Video Transcript for RockyMounts Shackleton Combination U-Lock with Mounting Bracket Review

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be taking a look at the RockyMounts Shackleton Combination U-Lock with mounting bracket part number RKY3510. The RockyMounts Shackleton is great for preventing theft from your bikes by chaining them to poles or fences or things like that. It does come with a programmable lock, so you can put whatever combination that is most comfortable for you, and it's also made from a case hardened steel which is very hard to cut through. It has a spring loaded catch here so when you push it in it makes it easy to engage and disengage. It also has a rubberized coating on it and this is to help prevent rust and corrosion for the locks but also prevents scratches or scuffs getting on it as well.Plus another nice feature about this, it does have a mount to it, so when you put it in place it's ready to go with you and it's ready to be used. Now, RockyMounts has classified this as security level five, which is perfect for universities and parking lots.I'd like to give you a couple of quick measurements here. From the top of the U to the bottom, that's gonna be six and 11/16 inches tall. In between, inside the U, is gonna be three and three-quarter inches wide.

And the shackle diameter's gonna be 12 millimeters. When comparing this with other products, one that comes to mind is gonna be the club compact utility lock part number WIUTL801. There are a few differences between these two. For one, the club has an actual adjustable length from five and a half inches to seven and a half inches. It does have a wider tube diameter at one inch, so it's a little bit meatier and harder to cut through. However, the RockyMounts Shackleton does come with the mount that attaches to your bike, which makes transport that much easier.

You don't have to have a bag on your back to carry around your lock. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's go ahead and show you how the U-Lock works. We have everything set up, including the mounting bracket here. To remove the mounting bracket there's a button at the top. You push that in and that releases it. We'll set this aside for later because we're gonna be attaching this to our bike frame.Next, you wanna actually set the combination for your lock.

Right now, we have it set to all zeros just for demonstration purposes. However, to set it, on the bottom here, you'll see there's a tab that says A and B. To get it to the point where you want it to switch it to the new combination you would slide it from A to B, put your combination in, go back to A, scramble it, and you can test it out to make sure that it works properly and then you're ready to go.Next step is we're gonna go through our bike, and mount this to the frame of our bike. To loosen this up, you just have a Phillips head screwdriver, loosen these, and attach it to the frame. Now, with everything tightened down, we can put our lock into place and we're ready to hit the road. Now that we have everything installed, let's go and show you how it actually works. So, what we'll do is we'll release it from our mount here, push the button in the center.

That'll open up the lock, and then we'll attach it to the point here, push it in place, scramble the lock, and you're ready to go.When you're placing the lock on the bike there's a few things you wanna keep into consideration. You never wanna put it on the top portion of the frame here or the top bar, because that can give people leverage to try to break the lock. You also don't wanna put it too close to the ground because people use that as leverage for a hammer to smash the lock.Another point is you want to utilize as much space in between the lock as possible so people can't get any leverage there as well, which is why we chose this little bit larger pole to attach our bike to.And there you have it for the RockyMount Shackleton Combination U-Lock with a mounting bracket, part number RKY.

I like this lock a lot. It took a bit of work to make it work with my bottle cage as I ride, but if I lean it out slightly, it fits. Never has gotten in my way at all. I always forget about it until it is time to lock up. This lock has also seen some weather, as I will often go weeks with my bike on my car rack. Doesn't seem to affect it at all. Very solid lock. I would purchase again.
