  • Why is Relay Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger Needed for Smart Alternator
The 60-Amp Relay Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-RK1260 is needed - but not necessarily required - for use with the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1225D (25 amp) or # 331-BCDC1240D (40 amp) with a smart alternator because those chargers require starter battery voltage and running an ignition feed to the charger can be difficult. Your example of a long run to a trailer is on the money and exactly what it would be needed for. I have added a cut out...

  • Where to Connect the Wire for Ignition Switch of the Redarc 60-Amp Relay Kit on a 2020 Ford F-150
To connect the 60-amp Relay Kit, part # 331-RK1260, to the ignition switch, you can tap into any circuit that receives power when the ignition is on. You may be able to use the fuse for that circuit. For your 2020 Ford F-150, there is a passenger compartment fuse panel that's behind trim panel in the righthand side of the passenger footwell. Fuse number 18 is the one for the ignition switch.

  • Can Redarc 12 Volt to 12 Volt Charger be Used on Vehicle with Smart Alternator
To charge a trailer battery with a vehicle that has a smart alternator does require the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1225D with the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger Relay # 331-RK1260 like you mentioned if you don't have access to a ignition power source. See picture for further explanation and how to wire it up. If the batteries are wired in parallel you could charge both of them with this charger but you wouldn't be able to charge them individually with a...

  • Does 60-Amp Relay Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger Need Connecting to Ignition Source
The 60-Amp Relay Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-RK1260 does not eliminate the need for the blue wire ignition feed on a truck with a smart alternator, which your 2018 Chevy Colorado does have, according to my research (to know for sure you can take a look at the battery, as there should be a battery sensor on one of the terminals). The relay kit's purpose is to give you a short cut to if it is difficult to run the ignition feed, so it is not absolutely necessary....

  • Is Relay Kit Needed for BCDC Installation if Ignition is Already Ran to BCDC on Trailer
If you have an ignition wire running from your 40 Amp BCDC # 331-BCDC1240D then the 60-Amp Relay Kit # 331-RK1260 isn't needed. There just has to be enough power on that wire to reach back to the BCDC so it can read the alternator properly. Basically if the BCDC is reading everything properly then you have enough power. Otherwise you need the relay kit. If you were having a problem running the ignition wire all the way to the BCDC then that's when the relay kit would be used.

  • Does 2017 Chevy Colorado Have Smart Alternator
According to my research yes, your 2017 Chevy Colorado does have a "smart alternator" although you will want to verify this. There should be a sensor on the post of your battery terminal if you do have a smart, or variable voltage, alternator. If so then you would need the 60-Amp Relay Kit # 331-RK1260 to use the 25 amp Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1225D.

  • Will 60-Amp Relay Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-RK1260 Handle 60 Amps
The 60-Amp Relay Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-RK1260 will easily survive use up to it's amperage rating of 60 amps. Under normal regular use there would be no need to replace the relay frequently.

The Progressive Dynamics PD9100 Series Inteli-Power Converter - Lithium - 12 Volts - 60 Amps # PD9160ALV will allow up to 60 amps power draw. It sounds like you are able to pull more, so I recommend upgrading to the 80 amp # PD9180ALV. This will charge your batteries in about 2 hours give or take. If you want to charge your battery while driving, I recommend the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger - Dual Input - DC to DC - 12V/24V - 40 Amp # 331-BCDC1240D along with the 60-Amp...

  • How to Tell if 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 Has Smart Alternator
I believe you are talking about a smart alternator and from my understanding your 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 shouldn't have one so you'll be good to use the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1240D with the Redarc Smart Start Load Disconnect # 331-SBI12-LLD. A normal alternator has a constant output of the same amount of power while a smart alternator can vary the power output depending on what the vehicle demands. Typically these are found on economy or high-end cars but...

  • Connecting 25 Amp Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger to Ignition Wire
Let's start with the ignition wire you were asking about for the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger - Dual Input - DC to DC - 12V/24V - 25 Amp # 331-BCDC1225D. What you will do is connect the blue wire from the charger directly to an ignition source via 8 gauge wire so it will be a direct connection to wiring that gets power when your ignition is turned on. If you have a smart alternator or have a long run to an ignition source you can also use the 60-Amp Relay Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle...

  • What Ignition Circuit Does 60-Amp Relay Kit for Redarc # 331-BCDC1225D Wire To
The pin of the relay that comes with the # 331-RK1260 that runs to "ignition" only needs a power source that is active when the key is on to basically tell the relay to activate. You don't have to actually splice into ignition wiring. So basically any circuit on the vehicle that is only active when they key is on would work when installing the # 331-BCDC1225D.

The Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger - Dual Input - DC to DC - 12V/24V - 40 Amp # 331-BCDC1240D is designed to work with smart alternators like yours when you use the 60-Amp Relay Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-RK1260. You will also need to use the 60-Amp MIDI Fuse Kit for Redarc In-Vehicle 40-Amp BCDC Battery Charger # 331-FK60. Your auxiliary power wire gauge at your 7-way along with the discontinued CTEK40186 will be sufficient to charge your trailer batteries. If the run was less than 16 feet you could use 6 gauge. The two relay kits you mentioned actually provide different purposes.
