There are many different ways that you can connect the 4-pole connector on your trailer to the 5-pole connector on your vehicle. If the 4-pole and 5-pole connectors on your vehicle and trailer are the flat style connectors, then you could simply plug the 4-pole trailer connector into the 5-pole vehicle connector. Doing this would leave one slot exposed on the vehicle 5-way connector, but that slot is usually attached to the reverse light circuit which you do not need. In some cases the connector on the trailer may have extra plastic molding that may not make them directly compatible, but you could replace the connector or use a utility knife to trim down the extra plastic.
Another option would be to add a 5-way connector to your trailer like part # HM47910. This would give you the additional connection if you wanted to add brakes to your trailer in the future. If you did not want to add trailer brakes, then you could simply tie off the brake wire and tuck it away. This would give your trailer a 5-way connector like your vehicle.

Hi the trailer wire plug on my truck has a 4 female connector (receiver) and the boat trailer that I need pull has a 5 pin male connector. Will this plug set up still work?
