Video Transcript for The Low-Down on the Bike Rack Adapter for Stromberg Carlson Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier

Ola neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at a bike rack adapter for the Stromberg Carlson Cargo Carrier. Having a cargo carrier for your vehicle is a great, universal tool that can allow you to put a lot of different things on it. One of those things is generally not bicycles as there's no way to mount them on here, well, this bike adapter changes that. You're able to put two bikes on here and with a cargo capacity of 500 pounds, it can be a heavy ebike, it can be pretty much whatever size you need assuming that the wheelbase fits in the cargo carrier itself. The bike adapter for the cargo carrier will accept up to two and a quarter inch wide tires, so that might not allow you to have your fat tire bikes on here, or some chunkier mountain bike tires that go over that two and a quarter inch measurement. So as you can see, I have a standard mountain bike here, as well as a road bike, and it's able to adjust to both of those perfectly.

Also, the fact that this is mounted to your own custom wheel base on your bike means that you can put women's bikes or children's bikes on here with no problem. Having a cargo carrier is great because you can carry cargo obviously, having a bike rack allows you to carry a bike, but most times you can't do both, that's not the case here. We have both of our bikes loaded up, and we also have our cargo loaded. We also still have space on both sides to add a few more little parcels of cargo if you need to. The cargo carrier does have a weight capacity of 500 pounds, so just make sure you have the weight of your bikes and also weigh your cargo if you're gonna load that up.

So the straps are included in the kit and with the available mounting holes on the frame itself, you can find a bunch of different spots to make sure you have a secure connection. With both of these hoops and the strap wrapped around this, you can see the bikes pretty sturdy. Now, I wouldn't want to use this on a carbon fiber frame just because you are mounting to the frame for that extra stability, but other than that, it should hold your bike in place quite well once these are cinched down. The hardware is included and you can really mount this pretty much anywhere in this mesh area, assuming that you are adjusting it to the wheelbase. Now with that, once you have it set and dialed in for a specific bike, you will have to remove the hardware and move it to account for a different wheelbase when putting a different bike on there.

But if you're like me, I kind of ride my same bikes over and over so once I set it to my bikes, it should be good to go. So now that we've gone through some of the features of the bike adapter for the cargo carrier, I want to take it out on our test course and see how it actually acts when hitting some bumps and doing some evasive maneuvering. So through the test course, I was checking my rear view mirror to see if we had any sway. So we're going over a series of bumps, to simulate rough riding, or off-road trails, we also do some of these of maneuvering that you might encounter during unpredictable driving. Now, looking at the bikes in the rear, I can see the sway is very minimal, in fact, it is a platform style with the cargo carrier attachment, so, you have a lot more stability compared to a hanging style rack.

I really do like the fact that the bikes are stayed in place and I didn't have to worry about them falling or hitting each other. So the bikes on the cargo carrier itself hold very sturdy, the only issue I really had was the wobbling of the rack itself. So, side to side action, you can see it moves in the actual receiver itself. If you want a little more stability to hold that firm, you can add a anti-rattle device that we do have here etrailer. With the bikes off the carrier itself, you can see the attachments for the bike rack. Now, we did have to custom fit it to each bike, as we said, so you can see that the mountain bikes wheelbase was slightly different. The tire was larger here so this had to sit back, which in turn, put this further back. So, as long as your wheelbase is in between that 60 inches, you should be good. Now it does fit on the inside, and I did notice that it did kinda wanna sit against the frame of one of the bikes. That is something to keep in mind as overtime, this may rub against it and cause some scratching on the bottom of your frame. So that's something you might wanna check out, is measure where your frame is. And you'll still be able to get a secure hold as the tires sit in there, but it did sit against the frame. With your bikes off the rack, it's great because you can still access your rear cargo. And speaking of cargo, we still have all this cargo that needs to go somewhere. Now, these hoops are in the way kind of, but you can still load this all up and we'll go on and do that real quick. And you can actually use these to kind of hold your bags in place. During the week, I like to ride my bike, so I have my bike rack attached to the car. Sometimes during the weekend, I'll either go camping, or I'll have house projects, and I need to carry stuff in my car. Swapping out my accessories is kind of a pain, but as you can see, we still have our bike rack attachments here, and we're still able to get the same amount of cargo as before without the bike adapters. So that's a huge added benefit, you're getting the plus of a cargo carrier and your bike rack in one. And that was the look at the bike rack adaptor for the Stromberg Carlson Cargo Carrier, thanks for watching..

This rating is an average of a good rating and a bad rating:
The bike wheel holders themselves are good -- they seem quite sturdy and retained my bikes wheels well (though I had to place them to the outside, rather than the inside as the instructions suggested, as otherwise they ran into the frames / fenders / chains / etc.)
The attachment hardware and integration, however, needs serious improvement (as other reviewers have mentioned also). These come with 1/8" carriage bolts and standard-size washers; the washers are just barely bigger than the expanded mesh of the rack these are supposed to pair with. Add to that the flexibility of the relatively flimsy rack, and it feels like with a bit of jostling these could pop right off. At a bare minimum, these should be provided with oversize diameter washers instead of the washers they come with. Better would be a metal backing plate the size of the adapter's base plate. Personally, I ended up getting a couple lengths of perforated metal angle and bolting them across the cargo rack (interestingly, the cargo rack frame had a couple extra holes punched in it, in about the right locations for these, so I wonder if it was cost-optimized at some point). I then bolted the bike racks through these, giving me very secure attachment to the rack frame and not just the expanded metal mesh.

by:

Worked great. I did make up metal plates to go on the underside of the cargo carrier. Also due to the construction of my cargo carrier, I had to flip the tire holders to the outside of tires to make it work. They hold the bikes just fine in this position. The only reason I didn't rate 5 star is I think the bottom plates should be included. Much stronger and safer with the bottom plates. In my opinion.

I purchased these adapters to use on my Hitch Haul carrier and they fit as advertised. I put my sons 26" MTB on and everything worked and was very stable with the provided strap. I put my 29" MTB on and it was a whole different issue. Due to the size of the bike and tires it was just not a good and stable match. First the carrier is the standard 60" width but i had issues getting the tires to sit on the grate, i notched the ends so it would fit with no rubbing. That is not an issue with the adapters though. Second they do not come up enough to provide enough stability support for a 29" wheel. Both those issues coupled with the fact that even with them secured properly they still have flex due to being mounted to the grate. Over alll it is a great idea and would work great for a 26" bike, but would not recommend for a 29". etrailer has great prices and fast shipping so i will be defiantly ordering my next rack from them.

After looking online for a week your product turned out to be the best fit for me. Our camper has a area up front made for storage or in this case a bike rack. Installation took about 25 minutes with most of the time trying to determine where to mount the brackets to fit our bikes. I did add a metal plate on the bottom just to reinforce the stability of wire screen. Attached are our bikes ready to hit the road safe and sound.

by:

I bought these to use on an existing cargo hauler. The quality of the brackets is top notch. My existing cargo hauler is a cheap Harbor Freight hand-me-down but I already have 2 other bike carriers, I wanted this for a different option. So my bikes wobble a bit (the expanded metal on my hauler isn't very stout, but that is no reflection on the brackets. I am THRILLED to have a drop in bike carrier. My cargo hauler has been set up with turn signals and brakes, so I like that extra "don't hit my bikes!" factor and why I wanted this option. I am so glad that these were available to buy without having to buy the cargo hauler too.

We didn't like just having washers, and again because the expanded metal is not a very heavy gauge on mine, we decided to add some longer brackets on the bottom to keep it from pulling through the expanded metal.

I am very happy, this is exactly what I was wanting and by being able to order just the brackets it made it very affordable for me. Thanks!

This bike rack is great. It is easy to install if you place the back rack first allowing the bike to stand on it's own, then attach the front. If you have someone to hold the bike, that will make the installation even easier.
The rack works great. We just completed a trip with two bikes, on the rack, on the back of our 32 foot trailer. With bumps in the road, they stood fast and didn't loosen at all, even with the beating they received at the back end of the trailer. I think you would be completely satisfied with this product.

by:

First, I was surprised and thrilled that my order was upgraded on the shipment and arrived so quickly! We were able to participate in a planned ride and did not have to lay the bikes in the back of my truck. Our closest trailhead is approximately 15 miles!
The install on my cargo rack was easy and done in less than 15 minutes. The travel to the ride was excellent with no shifting of the bikes.
I am thrilled! Will try to send pics, but have had some trouble uploading them! Thank you for your promptness and service!

by:

Mounted easily to my 60" X 20" hitch mounted cargo carrier to carry 2 bikes. I did mount the inside loops in the opposite direction so they wouldn't rub the fenders on my grandson's bike. The bike is just as secure with the loops mounted this way.

by:

Great product and price. I installed mine on an old cargo carrier I already owned. I had to do the opposite direction then suggested because my road bike would have had the crank set rubbing, it is a bike issue not a product issue. Still works fantastic. The shipping was fast and etrailer's communication was great.

by:

rarely does a product work out this well for me. needed a bike carrier that was robust enough for two electric bikes (85 lbs each) this and a cargo carrier was just right and cost half what the lighter constructed pre-made carriers cost.

by:

Added these to the back of our RV platform. They work great and are very sturdy (more than expected) I used fork mounts for the front and I used a mounting strap underneath for added strength. Love the way it worked out.

by:

The product was what I expected and just what I wanted to help make a flat bed trailer into a trike hauler. So my use wasn't exactly what the manufacturer had intended, but pretty close. I used two for each trike and then strapped the trikes down.

by:

Made very well and easy to install
They
went out of their way to rush my order thru in time for the daily pickup to ensure I received this before the weekend. Enjoy the easy loading and the flexibility to use my carrier for multiple purposes. For this reason I replaced the locknuts with wing nuts and lock washers
I only used one bike set but may install the second later.

I purchased the CC-100 cargo carrier and the CC-125 adaptors to convert it into a bike rack. They worked fine with the following exceptions:
1. The straps that came with the CC-125 were not effective at holding our bikes on the carrier. They kept loosening on their own during travel. I would not trust them. I used ratchet straps instead.
2. The washers that were sent to secure the CC-125 arms to the CC-100 are too small for the holes in the diamond screen. A rectangular piece of metal with holes would have worked better. The washers tend to bend the diamond screen when you tighten the securing nuts. They then can possibly push through the diamond screen during transit. If this happens you may lose your bike. I plan to either purchase 8 larger washers or have 4 sets of rectangular plates made for securing the bike tire holders.

Works great on both my Chevy Silverado and my wife Honda Pilot.

Great for holding bikes on our bike rack on our travel trailer. A great solution for what I needed as the bike rack just had one vertical post to anchor bikes. Etrailer.com was great to work with fast shipping and a good price!

We used the bike holders to carry our bikes on our travel trailer bike rack last fall on a 4 week trip. The bikes were held in place for over 2500 miles. Quite pleased!

by:

Carrier is very lightweight and should be low maintenance, due to the use of aluminum. Not as rugged as steel, so use caution when using it for heavy items. Prices are good, service is great, and excellent free shipping.

Some rust has formed on the steel parts. I attached bike tire brackets, but that caused the aluminum to bend, so I removed the brackets and attached them to a white oak platform sized to fit inside the hauler.

by:

The bike rack was exactly what I had expected. It came in a timely fashion and installed easily. This is a great solution if you don't want to buy a whole other rack and have it laying around the house. There is also still a little room to carry other items along with the bikes.

I used the bike rack to take my mountain bike across country to Montana. The bike remained rock solid in the rack along with my camp kitchen, jerry cans, and cooler on the hitch carrier. I am absolutely pleased with this product one year out.

by:

Easy to install on my cargo carrier.

by:

Product arrived quickly. We took a previous recommendation and secured the bike holders to the hitch haul using wing nuts (for easy removal). This allowed us to use what we already had, not spend a lot of money and have to store a bike carrier.
The product has performed above our expectations. We use bugees and (not the included straps) secure our bikes to the hitch haul with a lock.

by:

Very good and easy to bolt on to a haul hitch cargo carrier like I have and transport bicycles. And if you don't want to have them on your haul hitch cargo carrier, they remove easily and store away easily.

by:

I bought these along with a Curt Cargo Carrier. They arrived very quickly and were a breeze to install onto the carrier. I was able to fit three bike (one a smaller child's bike) without much trouble. The only thing I did have to do (and I knew this going in) was remove the front tire from my bike and use a fork mount instead of one of these tire mounts. The wheel base of my bike is greater than the 60" width of the Curt Cargo Carrier. The provided straps are also a little weak. The hooks were not large enough to go around the frame of the carrier. I replaced them with some ratchet straps that I already owned. After getting them set up, I took a quick trip out to Target and they stood up fine. I will try to do another review after my trip to the NC coast next week and will hopefully be able to give it an excellent rating after a true test. See attached pics of my set up.

by:

I ordered this item, along with CC-100 to use as a bike rack on the back of my travel trailer. Once I assembled the cargo carrier, adding these to it was pretty straightforward and seems like it will be a good solution for my needs.

My only complaint is the straps that came with this. I could see no way to sufficiently tighten them, and would not feel safe carrying my bikes with those straps. I did try using them, and just driving the bikes through my neighborhood, they worked loose.

So my recommendation to Etrailer would be to perhaps include better straps with this product and charge a little more. Because before I can actually feel safe using this product for it's intended purpose, I'm going to have to buy better straps anyway.

by:

Delivery of the bike rack adapter was very quick. Installation of this product onto my cargo carrier was very fast and easy. Now when we take our bikes on RV trips, it is a breeze to unload and reload our bikes onto the carrier. This product seems to be very durable and is a pleasure to use!

by:

I used these with a Lippert Cargo Systems on my fifth wheel bumper. The bike load easily, fit well, and ride securely with velcro straps at the bottoms of the wheels.

by:

The Bike Rack Adapter is an overall great product, the straps however are not, I highly recommend heading to your local auto store and buying real tie down straps. the strap held the first trip, the second it didn't hold at all and as tight as I could make them they continued to become undone while driving.

  • Best RV Rated Cargo Carrier Option for Cooler, Generator and Bikes
I do have a solution for you, but the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 is not designed to be used on the back of an RV. Generally speaking, folding carriers are not ideal because they do not stand up too well to the extra stress exerted by the excessive up and down movement that takes place behind the rear axle of an RV.
