Troubleshooting Brake Controller On 2000 Ford Expedition
Products Featured in This Question
Question:
My 52740 controller on a 2000 Ford Expedition is drawing down my battery by remaining on while the vehicle is parked. No trailer connected. It draws 2.5 to 3.9 amps while the ignition is off. The digital readout displays one dot. I put in a battery disconnect until I could resolve the problem . In doing so I noticed that the controller would remain off after switching the battery back on until the brake pedal activated the control again. If the power to the control is not interrupted it continues to draw power. What could be preventing the controller from shutting down when not in use?

Per the instructions for the Journey 52740 will switch to power conservation mode if there has been no activity for 3-1/2 hours. It will become active instantly when the brake pedal is depressed.
The single dot indicates there is no trailer connected.
You will want to check the trailer connector on the back of your 2000 Ford Expedition for corrosion, which can possibly cause the power draw. If that checks out okay then you can sever the blue wire coming from the brake controller and test the wire. It should only draw power when the manual lever is used. If it shows current the controller is the problem and may need to be replaced.
If you need a new brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha P2, part # 90885. This brake controller is one of our most popular because it is easy to install and operate. The plug-in adapter I recommend is part # 3035-P. This simply plugs into the back of the brake controller and the other end plugs into the port located under the dash on your Expedition.
I have attached a helpful article that explains installation of a brake controller you can check out.
