Towing Setup for a 2012 RAM 1500

Updated 01/04/2022 | Published 01/03/2022

Question:

I have a 2012 ram 1500 I checked its specs it has a 8750 max trailer tow weight. What hitch, brake controller etc. is required to haul my 10000 gvwr trailer trailer weight 2200# load weight 3800# max load. I use this trailer with other larger medium duty trucks, but am hoping to move new 3800 pound mini excavator behind pickup with existing trailer.

I would be happy to help you set up your 2012 Ram 1500 to haul your excavator. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver item # 14374 this will replace your factory hitch. This hitch has more than enough capacity to handle both your trailer and excavator's combined 6,000 lbs weight. You will always want to defer to your lowest rated component's weight capacity.

If you need to replace your 7-way connector the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 7-Way and 4-Pole Flat Connectors item # C55774 will plug directly into your factory harness and will also supply a 4-flat connector.

For your brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller item # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that works with trailers having up to 4 axles. The brake controller activates your trailer brakes in proportion to your Ram's braking action. It automatically adjusts the trailer's braking based on deceleration of your vehicle.

You will also want the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge item # 3021-P. This adapter will allow you to plug the Prodigy P3 directly into your Ram's wiring harness without having to cut or splice wires. I have linked an installation video.

If you are in need of a ball mount you will want the etrailer Ball Mount Kit - 3" Rise or 4" Drop - 16,000 lbs item # EBMK2416.
