Video Transcript for Thule Roof Box Review - 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan

Colin: Hey guys, Colin here at Etrailer. Today we have a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan. We're going to do a test fit of Thule Force XT Sport rooftop cargo box. This box is going to be a great roof mounted accessory for your vehicle. Provides you with an enclosed space on your roof to get any excess cargo, luggage, or even sports equipment up in the box. And that's going to create more space on the inside of your vehicle. The box does have a very nice aerodynamic shape. It's going to help cut down on wind noise and drag.

Something that you do want to keep in mind, though: there is going to be some wind noise and drag, but that aerodynamic shape does help cut down on it.The entire box has an ABS very durable molded plastic construction. It's going to be impact resistant and it's going to be UV resistant as well. So it's going to protect your materials from the elements. The top of it is pretty cool, in my opinion. It's got an AeroSkin diamond pattern to it, so you can kind of see where I scratch it, its got that rough feeling to it. Gives it a more rugged look.

And it is going to hide scratches a lot better when you compare it to those glossier boxes from Thule and from other companies. And also, in my opinion, it just looks a little bit better. Now what's really cool about this box is that it is the smallest version of the Force XT line. And so with that, we have it pulled as far over to the passenger side as we can get it. And that leaves a lot of space on the other side of our roof rack for other accessories. Whether we got a bike rack, maybe even a kayak carrier, we just have other space to be able to utilize it.Something I do want to recommend is that if you have a big family trip, you got a family of five, six people, this box is not going to have the storage capability to hold all that luggage and all that cargo for that big of a family.

It's going to be great, though, for smaller families, you got some duffle bags to throw up there. Or even if you have a smaller vehicle and you want to throw your skis and snowboards up there and keep them out of the elements, it's going to be perfect for that as well, while also not taking up too much real estate on your roof rack. Now let's hop up there and take a closer look at it. Basically all we got to do is insert our key right here, that comes with the system. We're just going to insert it. Want to make sure you get it just right.

Now we're going to turn it to the right, and it just opens right up.Now on the inside, we're going to have 11 cubic feet of storage space. Like I said, it's going to be good for some duffle bags, some other cargo and gear, or even up to three to five sets of skis or three to four snow boards. Now right here, it's going to be how we attach this to our roof rack. We're going to have four of these quick mount grips right here. Let's come to the outside so you can actually see how it works. It's going to drop through the bottom of our box and come over our crossbars like that. And once we tighten it down, you can see the claws will start coming together. just like that. And as it gets tighter and tighter, it's going to clamp on. You just keep turning it until you hear a couple of audible clicks. We'll show you those in a minute when installing it. But it gives a really nice hold on our aero bar. We got our wing bar setup right here. But this is also going to work for most factory roof racks, as well as elliptical bars, round bars, and square bars.Let's get this off, and we'll go ahead and install it for you guys. Basically what we're going to do is drop it down into the track right here. This track can slide back and forth. That's going to accommodate a wide variety of cross bar spreads. Just drop it down through there.Like I showed you on the outside, it goes around that cross bar. And then we just tighten it down. And now the knob is going to let you know when it's tight enough by giving you that click right there. So once all four are tightened down like that, it's going to be very solid on our roof.We are going to have straps that come with this box, going to be able to secure your cargo if you don't have it filled to capacity, as well as six tie down points. Two at the front, two at the middle, two at the back to be able to use to secure cargo. When you're all done loading it up, it has a nice strap right here so you don't have to climb up to pull it down unless you have a height restriction. I'm about 5'9', which is pretty average. You can just pull it down from here. Now I've pulled that lid down to me, just put that strap back in and then close it all the way. What's really nice about this one key system is that you cannot lock it up and remove the key until each lock is properly engaged. Sort of pull down on it. There we go. Now we know it's properly secured. And just like a lot of Thule's boxes, this one does have a dual sided opening lid. We'll come around to the other side and show you guys that. Now in this situation where it's on the passenger side, it's probably not going to be that helpful, because you can reach everything from over there. But if you prefer to have this loaded on your driver side of the vehicle, you have that option to bring it all the way over here and still be able to open it. Just show you that real quick. It's going to be the same system. Insert the key, turn the lock, opens up the same exact way.Now something else you want to think about when installing this on your Tiguan is you want to keep if far enough forward that you're going to have access to your hatch. And like I said, with that track that you can adjust back and forth, you can push the box up if you need to to gain your hatch access. We've already set that up, so we can come back here, open up our trunk, and you see it doesn't even come close to making contact. If you find you are having troubles, like I said, just give it a little nudge forward, and you're going to be able to fit it.Well that's just going to about do it for our test fit of the Thule Force XT Sport rooftop cargo box on our 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan.

  • Adding Kayak Carrier and Roof Box to Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform
The Thule Force XT Sport Cargo Box # TH6356B measures 24-3/4 inches wide and the Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier # S512 will take up about 24 inches of crossbar space when it's in its upright position for a single kayak. This width might increase if you have a larger kayak that requires you to adjust the J-cradle down a bit. Both of these mounted side by side will get you extremely close to if not over the 49 inch overall width on your Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform Rack like # JA9133....

  • Kit Needed to Swap Lock Cores Out of Thule Force Cargo Box
You can use a Thule Re-Keying kit part # TH450200 which comes with two new cores, two keys, and a change key. But to remove the old lock core will require you to unlock it first. Once unlocked you can insert the change key and the old core will slide right out. If you don't have a key to unlock what you have you'll need a key for it. To pick out the key you'd then want the part # THKEYNXXX where the X's equal your key number.

  • Will Thule Force XT Sport Roof Cargo Box Fit on Rola Roof Rack for 2016 Subaru Crosstrek
The Thule Force XT Sport, part # TH6356B, does fit the Rola 59898 roof rack; however, that roof rack has been discontinued and is no longer available. We do have the longer 53 inch crossbar Rola, part # RBU53, which the Thule also fits.

I do have an option for you but I contacted Thule and the Thule Hullavator part # TH898 actually requires 38 inches of bar space to install so it would not fit on the 60" cross bar with the Thule Force XT Sport Rooftop Cargo Box part # TH6356B that is 25" wide. I recommend to use the Thule Force XT Sport Rooftop Cargo Box with a J-style Kayak carrier Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier and TelosXL Load Assist part # MPG114MD-351XL. • Measuring to Determine Which Thule Cargo Boxes Fit a Lexus RX 350
Front overhang for cargo boxes is not an issue of concern. Longer boxes will overhang the front some but most boxes have adjustable feet to allow you to have the box more forward or rearward on the vehicle roof. The area of concern is the back of the vehicle. Things like antennas and rear hatch doors can interfere with the cargo box. In order to determine which Thule boxes will fit without interference you will need to take one measurement. First, if the crossbars on your Lexus RX...

  • Will Thule Force Medium Rooftop Cargo Box TH624 Fit on 2017 Honda Odyssey
For the Thule Force Medium Rooftop Cargo Box # TH6356B to fit on a vehicle without interfering with the rear hatch opening fully the vehicle should have a distance of at least 41-7/8-inches from the center of the front crossbar to the rear of the roof where it meets the hatch. If the distance from the center of the front bar to this roof/hatch seam is this 41-7/8-inches or more then the box will fit without contacting the hatch. If you do not have roof rack you will need to install one...

  • Rooftop Cargo Box Recommendations for 2017 Subaru Outback
All rooftop cargo boxes will generate wind noise and to some degree all will negatively affect mileage but those with the more aerodynamic low-profile shape, such as Thule's Hyper XL # TH612, will tend to be quieter and will have slightly less effect on fuel economy. At 90-inches external length this is the longest box Thule recommends for your Outback. It can handle skis up to 201-cm in length so it may be more than you need. It also weighs 53-lbs empty so keep in mind that what you can...

  • 16 Cubic Foot Roof Cargo Box Recommendation by Thule
The Thule Force Cargo Box part # TH6356B is the 13 cubic foot Force cargo box. The 16 cubic foot version of this cargo box is the # TH6357B. I confirmed this by checking with Thule. Or another option you have for a 16 cubic foot cargo box would be the Pulse L part # TH615.

  • How Much Weight Can I Carry in a Box on the Roof of a 2018 Toyota RAV4
From my research your 2018 Toyota RAV4 can carry up to 101.9 pounds on the factory roof rack. That may be oddly specific but it's what Toyota states as the maximum. So you need to make sure the roof box you choose and everything in it doesn't exceed 101.9 pounds. A good roof box that you might like is the Thule Force XT Sport, part # TH6356B. It holds up to 11 cubic feet of gear and includes locks. It fits on your RAV4's crossbars with clamps that are super easy to tighten. You...

The Thule Evolution cargo box has been discontinued since 2007 so I do not have any fit information on it. But I can tell you how to figure it out. First, there were two types of Evolution cargo box. One had just drilled holes for the mounting feet and the other had slots with more adjustability.
