How To Find Correct Replacement Hubs for Ram-Lin Boat Trailer

Question:

Hi, Conner. Thank you for responding so quickly and thoroughly! I could not find a label on the beam. The old hub assembly that I need to replace is a Dexter, stamped with what appears to be “8-248”. Is that the Dexter part number for the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb. Axles-on 5 on 4-1/2? If so, options I would like to consider are: Replace with same hub assembly Move to a stainless hub (would like the complete assembly, “ready to go”—with bearings, grease, etc. ready to install. Let me know if I’m on the right track.

I have a few options for you to help with identifying the hub on your trailer. The first and easiest method would be to crawl under the trailer and look for the axle tag on the beam. This should give an axle capacity which we can then use to find the bearings based off industry standards. For example, a 2,000 lb axle uses L44649 bearings like what comes with the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K. The other option would be to take the hubs off the trailer and either read the part numbers off the old bearings or measure them with a dial caliper to the nearest thousandth of an inch. I have attached an article that goes over this process in more detail.

I have also attached another link with a list of our hub selection. Unfortunately, we are not able to look up parts for a trailer using their make and model.

The Dexter 8-248 Hub cross-references to the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3,500-lb Axles part # AKIHUB-545-35-G-K or part # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K if you have easy lube spindles. These hubs have a galvanized finish so they will work great on a boat trailer. These are complete assemblies which are pre-greased and ready to install. If you want to opt for stainless steel which will offer more protection than the above galvanized finish, you'll need the Kodiak Trailer Hub for 3,500-lb Axles part # KH84545S. That said, this isn't really needed and you'd have to obtain the bearings separately as well as the grease.
