Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Suspension 115052 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at a replacement shackle strap. A shackle strap connects a double aisle leaf spring to a hangar of a single-axle trailer or to an equalizer of a multi-axle trailer. It's going to allow the necessary pivot of the springs to occur for an evenly distributed load between the axles, and also a smooth ride for the trailer. This part number is good for one shackle strap. If we take a measurement, the distance that we have from the center of one hole to the center of the other, that's going to give us the measurement of 2-5/8". Overall length, edge to edge, is around 4".

Overall width from edge to edge is going to give us a measurement of about 1-1/4". The hole diameters, that's going to be 9/16". You can see it's made from a nice durable steel construction. That's going to do it for today's look at the replacement shackle strap.

Ask the Experts about this etrailer Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

  • Can 2-1/2" Shackle Straps be Used for 2006 Innsbruck-Lite 26RB Suspension
When it comes to shackle straps on a trailer suspension it really boils down to what looks correct. Since leaf springs and equalizers can be switched out (especially on older trailers), longer or shorter shackle straps can be used to help make sure everything is lined up correctly (see attached photo). As long as your suspension looks like that photo then it is perfectly fine to use 2-1/2" shackle straps like the part # 115052 which is 2-5/8" long. If your suspension doesn't look like...

  • Solution for Raising Trailer Frame to Gain Axle Clearance
I definitely have some solutions for raising the frame of your trailer but swapping out the existing shackle straps for new ones won't give you the type of clearance you're needing. As far as changing suspension components your best option is to remove your current hangers and weld on longer ones. This is the most efficient way to lift the frame up and away from your axle. I have attached a link that will take you to our complete selection of hangers that you can look through. If...

  • Replacement Shackle Strap Recommendation that is 3-1/2 inches Long
Your question came in blank, but based on the picture you submitted it looks like you are in need a replacement shackle strap that is 3-1/2 inches in length. For that you would want the Shackle Strap # TRSL225. This strap is 3-1/2 inches long like what you have pictured with the hole measurements 2-1/4 inches on center. For a new shackle bolt you would want the Shackle Bolt part # 166081.

  • Replacement Trailer Leaf Spring for 3,500 lb 25-1/2 inch Springs
When measuring to replace trailer leaf springs you want to measure them while they are unloaded. Since leaf springs tend to stretch as they flatten out over time going with a new spring slightly shorter in length is recommended. Since yours are 25-1/2 inches in length currently a 25-1/4 inch spring like you referenced would be ideal. The # SP-212275 would be perfect since it fits the length you would need and the weight capacity as it has a 3,500 lb capacity. Going with a taller shackle...

  • Can Longer Shackle Straps be Added to Tandem Axle Trailer
When replacing shackle straps they should be the same length as the ones that were previously on your tandem axle trailer; replacing them with longer straps will result in additional play in your trailer suspension which could lead to additional wear or other issues and longer ones are not going to provide you with added benefit. For a tandem axle trailer it is common to have 2-5/8" shackle straps such as part # 115052. I recommend using these if they were the same length as your previous...

  • Effect of Installing Shorter Shackle Straps on Trailer with Axle Over-Under Kit
To slightly lower your trailer that has had an "axle flip" kit installed you would want to use slightly shorter shackle straps, not longer ones. Shorter shackles will let the axle rest closer to the trailer frame, which lowers the trailer height. If you refer to the linked article on trailer suspensions you can see the included diagrams that show both tandem and single-axle configurations. This will help you visualize the effect of installing shorter shackle straps. I also linked our main...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Shackle Straps that Flip Upside Down When Travelling
Is the trailer sitting nose high or low? If the trailer isn't sitting perfectly level that is a typical cause for the shackle straps to flip upside down. • Changing Shackle Strap Length to Maximize Weight Capacity on Sagging Trailer
The first thing I would check on your trailer is the capacity of the springs. You need to be sure the spring capacity is rated at 1/2 the axle capacity. That way 2 springs equal the capacity of the trailer axle for proper fit. Check the arch of the springs with a level top of spring to top of spring to tie bolt. Next, check your tire size. At some time the tire size and wheel size may have been changed from the stock size. If the stock size is known you can return to that size and it...

  • Advice For Installing Leaf Springs on a Double Axle Trailer
The easiest way to accomplish this would be to start on one side of the trailer and get the springs in place before bolting the axle to the springs with the u-bolts. Have the axle up on jacks or blocks so its weight is not bearing on the springs. Once the springs are in place on both sides, the shackles will be in the correct orientation so you can attach the axles. The key is to do one side of the trailer at a time. I have included an FAQ article on double eye and slipper springs below.

  • Correct Length of Trailer Suspension Shackle Link
In order to retain the same suspension geometry, when you replace shackles you should use the same length replacements. Going with a shackle that is too short will not allow enough articulation in the suspension, and cause a very rough ride. Using a shackle that is too long will allow too much articulation and can cause the suspension to bottom out.

  • Why are Shackle Straps Flipping on Boat Trailer
There are a few reasons why your shackle straps might be flipping on your boat trailer. One is that you are using straps that are too short; 2-5/8" straps such as # 115052 are typically used on triple-axle trailers. Another possibility is that your trailer is being overloaded causing this to happen; while there could also be worn-out or damaged suspension parts. Any of these reasons could be why your shackles are flipping so you will need to double check to ensure you aren't overloading...

  • Why Would Shackle Angle Change on Trailer Suspension After Leaf Spring Change
Shackles should angle away from the hanger so that as the leaf spring stretches when compressed it can add the added length as needed. If you installed new springs it's not uncommon to see that distance seem smaller since leaf springs have a tendency to stretch over time.

  • Replacement Leaf Springs and Suspension Parts for 1962 Forester Camper Trailer
Trailer makers do not maintain specs on items like suspension components but it is not difficult to identify correct replacement suspension parts like leaf springs and shackle straps. Also note that a well-worn leaf spring can actually stretch a bit. Leaf springs can easily elongate as much as 1/2-inch, sometimes more, if they are very old...
