Video Transcript for MORryde Tailgate Reinforcement Kit Installation - 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

What's up everybody, it's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out this Tailgate Reinforcement System for Morryde, on our 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Now this is gonna be a three-part kit and you're gonna have the hinge, the backing plate that's reinforced, and then the spare tire reinforced, which all together are gonna help your tailgate hold bigger heavier tires. Let's check it out. Each piece of this kit is sold separately. So you can get each one by itself if you want to.

Maybe you don't have a big tire, or you're not worried about the spare tire carrier itself. Maybe you just wanna reinforce the tailgate with those hinges. Also, the hinges allow you to get accessories on there. So maybe you just wanna focus on that and not so much the tire. You can do that.

But you know, if the whole kit works together really well. So if you wanna just go ahead and reinforce your tailgate, it's not gonna hurt to buy the full kit and just have that extra strike. I keep telling you how reinforced it is. I just wanted to show you compared to what's already on your Jeep. This is the standard hinge for the door.

You can see this one has much more going on with it. You have a plate here that helps out. This is black powder coat steel. So it's gonna hold up just fine. You have a back plate here that goes into a longer plate in the back.

Really adding more support to your tire and tailgate altogether. Our spare tire carrier will hold spare tires with up to 40 inches in diameter. Also the brake light can be adjustable. So there's a lot of adjustment here. If you have a bigger tire than this, we can move it up. And so that way it's still visible around the tire. You're not stuck with just one fixed point for this brake light. And with all this added on there you don't lose any functionality. The door opens just the same. It's reinforced, so it's even better than it was before. And to do maintenance on it, you have these dirt fittings where you can add grease in there just to make sure you're keeping it open and closing for you for a long time. As far as the install goes, it was pretty easy. It uses all existing holes on your Jeep. So you don't have to drill anything extra. It gives you the hardware. It's just about a matter of lining the holes up and doing it in the right order to make sure that you put each piece on there, and then tighten it down. It didn't really take us that long. Follow along and see how we did it. Now we're gonna install the full kit today. If you didn't get the full kit, the whole thing might not apply to you. You can just skip to where it does. But first step is gonna be removing the tire. Next, you remove the hinge covers. And this as easy as kinda just pull it back like that. It's got two tabs on the inside that are holding it in place. I'll show you on this one too. Just works off like that. It'll heal, you'll hear a snap, but you didn't break anything, it's just this tab. Now we're also gonna remove the hinge covers on the side. Those don't pop off quite as easy but I'm also being a little more careful on this one. I don't wanna break anything. There we go. So what I did, I'll show you on the bottom one. You just kinda just lift up on the top and it pops right off like that. We're gonna remove the spare tire stops, and those just pop out, just like that. I don't have to worry about breaking that off or anything. So you just kinda pull down on it and it comes right out. We're gonna do that for this same plug here. You kinda get on there with your fingernails. And then pop it out. One other note, Bob, that last rubber plug, and this is just for accessories on your Jeep. So this is if you've got like an antenna, you're running cords from out here to inside. So if you're not using that, you can actually just pop that back in. Now with the tailgate open, we came on the backside here of the brake light and we removed these bolts. So you can take this off and then remove the spare tire carrier itself. You you're gonna come up with a ratchet and force bit, loosen 'em all up. With the bolts removed from the backside, you can pull the light out, and you have the wire attached right here. So I'm gonna push down on this and then pull it out. Now it's in there pretty good. So I'm just gonna go up and down with it. As it disconnects, just like that. Then you can slide out the wire here, off the keeper, and get it out of the way. Take the wire, just kinda put it back through here so we can get it out of the way, because next we're gonna be removing this. And we're gonna do that by removing all eight of these bolts on both sides. With all this removed, we can come back and put the stickers over where the rubber bumpers were. And that's just to protect them. So here, and here's where we put it. But since we're not permanently installing it today, I'm not gonna waste the stickers or the adhesive. Now we're ready to start dissembling the hinge. We're gonna do it one at a time' 'cause the door, we want the tailgate to be latched. So that helps to keep in place. And if we just do this one, this one's still holding it too. So we don't have to worry about anything going wrong. First up, we're just coming to these bolts and take those out, just like that. Set those aside. Then I should be able to, move the hinge to get to these and remove them, remove those next. Now we're gonna install the new hinges. So this is gonna be a spacer plate. It's gonna go right here. And then I'm just gonna go ahead and line it up with the bolts in the holes on the new hinge. Now it'll just be easier to do it that way. So with those in place, just hold it up here match it up to the holes, and run 'em in. Now, when you go to tighten these down, don't tighten down all the way 'cause you don't want the holes to get misaligned. So, just get on there, so it stays in place, but you don't have to get super tight just yet. We're gonna get the other one started and then we'll tighten 'em down together. Now we're gonna install our spacer. Just line it up with the holes back there, and we'll take our bolt, and our star washer, kinda just feed 'em through like that on both of these. And then push it up towards the Jeep. We left that loose, so you could lift this up and get it lined up and then start to tighten it down. And then try and get in there and just start it by hand before we tighten anything down extreme. We found that a socket just using that to do it by hand was a little more helpful than just tryna get my hand in there to tighten anything down. You get that star on both sides. With all the bolts loosely installed, we can come back and start tying 'em down. We open up the tailgate so that you can access these bolts too. So you're gonna wanna tighten these down next. After adding our second hinge, we're gonna add the reinforcement frame. Just feed it in here. You're gonna match up these two holes with these two holes. Slide into place. I'm just tapping on it a little bit to kinda get those holes lined up. 'Cause it is kind of a snug fit, which is good. That means it's not just gonna pop right back out. There we go. Get that aligned and we'll drop our bolt through. Now we have bolts and washers. Let me show you what that looks like. Ultimately this is what's gonna end up looking like. So you're gonna have a washer on each side, and they'll drop the bolt through, and attach the nut here at the bottom. Drop that through, come back with the washer, and the nut at the bottom and tighten that up. Then I repeat that process, for the remaining holes. And you can't shift it around just a little bit. You saw me kinda do that on the first one you see if it doesn't go right away, it means the holes might not be completely aligned. But that's why you can move it around just a little bit and it should drop right through just like that. And again, we're gonna add our washer and our nut, and hand tighten 'em down. There's not a need to fully tighten them down yet 'cause we're still gonna need that movement to get those other bolts in there. Another tip, is if you are having issues lining up those holes, you can loosen these bolts here on the inside and that'll give you a little bit more movement to maybe get those aligned. Switching gears a little bit. We're gonna do some pre-assembly on our spare tire carrier. You got these three holes here. We're gonna line up with this here. We've got the same three. So just line those up. We'll drop our bolts through. We're gonna add a nut to the bottom and I'll show you that in just a second. First, just line those up, and drop 'em in place. Make sure you use the three bolts with the hex heads, not the Phillips. You can come back with a nut, and add 'em to each one at the bottom there. Now, I'm gonna come back and tighten 'em down. I'm just gonna put the the top and use the ratchet on the bottom. Now we're gonna add our spare tire carrier to the tailgate back here. Something you might need to do is while you're holding this in place, you might have to lift up on this to line up the holes. If you see on the back of the Jeep, they're not all aligned 100%. And that's why we left things loose. So just kinda lifted up and align it that way. So I'm gonna push up, against the spare tire care like this, to hold it in place. And we have two different sets of holes to line up for. And we're gonna go with the top ones there 'cause we don't need the extra height. We're just gonna keep it here. So I'm gonna run that bolt with a washer through there, I'm kinda pushing on the spare tire carrier with my chest, and then lift up on this bar. And that should help you get the bolts aligned and started. Just like that. We're gonna do that on all the remainings poles. With the last two installed here on the inside, they we're kind of hard to see, we got those loosely installed. I'm gonna go back and tighten down all the bolts we've added and that even goes to over here. So we can finally tighten everything down and get it nice and tight. With everything tightened down, I can put the top light assembly in place. And you can see there's a bunch of holes here that you can line up to get that height adjustment you want. Now we tested ours. We can just stick with the lowest one and it all lines up just fine. So we're gonna take a bolt. We're gonna put a washer on both sides. So just put that on like that, run this through, add a washer and a nut on the other side. And repeat that for the other three. You're gonna go back through with the ratchet and a screwdriver and tighten it down. Now, we just take our wire, run it back through, right through the hole in the center. Now we're gonna plug our brake light back in. Just push it on until you hear the little, snap into place. And we're gonna set it right up here. You can see there's a cutout to match this portion. We can set it into place there. Now we'll put our bolts in here at the top. I just removed the brake lights so you can see what I'm doing. We've got long spacers for the top two holes. We'll go like this. Here at the bottom, same bolts. And these are gonna be the smaller spacers. So we'll go in between. After a little bit of trial and error, it is a little difficult to kinda hold this brake light in place, keeping the spacers in place and keeping these bolts in place. So I had camera man Aiden help me out, and he held one side while I held the back here just to get a couple of 'em started to make a little bit easier. And now this is where we are. And I'm just gonna come back and tighten it down. We're gonna place our spare tire bumpers. And all you gotta do is kinda push it back in there and then just keep twisting it. It'll eventually work its way through and get onto that groove. And now it's in place. After that, you just reinstall your spare tire and it's good to go. It wasn't that bad of an install. And I think it really makes the Jeep look pretty cool. I think it has that utility look to it. Plus it has that functionality of adding extra accessories on the side, just helps you out in the long run. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and I hope this helped..
