You would choose a side wind or top wind jack based on several factors. Each has its advantages. If clearance is an issue for the radius of a top wind, then you would choose a side wind. The opposite is also true. It is my experience that a side winding jack is easier to turn. However, if the tongue is low to the ground a top wind would be a better option because you would not have to bend down as much and it would not be as awkward to turn.
A side winding jack normally has inner components that are easier to access and replace. If I was choosing a jack I would probably go wit ha side wind only because it is my personal preference. I have included a link to our jack FAQ article for you.
