Troubleshooting Trailer Bearings that Fit Almost Too Tight to Install
Question:
I have Dexter easy lube 7000 lb axles on my Heartland Landmark 5th wheel. The bearings I purchased from you are 14125 outer and 25580 inner. To make them fit I would need to use Emory paper on the axel to provide clearance to make them fit. I am reluctant to do that. I appears the tolerances are to tight between you bearing and the Dexter axle. As they are now it would be press fit. What do you suggest I do?

Expert Reply:
A 7k Dexter axle should have a number 42 spindle on it which would call for the inner bearing of 25580 and outer bearing 14125A. You should not have to press the bearings or modify the spindle in any way as long as the spindle is in decent shape. They should be a tight enough fit that there should be no movement between the bearing and the spindle, but not tight enough that you can't slide the bearing on. Sometimes it takes a bit of wiggling to get the bearing to slide all the way on. I know I have messed with a few that seemed too tight to fit but with enough effort they went on all the way.
I would inspect your spindle to verify that is not damaged in any way. I attached a bearing removal and inspection video for you to check out as well.
