Video Transcript for TruRyde Trailer Suspension TRFA73Z916DLNZ Review

Today we're going to review part number TRFA73Z916DLNZ. This is the TruRyde zinc shackle bolt with the lock nut for double-eye springs. This shackle bolt is a 9/16" diameter, and it is used to mount your double-eye leaf springs in your front hanger or your rear-suspension hanger. The lock nut is included. The shackle bolt and nut is a corrosion-resistant zinc finish. It is a 9/16" diameter, I mentioned, and the length of it, this is for 3" long.

So basically the way you would measure that is if you measure from under the head of the bolt to the very end of the bolt. And you can see there that it's 3". One other little item we need to mention to you is, this is a lock nut. It may look like, just by looking at it, a standard nut that attaches to the bolt, but this is what is called a distorted lock nut. By the distorted they mean that if you look at this side of the lug nut, it is actually oval shaped.

If you look at the bottom, it's actually normal round shape. What they do is they crimp the very top of this, and you can tell that by if you look at the sides you'll see crimp marks right here, and then 180 degrees crimp marks on the other side. So they basically crimp this and squeeze it a little bit to distort the top of the bolt, and that will give it it's locking feature. So when this lock nut is installed onto your shackle bolt, what you want to make sure is that these crimp marks right here that are at the top are facing to the outside. So in other words, make sure the crimp marks are facing to the outside.

And you'll start it, and it will start about one thread. It won't start a whole lot. It will seem like the threads are cross threaded or something. but just go ahead and start that way. Actually, what you'll need to do is once you install your lead spring in your suspension, and then you're going to put the nut on there, just start it like that.

Make sure your suspension is all lined up, everything's ready to go before you tighten this down. Now once it's all ready to go, go ahead and tighten this down, and as you tighten this down, it will lock onto this bolt when it gets to this distorted part. So that is very critical. If you try to do it with the crimp marks facing inwards, it just won't start because it's distorted and the threads will not start. So a little tip there is to just make sure those crimp marks, that you can see right here, are facing out. It'll start maybe one thread, not a whole lot, and then you'll be ready to install the shackle bolt. Hope that helps you, and that should do it for review on part number TRFA73Z917DLNZ.

Wth rusted out leaf springs on my trailer but with zero experience replacing them, I contacted etrailer and Shawn was very helpful in selecting the right parts and taking me through the process. She was patient in terms of helping me take the right measurements and suggesting the bolts and pieces I needed to do the job right. Everything came well packaged and complete two days later. An hour after that the springs were in my trailer and now has a boat sitting on it. Thanks! 423135

Just received the shackle straps and bolt. They look excellent and superior as the originals were only 1/2 " dia. and strap holes elongated by 1/4 ". One was worn thru. Also, straps are at least 1/32 thicker than originals. You phone person that took the order did an excellent job and very patient. First trailer suspension I have overhauled so some difficulty in describing what I even needed. Should be back on the road in a day or so. tks bob 738002

I am completely satisfied with service and the product that I purchased from etrailer.com. The measurements and specifications on the web site were complete and accurate. Shipping was prompt and the parts were packed more carefully than anything that I have purchased online. Installation of my replacement leaf springs went seamlessly which I really appreciated as I had to leave my broken trailer at my hunt camp and had limited tools to do the repair. I can't recommend etrailer.com highly enough. They are now my first choice in trailer parts. 905739

  • Recommended Shackle Bolt for 2,000 lb Utility Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension System
The Zinc Shackle Bolt with Locknut for Double-Eye Springs - 3" Long # TRFA73Z916DLNZ is a grade 5 bolt. Your setup as described is a standard setup for leaf spring hangers and double eye leaf springs. The # 166081 is made by the same manufacturer and is used more commonly than zinc plated for most factory applications. The cost difference comes down to supply and demand. The Dexter bolt # 007-003-01 is simply a different manufacturer that has a big name in the trailer axle market. ...

  • 9/16 inch Diameter Shackle/Spring Bolt Options for Boat Trailer
9/16 inch diameter shackle and leaf spring bolts are the standard size for trailer suspension so that would be what you'd need for your boat trailer. The part # TRFA73Z916DLNZ that you referenced is this size like you will need and also is galvanized like you wanted which will help prevent corrosion. Another really great solution is the part # 126B2 which has a zerk fitting on the bolt head which allows you to easily grease the bolt and bushing to prevent corrosion as well.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Suspension Bolts Splines that Aren't Seating
Have you tried tapping the bolt in with a hammer? Hopefully not much force would be needed. Ideally you get the splines seated all the way but then you don't have to really torque the nuts down as the bolt needs to allow the suspension to move. You might open up the holes a bit more to allow the splines to fit through if they are being stubborn.

  • Gaps Between Shackle Bolt Heads and Shackles on Double-Eye Trailer Suspension
For a 9/16 inch shackle bolt such as # TRFA73Z916DLNZ you will want 65 to 95 foot pounds of torque. Provided that you are within that range you won't over-torque the nuts. A little bit of play is expected but large gaps could be taken up using washers. The spring eye does need to be able to move though so it can't be sandwiched between the shackles too tightly.

  • Trailer Suspension U-Bolt and Shackle Bolt Torque Values
The axle U-bolt torque spec will depend on the bolt diameter- • 5/16 inch- 65 ft/lbs • 1/2 inch- 45-70 ft/lbs • 9/16 inch- 65-90 ft/lbs • 5/8 inch-100-120 ft/lbs • 3/4 inch-160 ft/lbs Shackle bolts don't typically have a specific torque value. They're usually tightened until the knurled portion of the bolt pulls completely into the shackle strap and the bolt head is ran all the way down to the shackle strap and you have at least 2 threads extending past the face of the nut. I've...

  • Is Lock Nut with Nylock Difficult to Thread Onto Bolt
Nuts that have Nylock built into which is what prevents them from backing off over time. It's what makes them a "lock nut". The downside is they can be a bit difficult to thread on since it has to be super tight. You still might verify that the nuts is the correct size for the bolt and you aren't cross-threaded. If you remove the nut does the threads on the bolt looks damaged where the nut was? If so, it's not the right size or it's cross threaded.

  • Will Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit Help With Up and Down Movement Of Trailer
It sounds like you have a lot of up and down movement in your travel trailer while going down the road. The Road Armor Shock Absorbing Kit part # LC696740 is a better option then the MORyde kit to help eliminate some of that movement because it provides about 3" more of suspension travel capability for a smoother ride. The 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles # SP-053275 that you referenced will work great on your trailer as it matches the capacity you need. The overall thickness of the spring pack is 2-1/4 inches which might be thicker than what you current have and could affect the height of the trailer. The reason I say "at least" 10 is because you would need additional bolts if you wanted to replace the bolts that attach your leaf springs to your hangers. A camper leaning doesn't usually mean anything is wrong. It usually means there's just more weight on that side than the other because of the appliances or whatever it may be on that side.
