Recommended Clearance Dimensions Between Truck Bed Rails and 5th Wheel Trailer
Question:
I would like to lower my rv but was informed the distance between the floor of the pu bed and top of bed rail requires being reduced by modifying cutting out a horizontal distance where the 5th wheel overhang rotates over beds rails. i am looking at having a body shop modify reduce bed heigth aft of RV hook up in bed aft. Have you information on this please. Thanks.

If you take a look at the linked diagram you can see the minimum recommended clearance distances between truck and trailer for 5th wheel towing. It is recommended to have at least 5-inches from the top of the bed rails to the bottom of the trailer overhang. If you are intending to modify your truck by having its bed rails partially cut out you'll have to determine how much needs to be cut out based on the height of your trailer when level. If you're going to lower the trailer for reduced sway then you'll need to determine the amount of height drop and take that into account for the modifications to be bed rails. Without knowing specifics I cannot give you an amount to be cut from the truck but if you follow the guidelines on the diagram you should be able to maintain correct clearances between the truck and trailer.
