Trailer Axle For 1,500 lb 5 x 8 Homemade Trailer

Question:

Hi. I am building a tear trailer from the ground up. I am designing the frame and welding it together. I do not know a lot about axles and would love a basic rundown of how to choose the right size. I will build a trailer that is 5 x 8 and the total weight of the tear will not exceed 1500 lbs. I am looking for the most economical option which I assume will include leaf springs. It will not need to go off road, but I will take it on the highway. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks!

For a 5 x 8 trailer you just want a 60 inch hub face to hub face axle, as the width of the tires and wheels will extend past the frame. For your 1,500 lb homemade trailer go with the following:

- Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 60" Long - 2,000 lbs # e84YR

The right size is just enough for edge of the tires to clear the frame, which this will do for you.
