Video Transcript for TruRyde Trailer Suspension TRSL225 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at a shackle strap that measures two and one-quarter inches long. This shackle strap simply connects a double-eye spring to a rear hanger on a single axle trailer or to an equalizer on a multi-axle trailer. It allows the appropriate movement to take place. It's made from a durable steel construction with protective coating to keep it safe from rust and corrosion. A few measurements to go over with you real quick, starting with the length measurement. Now, shackle strap lengths are taken from the center of one hole to the center of the other hole.

So that measurement for this one is two and one-quarter inches. The overall length, measuring edge to edge, is three and a half inches. The overall width from edge to edge is an inch and a quarter. Thickness is three-sixteenths of an inch thick. Then the bolt hole diameter is nine-sixteenths of an inch. That's going to do it for today's look at the two and one-quarter inch long shackle strap..

Just received the shackle straps and bolt. They look excellent and superior as the originals were only 1/2 " dia. and strap holes elongated by 1/4 ". One was worn thru. Also, straps are at least 1/32 thicker than originals. You phone person that took the order did an excellent job and very patient. First trailer suspension I have overhauled so some difficulty in describing what I even needed. Should be back on the road in a day or so. tks bob 738075

Bought 4 leaf springs, bolts, bushings, etc... Needed it next day, and the shipping cost more than the parts, which tells me the parts were a great price. All was well, on time, and to order. The only problem was I should have ordered two more shackle bolts... but that's on me. Thanks Guys and Gals. I am a happy 62 year old Marine Vet back on the road! 682482

Hi folks, parts arrived in a timely fashion, haven’t put them on yet but look like quality parts. Also the fenders I ordered from you were very nice. My friend welded them on for me and they look great all painted up. The fenders were of good quality steel, and I liked the fact they were made in the USA. Thanks etrailer. Gary T 682454

Comments
As mentioned in the product description, the 2-1/4 inch dimension is the length of the center hole to center hole distance. The overall length of the shackle strap is 3-1/2 inches.

Ask the Experts about this TruRyde Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

  • Thickest Trailer Suspension Shackle that is 2-1/4 inches Long
The thickness of the Shackle Strap # TRSL225 that you referenced 3/16 inches. The thickest shackle we offer in the length of 2-1/4 inches is the part # 018-024-01 which is 1/2 inch thick. I know that sounds almost too thick to be true, but I've measured these before to verify. We also have these shackles with bolts as well as part # 018-026-05. Then for a lock nut you'd need # TRFA916DLNZ.

  • Can 2-1/4 Inch Long Shackle Straps be Used in Place of 2 Inch Long Shackle Straps on a Trailer
The only way to know for sure if the 1/4 inch longer shackle straps, # TRSL225 (compared to the 2 inch long # TRSL200) will be a problem is to install them. The longer straps will likely mean they will be at a steeper angle once installed and that could affect the travel of the suspension. I do recommend not chancing it and go ahead and get the correct shackle straps # TRSL200.

  • How to Pick Out Correct Shackle Length for Trailer Suspension
Well shackle length is mainly based on the height difference between the front and rear hangers. The rear hanger normally doesn't hang as low as the front so that the shackle can offset the difference and add the ability to move. What is the height difference from the frame of the trailer to the hole on both hangers? With that we can see what would work best as a shackle. You want to go with the shackle length that allows the spring to sit as level as possible. The most popular size...

  • Are Trailer Leaf Spring Shackles Supposed to be Angled or Totally Straight
You want leaf spring shackles to be at a slight angle as that prevents the springs from flipping around to the other side of the equalizer over uneven terrain. I attached a picture that shows what the angle is typically like.

  • Will Trailer Shackle Straps Rust
The shackles like the # TRSL225 are bare steel. With enough contact with moisture they will begin to show signs of surface rust. Especially on a boat trailer that backed into saltwater.

  • Why Are Shackle Straps Hitting Frame When Re-Building Trailer Suspension
The problem seems to be mostly that your shackle straps are hitting the frame, and the reason for this is almost certainly because the 3-1/8" Shackle Strap # TRSL313 you are using are too long. The other possibility was the hangers being too short but that is unlikely considering the lengths you gave. What I recommend is trying out the 2-5/8" shackle straps from the the # APT8 kit you have, as those are the typical length for a tandem axle trailer, while 2-1/4" straps such as # TRSL225...

While we don't have a kit with the parts you need that have those measurements, we can easily piece it together. You will just need the following: - Straight Equalizer for 1-3/4" Double-Eye Springs - 5-1/2" Long - 9/16" Center Hole # TREQR2 (quantity of 2) - Shackle Strap - 2-1/4" Long # TRSL225 (quantity of 8) - Wet Equalizer Bolt with Locknut and Grease Zerk for Double-Eye Springs - 3" Long # 126B2 (quantity of 14) I have added links to video reviews for you to check out as well.

  • Why do Some Trailer Suspension Kits Have Longer Equalizer Hangers
The reality is that not every manufacturer makes their suspension kits to the same standard sizes. Some use taller hangers with wider equalizers and some might use a taller equalizer with a shorter center hanger. It really just comes down to the preference of the manufacturer and what gives them the ride height and distance between tires that works the best for them. Also the fact that some trailer leaf springs happen to be longer or shorter plays into what is best solution as well. Ideally...

If this is a boat trailer or utility trailer that might be sitting outside a lot you may want to consider upgrading to the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit # CE23002 since they're zinc plated and will help fight off corrosion a bit better. For shackles, the most popular size shackle is 2-1/4" like the part # TRSL225, but you'll want to measure...

Your question came in blank, but based on the picture you submitted it looks like you are in need a replacement shackle strap that is 3-1/2 inches in length. For that you would want the Shackle Strap # TRSL225. This strap is 3-1/2 inches long like what you have pictured with the hole measurements 2-1/4 inches on center. For a new shackle bolt you would want the Shackle Bolt part # 166081.

The amount of leafs do not matter as much as long as the spring is rated for your axle capacity. I recommend TruRyde Shackle Link part # TRSL225. The shackle straps are 2-1/4" long. The prices are a reflection of factors such as demand, availability, cost, and several other variables. The nylon bushings are also the least cost effective component of the kit. Unfortunately, we do not offer the Never Fail Tandem Axle Suspension Upgrade Hardware Kit for Double Eye Springs part # LC281285 with 1-3/4" long bushings. • How to Determine Hanger Spacing for Tandem Axle Trailer Suspension with 26 Inch Springs
Thank you for providing the specs for the suspension components that you already have. Correct hanger spacing really depends on the components being used such as springs, hangers and equalizers. Most of the hanger spacing dimensions that we have are based on our preassembled kits, so we will use that as a foundation for your setup. First, I would either replace all of the front and rear hangers with 2-1/2 inch tall hangers like part # 115918 or replace just the center hangers with 2-1/2...

In order to determine if the Never Fail Triple Axle Suspension Upgrade Hardware Kit part # LC281288 will work on your 2004 Thor Vortex 385 5th Wheel Trailer you will need to confirm a few things. For starters, the bushings and bolts are designed for 1-3/4" wide double eye leaf springs that use a 9/16" bolt so you must make sure this is what you have. Then, the shackle straps included with this kit are 3-1/8" long so that will need to match what you have as well. This is the most common...
