Adding Kayak Carrier and Roof Box to Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform

Question:

I have a Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform 60”L x 49” w and want to fit both a cargo box and J style kayak carrier on it. Will I be able to fit both a Thule Force XT Sport Rooftop Cargo # TH6356B and Rhino-Rack folding Kayak Carrier #S512 on it? I can’t find dimensions for the kayak carrier.

The Thule Force XT Sport Cargo Box # TH6356B measures 24-3/4 inches wide and the Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier # S512 will take up about 24 inches of crossbar space when it's in its upright position for a single kayak. This width might increase if you have a larger kayak that requires you to adjust the J-cradle down a bit.

Both of these mounted side by side will get you extremely close to if not over the 49 inch overall width on your Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform Rack like # JA9133. To do this you would also need to add the Accessory Bars # RR43137B to the Pioneer Platform so that the mounting hardware could have something to clamp around, while also being sure the clamps line up to openings on the Pioneer.

Due to space and mounting restrictions with regards to a cargo box, I think your best option is actually with a cargo bag instead like the Rhino-Rack # RRLB250 or the skinnier # RRLB200. That way you can better utilize the various tie-down points the Pioneer offers with the bag's straps you will also have more versatility as to where exactly you want to mount the bag on the platform. A bag is also lighter than a cargo box which will give you more available weight capacity for your cargo.

Instead of adding the above-mentioned accessory bars that reach all the way across the platform you can also just use the shorter # RR43232B that will just span half the width of the platform for the kayak carrier.
