Shock Absorbing Ball Mount

Cutaway views of the ball mount shank showing the polyurethane cushioning

Convert-A-Ball ball mounts are designed with a polyurethane interior that helps to absorb road shock to limit bouncing and vibration while you tow over rough terrain. It also reduces the slamming and banging that occurs during stops and starts. This helps to protect your vehicle's driveline, your hitch assembly, and your trailer's contents while you're towing.

This Convert-A-Ball ball mount meets or exceeds THMAV-5 ratings in all categories and meets SAE standard J-684.

  • Will Draw-Tite Ball Mount Fit with Rock Tamers
Hey Dave, Since the Draw-Tite Ball Mount # RP45322 doesn't have that "stop" where the platform is attached to so while the Rock Tamers # ERT00110 will physically fit, I'm not confident it will stay in place. As an alternative, I recommend going with the Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount # AMSCV-4 instead, because it has similar features and specs, plus it has that stop that I'm talking about. Check out the linked video to see this ball mount in action.

  • Is Sag Caused by Trailer Tongue Weight Considered When Choosing Ball Mount w/the Right Rise or Drop
At most the tongue weight of a trailer would cause about 1/2 inch to 1 inch of sag at the ball mount (give or take a little and different for every vehicle). But on a 2016 Ford F-250 the suspension is potentially beefy enough to limit the sag to even less than that. The trailer can be off of level one way or the other (high or low) by as much as 1 inch and still be considered level. For cushioned ball mounts that fit a 2-1/2 inch trailer hitch receiver we have the following options: #...

  • What is the Heaviest Cushioned Ball Mounts We Currently Offer
The heaviest cushioned ball mounts we currently offer are 18,000 pounds gross towing weight. The tongue weight is 2,000 pounds. They are the Convert-A-Ball # AMSCV-6, # AMSCV-2 and # AMSCV-4. The most popular of the 3 we currently offer is part # AMSCV-6. It has a 4-3/4 rise and 6-inch drop. I included an FAQ and video reviews for you as well.

  • How to Determine Rise to Choose the Correct Ball Mount
To determine the rise (or drop for that matter) you need in a ball mount like the # AMSCV-4 you referenced you need to take a couple of measurements. Park both your trailer and tow vehicle on level ground. Measure from the ground to the inner top of the trailer hitch's receiver opening on the vehicle, as well as from the ground to the bottom of the trailer's coupler. The difference of these two is the rise or drop you need. If the trailer's coupler is higher than the receiver opening...

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for a Ford F450 with a 2-1/2 inch Hitch Opening
There are three ball mounts we offer that will work for the 2-1/2 inch hitch on your Ford F450 with a 2-1/2 inch opening. The problem that many encounter is that the Ford 2-1/2 inch hitches are very tight with round corners and many ball mounts like the Reese Titan Ball Mount # RP45323 that you referenced will not fit without modification. The ball mounts we have found to work on the Ford 2-1/2 hitches are the Cushioned Ball Mount # AMSCV-2, the Cushioned Ball Mount # AMSCV-4, and the...

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for a 2013 Ford F-350 with Factory 2-1/2 Inch Trailer Hitch
The OEM Ford 2-1/2 inch receiver has more rounded edges. Many 2-1/2 inch accessories, in this case ball mounts, have more squared off corners. This difference causes the squared off accessories not to fit. In some cases, some of the powder coating can be removed from the shank on the accessory as long as none of the metal is ground off. That could work on a ball mount like # 45123 since it has more rounded corners than something like # RP45323. If you use an accessory that has more rounded...

  • Can Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount # AMSCV-4 be Used with Hitch Lock
Hey Andrew, yes the Convert-a-Ball Ball Mount part # AMSCV-4 is compatible with hitch locks like the part # HRLHP2. It would not be compatible with anti-rattle hitch locks though since the shank is not hollow.

  • What Is Torque Rating For Hitch Balls Used In Cushioned Ball Mount For 2-1/2 Inch Receiver Opening
For a cushioned ball mount like the Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount, part # AMSCV-4, it uses hitch balls with a 1-1/4 inch shank. For a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball I recommend part # 19286 and for a 2 inch hitch ball I recommend part # A-90. The torque rating for both of these hitch balls is 450 ft. lbs.

  • Ball Mount Recommendation Rated for 14,000 Pounds Gross Trailer Weight on a Ford F-450
To determine the receiver size you have, I have included a link to an FAQ that will help. The Reese 2-1/2 inch Titan ball mounts like # RP45323 or the one found in # EBMK25318, tend not to fit the factory 2-1/2 inch receivers on Ford Super Duty trucks. You will need to use one of the Convert-A-Ball ball mounts. We have # AMSCV-6 with a 6 inch drop or 4-3/4 inch rise. We also have # AMSCV-4 with a 4 inch drop or 2-3/4 inch rise. And then we have # AMSCV-2 with a 2 inch drop or 3/4 inch...
