Video Transcript for Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount Review - 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Today on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 we'll be test fitting the Convert-A-Ball Cushion Ball Mount for 2 and a half inch hitches with a 3 inch rise or a 4 inch drop rated at 18,000 pounds, Part Number AMSCV-4. To provide some extra padding between our knees and the hard surface, we'll also be using the truck's mat, All Purpose Utility Mat, Part Number TX1705064. We'll begin our test fit by first getting our hitch height. This is the measurement from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube. We have a hitch height measurement of 21 inches. Now keep in mind that this measurement may vary depending on tire size, hitch style or after market accessories. We'll grab our ball mount and slide the shank into the receiver tube of our hitch.

We'll line up the pin hole and then install our pin and clip. We'll take a measurement from the ground to the top of our ball platform. When measuring your trailer you want to do so when your trailer is level. You want to measure from the ground to the bottom of your coupler and get a measurement of 17 inches. If you're trailer matches our hitch height measurement, or the measurement that we took with the ball mount in the drop position, then this would be a good fit for you. Now we'll take our ball mount and flip it over to the rise position.

We'll take our measurement from the ground to the top of our ball platform and get a measurement of 24 inches. Again if your measurement matches ours, this would be a good fit for you. That completes today's test fit of the Convert-A-Ball Cushion Ball Mount for 2 and a half inch hitches, Part Number AMSCV-4 on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. .

I own a couple of these in different drops and really prefer them over solid mounts. The cushioning does help protect the driveline of the tow vehicle and removes the harshness sometimes related to towing a trailer. Not cheap but well worth it to me. 538491

Great! These are tough but easy on the tow vehicle. Still doing great even after a full year of pulling some fairly heavy loads. Recommended!

Great/responsive service during the ordering process & the items arrived as promised. This Ball Mount is stout! The cushioning benefits work as described...much less hitch assembly noise in stop-n-go traffic than I've experienced in the past. Thanks! 139607

Super fast shipping as usual. Have not pulled anything over 5,000 lb yet. I assumed the insert on the draw bar would be bar stock - it's tubular. Will be interesting to see how that does dragging a 14,000 lb trailer to Alaska. If it doesn't egg out, I will be impressed. 269439

Your company provided me with excellent service and great quality products, it was an excellent transaction and I would recommend you to everyone as a perfect seller. But how do I review a hitch mount and hitch ball? They are just inanimate objects sitting on the back of my truck, they don't do anything. They aren't mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic, they just sit there; however I know they will do the job of pulling my trailer just fine. Thank You for a perfect internet transaction!!!!! Really well built product. I did find it to fit a little tight in my receiver. I had to grind some of the edges off so it fit and could be removed without having to hit it with a hammer. It is a really good product otherwise. It smooths out the trailer really well. 129854

Review from a similar Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Ball Mount in Ball Mounts

These cushioned ball mounts are awesolutely awesome. I don't even know my trailer is behind the truck unless I look. They eliminate all the slamming and jerking of your tow vehicle you get with a regular hitch. I sold all my regular hitches and only run with cushioned ball mount hitches. I have the 2" and 4" drop mounts. I won't hesitate to buy a 6" or 8" drop cushioned ball mount should I ever need one. Do your tow vehicle a big favor and get one of these. You'll be glad you did too...... 178866

Review from a similar Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Ball Mount in Ball Mounts

This ball mount fits very smoothly, with virtually no "slop" when inserting into the truck's receiver. Don't know if this is the receiver or the ball mount that is made with good fit tubing, or both. The mount is clearly marked as to it's capacity. The "cushioning" effect of the mount is very subjective, but I have towed our trailer with load distributing that jerks all over the place. Some surging just cannot be avoided, but on the first trial run of about 15 miles the surging seemed reduced. On a side note, I have gone to this load bearing mount as opposed to the usual weight distributing system simply to avoid all the heavy hardware. I now have a F-350 long bed crew cab which very adequately tows with load bearing and it handles better than any tow vehicle-trailer combo I have ever owned. By the way, our travel trailer has a gross weight of 13,500 lbs and the tongue weight is 1350 lbs. The whole vehicle combo sits absolutely level. The rear suspension on the truck drops under the hitch weight so that the overload springs "just" pick up some load. The very long wheel base of my truck makes sway and sag a non-issue. I'm happy! 99956

What a great way to shop for towing supplies! I live in a fairly large city, where I ran all over town shopping for the correct setup for my wife to tow her horse trailer behind our new truck. All that time and all it did was confuse me about what I wanted (needed). In frustration, I went to the internet and found etrailer; nothing but facts and specs and great prices! In 10 minutes my 2 day job was complete, I had all the correct stuff ordered at a great price and it arrived promptly at my door. Rate it AAA+ 109417

Review from a similar Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Ball Mount in Ball Mounts

Just received this mount and did the test fit with our trailer. We have not hit the road with it yet but I am confident it will perform perfectly. I am anxious to see how the cushioned feature works. We pull a box cargo trailer for business and just got a new Chevy HD pickup to tow with. It has a 2.5" receiver and hitch height is much greater than the Suburban we were using plus it had a 2" receiver. This mount is rated for far more weight than we will ever need but it was the only 2.5" size with 6" drop that I could find. We are very pleased with the product and the excellent customer service we got at etrailer. Thanks to everyone there for the very fast service and for keeping me informed as to the status of my order. well done! 105264

Now that you have driven with the cushioned ball mount for a while, do you think the cushioned feature is beneficial?

Have now used this mount several times. It is VERY heavy duty and we get no where near its full capacity. I do like the cushioned feature. It noticeably reduces usual shocks that get transmitted to the tow vehicle which, in my opinion, reduces stress on driveline components. The 2.5 inch shaft size eliminates the need for a reducer sleeve for 2 inch mounts which firms up the whole vehicle trailer connection. Also increases comfort for driver and passengers. I did make one mistake however. I figured the amount of I needed by the book. The formula said I needed six inches of . I did not anticipate enough squat in the truck with trailer loaded. As it turned out, I had to use a two inch riser ball to put the front of the trailer where I wanted it. A four inch mount would have been sufficient but I still recommend this product.

Quick shipping and no problem getting it to work in my 2012 Ford F350. I have another one just like it for the 2" ball and bought a second one for the 2 5/16". Tows my 12' trailer really well and will be using the new one for a 20' equipment trailer. 120784

this is the second cushioned ball mount I have purchased. I haul a specialty trailer daily for work, stop & go, rough terrain first ball mount I used was just a cheap hollow one witch was turning the pin hole on the truck into an oval. Bought a cushioned ball mount and it lasted 4-6years of towing 3-5days/week before one of the pins holding the cushion in finally corroded in half. I'm sure the pin could have been replaced with some work to compress the rubber again but for the price and longevity of the product I just ordered new and keep on going. 378801

Thanks for the feedback Timb. You are correct the Gen-Y Ball mounts are significantly more expensive than this one. They do offer a torsion style shock absorbing cushion to the ball mount, but do also offer many additional features when compared to this ball mount from Convert-A-Ball.

2007 Toyota Tundra 5.7L, 7X14 Parker flatbed tandem axle utility trailer 7700 lb capacity. I've only used it once since purchasing it, but compared to my previous non-cushioned ball mount it does an excellent job cushioning the load and keeps the trailer from banging the mount in the box and shaking the truck upon braking and acceleration. Very nice when hauling 2+ tons of cargo. Fast shipping from etrailer too. 131504

I give this five stars for its functionality, quite stops and same for take off. However the shaft could be an inch or two longer for my FX 35. I cannot turn 180 degrees to use higher height without my trailer’s receiver hitting/rubbing the bumper. I would prefer height as trailer stand bottoms out on aprons. I could get an extension but that would defeat purpose of the shock absorber. My advice to potential buyers is to measure the distance from pin to ball to make sure there is enough clearance between ball the bumper. Wouldn’t be surprised if it just an issue with this vehicle model. 457506

Comments

Christopher,Thank you for your review. The best option for your clearance issue is a longer ball mount. Hitch extenders reduce your tongue weight by 50 percent. I am not sure how much rise you need to be level with your trailer. The convert-a-ball, ball mount part # AMSC8
Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 6-3/4" Rise, 8" Drop - 10,000 lbs
$76.58
has a 6-3/4 inch rise and is 11-1/2 inches long from center of hitch pin hole to the center of ball hole. This ball mount also has the shock absorbent features.

I sought this concept out to cure how rough my trailers were pulling behind my Yukon. This made a huge difference when I upgraded to it from a standard, non-shock absorbing receiver. I use this with a 21' boat & a 18' flatbed - would recommend it highly. 56214

This is the second cushioned ball mount I have ordered. Due to the different hitch heights on my vehicles, I needed a 2" drop on my new Nissan Frontier. So now I have a 2" and a 4" drop ball mount. These work great, they eliminate the harsh slamming and jerking you often get when stopping and taking off. They definitely smooth out the impact the trailer has on a vehicle, especially if the trailer is loaded with any weight. A good friend recommended the cushioned ball mount to me and I have not regretted buying it. I won't use anything else now on my vehicles. 61688

  • Is Sag Caused by Trailer Tongue Weight Considered When Choosing Ball Mount w/the Right Rise or Drop
  • At most the tongue weight of a trailer would cause about 1/2 inch to 1 inch of sag at the ball mount (give or take a little and different for every vehicle). But on a 2016 Ford F-250 the suspension is potentially beefy enough to limit the sag to even less than that. The trailer can be off of level one way or the other (high or low) by as much as 1 inch and still be considered level.
