Installing New Brake Controller with Existing Wiring on a 1995 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel

Updated 03/08/2010 | Published 03/06/2010

Question:

1995 Dodge 2500 Ram Diesel The first and current brake controller is a Tekonsha that no longer works and was installed 2006. The unit had to be wired in as there was no Mopar connection under the dash. Can a new controller be installed by connecting its wires of the same color to the wires of the same color that were cut when removing the old unit? Thanks

If the wiring was for a Tekonsha product then chances are the wiring will be the same as the previous unit. I have included some links to a brake controller wiring FAQs. Near the bottom of the first, there is a diagram that should help. In the second, ignore the section that says New Dodge (Green Wire). You need the section that just says Dodge.

Please note that matching wire color on the brake controller to wire color on your vehicle might not work. You may need to test the functions of the vehicle wires before attaching the new brake controller. From the brake controller the blue wire is the brake wire that eventually goes back to the trailer connector. Black goes to the battery. Red is the brake lights (when you step on the brake), and white is ground.
