How To Upgrade Speed Rating Of 40x48 Ironton Utility Trailer
Question:
I am looking to upgrade an Ironton 40x48 utility trailer so that it can handle highway speeds. I do not need to upgrade suspension as the load capacity for the trailer is appropriate. What is the minimum I need to get to highway speeds? I know I need an upgraded wheel/tire. Do I need to replace the hubs? Is the existing axle OK?

Typically the only thing that limits a trailers speed rating is the tires, so replacing the tires with ones that have a higher speed rating is likely all you need.
Based on the information I could find on your 40x48 Ironton Utility Trailer it uses 4.80-12 tires with wheels that have the 4 on 4" bolt pattern. I recommend reusing your existing wheels and having the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # TT48012C mounted by a local tire shop with new valve stems # AM20906.
These tires have a load rating of 990lbs at 90 PSI so they will be plenty strong for your trailer with a 1600lb load capacity, and the 81 MPH speed rating will be perfect for the highway.
Now if the speed rating is stamped into the frame of the trailer you will need to reach out to Ironton directly and see exactly which components are limiting the speed. If you can provide the components with a speed rating I would be happy to help you find the correct replacements.
I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
