Highlights

  • Charge 24V Banks From 12V Alternator: Steps 12V input up to 24.2V nominal for dual-voltage systems.
  • Full Isolation Between Input and Output: Separate grounds prevent cross-system interference and wiring conflicts.
  • Adaptive 3-Stage Smart Charging: Bulk, absorption, and float stages regulate battery charge correctly.
  • Bluetooth Configuration and Monitoring: Adjust output from 20V to 30V and track performance in real time.
  • Scalable Output With Parallel Operation: Combine unlimited units to increase total charging current beyond 15 amps.
  • Engine-Triggered Operation With Protection: Remote on/off and temp-based current reduction protect system components.

Features to know about

Properly Charges 24V Battery Banks From 12V Systems

Standard alternator feeds and 7-way connections fall short when trying to charge a 24V battery bank from a 12V system, often leaving batteries undercharged or mismatched. This unit converts 12V input to a nominal 24.2V output with an adjustable range of 20V to 30V, giving you controlled, correct charging for higher-voltage banks. You end up with a service battery that actually gains usable charge instead of hovering at a partial state.

Isolated Design Prevents Ground Conflicts

Shared grounds across vehicle and auxiliary systems can introduce noise, erratic behavior, or wiring issues in more complex setups. The fully isolated design separates input and output grounds, so each side operates independently without relying on a common chassis connection. This keeps charging stable in builds where different grounding paths would otherwise cause problems.

Adaptive 3-Stage Charging Matches Battery Needs

Simple charging methods tend to overcharge or leave batteries underfilled, especially with lithium or mixed chemistries. The adaptive 3-stage algorithm cycles through bulk, absorption, and float stages to regulate how current is delivered. Batteries reach a proper state of charge and stay there without constant monitoring or manual adjustment.

Bluetooth Control for Real-Time Setup and Monitoring

Dialing in charging settings with switches or guesswork creates risk when working with different battery types. Built-in Bluetooth Smart connectivity lets you configure output voltage and monitor performance through a compatible app. You can adjust settings or check system behavior without physically accessing the unit.

Expandable Output With Parallel Operation

A single 15 amp charger can feel limited when supporting larger battery banks or higher loads. This unit supports parallel operation, so multiple chargers can be connected to increase total output current. You can scale the system over time instead of replacing it when power demand grows.

Video Transcript for Review of Victron Battery Charger - Battery Charger - VN36ZR

Hi everyone, Steve here with etrailer. Let's take a look at the Victron Orion-Tr Smart Isolated DC to DC Converter. Again folks, this is a smart, rugged power solution that's gonna turn a twelve volt source into a reliable 24 volt power for charging or powering your 24 volt systems. Now this unit delivers up to fifteen amps at twenty four volts, giving about 360 watts of continuous power. So this is gonna make it ideal for charging 24 volt battery banks from like a vehicle alternator or an auxiliary tow volt source; maybe an RV's, boats and off-grid systems. So unlike basic converters, the Orion-Tr Smart is gonna use an adaptive three stage charging algorithm so you have bulk, absorption and float.

So it's gonna actively manage voltage and current to charge batteries efficiently and safely. And it does use, or it is galvanically isolated, and that just means that the input and output grounds are separated, giving you added electrical safety and cleaner power delivery in those complex systems. Now one feature I like is it does have a Bluetooth connectivity, so you can monitor real time performance and also configure your settings easily using Victron's Victron Connect app on your phone and there's no extra hardware required for that. So this converter is gonna support remote on-off control, short circuit protection, and also parallel operation if you need more power in the future. It measures about seven and five sixteenth inches long overall, about three and thirteen sixteenth inches tall and roughly five and one eighth inches wide.

So again, if you're upgrading your dual battery system, maybe you need a smart way to convert and manage twelve to 24 volt power. The Victron Orion-Tr could be an option for you. And as always, if you have any questions about this or any other products we carry, reach out to us here at etrailer. We're more than happy to assist you, we love helping neighbors. I'm Steven, thanks for watching.
