Video Transcript for Carr LD Custom Fit Side Steps Review

Hi there hard workers. Today we're gonna be taking a look at Carr's line of custom fit, LD steps. These are available in either a black, titanium or polished aluminum finish. Carr has these steps available in a wide variety of trucks, SUVs, and vans so you wanna make sure that you use our fit guide to ensure that you're getting the proper mounting hardware for your particular vehicle. These 14 inch steps are gonna make it easier for you to get in and out of your vehicle so you don't have to step nearly as high to get into your truck. This is much easier to step in and out and your knees are gonna appreciate it over a long period of time.

You get in and out of your truck every day, multiple times a day so save your body and save your strength by making it as easy as possible. In addition to making it easier to get in and out of your vehicle, it also makes it easier to access roof-mounted accessories. Whether it's your van, truck, or SUV, there's a lot of roof rack systems available here at etrailer and it's a great way to get some gear on top your roof but sometimes getting that gear on top of there and off, especially on trucks and vehicles that are lifted up higher can be really troublesome. Adding a step like this really makes it a lot easier so you can see what you're doing, get the gear you need up and down without any problems. If we take a closer look at our step these do come as a paired set so if you get one you'll have one for each side, and each step is gonna measure 14 inches wide and it has a diamond pattern textured finish on top that is very deep in its treads.

So, that's going to provide plenty of traction even in inclement weather cause snow and other things like that are going to be able to smush down in the grooves when you step on it and then the ridges, here, are gonna dig into the soles of your shoes ensuring you've got good footing. The steps are constructed of a cast aluminum, which ensures that it's lighter, making it easier for you to install it and also ensures that it is corrosion resistant, we don't have to worry about rust with aluminum. They do have finishes on them, though, to help add an additional layer of protection. We're showing off the black powder coat today but there is also a titanium and polished aluminum. And this cast aluminum is gonna give you plenty of footing to get on, as well as provide plenty of support.

There's 500 pounds of capacity here so just about any passenger that's gonna be gettin into your vehicle should be able to get on this step without any problem. And whenever I install steps, running boards or Nerf bars I like to give it a flex test. So, we're gonna bounce up and down on it and this step doesn't move at all and you can see our truck bouncing up and down. There's no movement from our step. There might be a little bit of flex from the truck's body but not our solid aluminum step.

These steps do come in a quantity of two so you'll have one for both your driver and passenger side, but you may wanna consider picking up another set if you've got an extended cab truck, here, like a 4-door like we have here, or an SUV, or even a van if it's got sliding doors or rear doors as well. You can pick up another set here and they install the same, as far as the front and the rear. You're gonna get all the hardware and everything that you need in the bag, as well as instructions on how to lay it out. You do also get a little bit of freedom with these, unlike Nerf bars and running boards where they have a fixed position they have to go. These ones you do get to choose a little bit forward or backward where you want to put them and that's nice if you move your seat, if you're, maybe, a shorter person that keeps the seat further forward a lot you might wanna put your step a little further forward, versus if you're a taller gentlemen, or lady, you wanna keep it towards the rear. You could put your step a little towards the rear so that way it's custom fit for you and how you drive your vehicle. And these steps stick out a little bit further than your typical running board and Nerf bars. On average about two inches further out which makes it easier for you to step on the step getting in and out of the vehicle. You do just want to keep that in mind, though, cause if we look here, down the line, we can see that it does stick out past our tire just a little bit so your vehicle is gonna be a little bit wider than it was before. So, if you we're comparing these to a set of Nerf bars or running boards one of the things you're gonna notice right away is that these are significantly lower down than what a running board or Nerf bar is. You can see here on this truck the running boards, basically the top of it sits about right at the bottom of the pinch weld, versus these ones over here, they hang down almost five inches from the bottom of the pinch weld. So, if you are having issues with stepping into your truck if it sits up real high, if you've got a lifted truck or anything like that and you're havin a hard time lifting your leg up that high, this is gonna minimize how high you need to lift your leg to make that first step so you can make the second one even easier getting into your truck. One like this, here, is gonna be up higher. You can see the angle of my knee is a lot higher. It's definitely better than just stepping directly into the truck, but it's gonna be more difficult especially if you've got a lifted truck. Sometimes running boards, even on those big, heavy lifted trucks, they're still way up in the air so somethin like this is really gonna be good for the guys that have lifted trucks. Now, if you do off-roading in your vehicle you do want to keep in mind that these hang lower than your typical Nerf bars or running boards. So, we're gonna go ahead and go over this slight incline here and take this vehicle off-road and you can see that when we pop up over the curb we do have the clearance we need so we don't really need to worry, but it is close so it's just somethin to keep in mind depending on how aggressive your terrain is. And it really is nice the way that it sticks out a little bit further. As I was just getting in and out one of the things I noticed is when I went to pivot most of the time running boards, my ankles hittin on the side of the truck when I go to pivot around, but on this one since it sticks out further I don't make any contact with the truck and I can get in and out really easily. The aggressive raised treads will improve traction in all weather. So, whether it's just, maybe, a little bit damp out due to some early morning dew or you've got a full on ice storm here, you're gonna have plenty of area for that muck to go down in in the grooves and the spikes where they poke up can get through and reach your shoes, giving you plenty of traction. And with them being aluminum they're also going to be lighter than a steel or iron variant. It just makes it a lot easier when you're going to assemble em. You can easily do this by yourself and hold this up, here, and get everything marked and lined up. These are a semi-custom design, as they are designed they're custom for Ram trucks, but it's semi-custom because they are designed to fit a wide variety of years. And that completes our look at Carr's line of custom fit, LD steps..

I just needed a clean, simple step for my wife @5’3” to get into our 2010 K1500.

Mounted step about halfway on front edge of seat. Entering truck, my foot placement is towards the back of the step. Exiting the truck, my foot placement misses the step. I would move the step further back (front edge of step with front edge of seat) if I was to install another set. Mounting hardware does not sit perfectly against frame due to rivets, bolts, and other structural members of the truck. Final location is somewhat dictated by these obstacles. Used supplied and extra shims to fill in gaps between frame and mounting brackets. Final install was solid and product is well made.

The quality of these steps are great however to say they “fit” the Mercedes Sprinter is quite deceiving. When installed as per the instructions, you have only 5” of ground clearance remaining. My fear is that the first irregular driveway will rip them off as they are so low to the ground.

by:

Very Solid step! I had to make custom brackets in order to allow my wife easier access into my 4x4 truck

by:

Perfect fit, very sturdy, exactly what I needed for 21 Sprinter

by:

they are very sturdy.

by:

Fits exactly as described. Very sturdy step! Easy to install with plenty of hardware. Good quality product. Would suggest it to anyone.

by:

I like! Longer and flatter than hoops, easier to use and good traction with muddy or wet boots. Would buy again.

I ordered the side steps at approximately 8:00 PM on Tuesday, December 22 and they were delivered to my house at approximately 11:00 AM on Thursday morning, December 24. The box was carefully packed with steps, bolts, brackets and an instruction sheet. I am converting the steps to mount on a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon so I do have some additional design work to do. Extremely satisfied with the company, their pricing, and with their efficiency.

Just what I ordered , Thank You
