Removing Wiring Harness Cap to Install Trailer Wiring on a 2014 Honda Pilot

Updated 04/28/2021 | Published 02/08/2015

Question:

The cap on the wiring harness now appears different on the 2014 Pilot. There are not 2 tabs there is only one. Do I push it in or pull it out? Is it attached to the cap? Or integral to the receptacle? I tried several approaches over 1.5 hours and was totally unsuccessful at removing the cap. So what is the trick? All these silly connectors have a magic trick to release them and I cannot find the answer to that anywhere. The rest of the installation, so far, has been easy and well documented. Not so with this bleeping cap.

The cap on the factory plug on your 2014 Honda Pilot should separate from the plug by lifting up on a tab. You may need a small flathead screwdriver to do so. We do not have a video showing this but looking at the end that plugs into the vehicle it would appear that it is the type that has to be pried up while pulling the cap at the same time.

It might help if you can take some pictures and send them to me so I can better ascertain the situation.

2014 Honda Pilot. The cover of the factory wiring package is very difficult to remove. Is there a special tool so I do not ruin the adapter? All this installation calls for is screwdrivers.

We had a customer send in a helpful tip for removing that cover. There are two tabs holding the cover in place that need to be released, but one of them is difficult to actually gain access to. What this customer did is actually remove the entire harness from the Pilot, which allowed him to easily get to both tabs to get the cap/cover off.

Ok, then so how do you remove the entire harness???? This is much more difficult than it should be.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by removing the harness. Once you take the cap off you should be able to simply hook up the plug-end from the Tekonsha kit. Can you tell me a bit more of what you're trying to do?

I ended up getting it, but thank you for responding...it was quite difficult! But after an hour or so, I ended up accidently breaking the blue tab that holds it on. I had to zip-tie it back to the frame, but it's working now. Thanks.
