Installing a Brake Controller in 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Published 07/15/2015

Question:

Thank you for the information. This is a great web site! I am looking at the etbc7 install kit. I already have the 4-7 pin connector and bracket. Can I buy everything else separately? I just want to make sure I get everything I need to install it.

Based on my research, the 2001 Toyota Tacoma did not come with a factory trailer connector. However, since you already have a 4-way connector installed on your truck, you will be able to start here for your brake controller installation.

I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885. This is a proportional brake controller with a digital display. It will level automatically when mounted within a 360-degree vertical range. The brake controller installs in your Tacoma with a universal pigtail harness included with the controller. I have attached a review video of this brake controller for you.

You will also need our universal installation kit # ETBC7. This kit will provide you with the 7- and 4-way trailer connector needed for functioning electric brakes, as well as the hardware necessary for installation. The connector from this kit will plug into your existing 4-way, as well as allow you to connect the trailer brakes with the brake controller and battery. I have attached an installation video of this kit on a 1999 Toyota Tacoma for you.

I have also attached some FAQ articles for you.

You can buy all the components of the kit separately. The # ETBC7 installation kit is something we put together for our customers. The easiest way to get the duplex wire, breakers, butt connectors, and ring terminals is to use part # 5506. In addition to that, you will also want 6 hex self-tapping screws # 101131802, a larger self-tapping screw # FA1131822, and 2 quick splice connectors # SWC502905-1. If you do not have a circuit tester, I recommend # PTW2993. The # ETBC7 kit also comes with 2 feet of 1/2 inch wire loom # 459075-1, as well as a bundle of zip ties.
