battery connection.

Ask the Experts about this CURT Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • Why Does Curt Wiring for a 2014 Nissan Rogue Have to Run to Vehicle Battery
The reason you want to run the power wire all the way up to battery is so that you bypass all of the delicate wiring of your vehicle. The power wire is required on trailer wiring harnesses for some vehicles because the electrical system on those vehicles cannot handle the amperage draw associated with trailer lights. If you ran the wire to a 12 volt accessory circuit this would defeat the purpose of that and would void the warranty of the harness plus potentially damage your vehicle wiring. I...

  • Can a Trailer Wiring Harness be Powered by a 12 Volt Outlet at the Back of a 2014 Nissan Rogue
Some 12 volt outlets only have power when the vehicle is on. Otherwise if one doesn't have power then it is likely the fuse for it. But you can't use the power outlets to install a wiring harness such as # C56033 if that is your plan. The reasons are that doing so will void the wiring harness warranty because it is not tested or designed for that type of installation. The circuit for a power outlet could be overloaded by the draw of a trailer wiring harness. And if attached to a power...

  • Can Power Wire on Trailer Wiring Harness be Wired to Separate 12 Volt Battery Instead of Car Battery
Technically you could wire a powered trailer wiring harness such as # C56033 to a separate 12 volt battery. However, without an alternator to maintain the charge of the battery, the trailer lights would drain the battery and you would not know it. It will also void the harness warranty. Because of this I strongly advise against this method of installation. The harness should always be connected to the vehicle battery and not any other power source. Routing the power wire is not all that...

  • Can 12V Outlet In Rear Of 2014 Nissan Rogue Be Used For Wiring Harness Power
We do not recommend using the 12 volt power outlet in the rear area of your 2014 Nissan Rogue when connecting a circuit protected wiring harness like part # C56033 because it has a higher rated fused circuit that could allow more power to be drawn through the wiring harness and potentially damage either the harness or the vehicle. This harness has not been tested with the installation using the rear power source and could void the warranty. I have attached a link to an installation video...

  • Does a Wire Have to Be Run to the Battery to Install the Curt Trailer Harness # C56033
We understand your laziness, routing a wire from the rear of a vehicle to the battery seems a bit involved considering how easy the rest of the wiring harness part # C56033 install is. But you have to do it. If you don't run the power to the battery you could overdraw the circuit you attach it to and blow the fuse or even potentially damage the circuit. I attached an FAQ article to the right with some tips on routing the power wire that you should find informative.

  • Why Does Trailer Wiring Require Black Power Wire to The Battery
Not all vehicles can handle the additional amperage draw of trailer lights so the wiring harness requires a power wire to the battery. Some vehicles do have higher rated circuits that can handle powering the trailer lights without a power wire to the battery. You may not have an issue since your lights are LED and draw very little power but If the custom wiring harness available for your vehicle has a black power wire I do recommend to attach it to the battery.
