What Tool is Needed to Remove the Castle Nut on a Trailer Axle
Published 02/01/2023 >
Question:
I have been working with trailers for about 7 years already but when it comes to removing the the hub, I use a 19mm wrench and most of the time the nut that holds the to the hub is usually difficult to remove. My question to you is, do you all sell a special tool or a small impact socket or something that when doing this job, it will become much easier?

Expert Reply:
The spindle nut on a trailer axle should not be difficult to remove, it only requires a very small amount of torque. It should for the most part just turn off by hand after the retainer is removed whether it's a clip or pin. We don't have a specialty tool for this unfortunately, I usually just use a large set of channel lock pliers and I do this mainly to avoid getting grease all over my hands. That's the way I have always done them since most people don't have the larger sockets these nuts require.
Please note, when tightening the spindle nut you'll only want to do so until there is no side to side play in the hub. There is actually no torque value for this.
