Replacement Bearing Protectors for Older Boat Trailer With 1-63/64 Hub Bore
Products Featured in This Question
Question:
Hi, I have a mid 80s Sea Bird galvanized boat trailer for a16foot boat that currently has plastic bearing buddy style grease caps with zerts. They need to be replaced but Im not sure what I need. I measured the inside of hub with a cheaper caliper and got 1 63/64, but Im not sure how accurate that is. Ill use what ever I can find that fits. Dust cap, bearing buddy etc. Do you have any suggestions on what would fit? Thank you, Tom

Expert Reply:
The size bearing protector (Bearing Buddy) or dust cap needed is based on the hub bore diameter. 1-63/64 translates to roughly 1.98 inches which is what the # BB1980A-SS stainless or # BB1980A are designed to fit. The easiest way to confirm this is to pull the hub and check the reference number on the side of the outer bearing cage. If it's L44649, L44643 or L44640 and your existing bearing protector is driven in and not threaded in, either of these would work perfectly for you. Since you're dealing with a boat trailer, the stainless model, part # BB1980A-SS would be a better choice.
If the existing bearing protector is threaded in, you'll want to use # BB1980T-SS.
If you have a different outer bearing number, let me know the reference number and whether the existing hub bore is threaded or if the bearing protector is meant to be driven in and I'd be happy to look further.
I've linked to a product demonstration video that you might find helpful.
