I would use a Class III receiver hitch with a 2 inch opening. The Class III hitches will have more capacity and available accessories than the Class II hitches available for the 2007 Jeep Commander. We have 5 different hitches that will fit your Commander. I have linked to a page that has all of them. None of the hitches we have for your Commander require drilling. A lot of Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler SUVs have started using hitches that are designed to bolt to the integrated frame bumper like part # 75338.

When towing, one of the most important things to remember is to keep an eye on the towing capacities of all the components. Your vehicle will have towing capacity ratings, so will the hitch, draw bar and hitch ball. Always make sure to know the capacities of the lowest rated component and never exceed those limits.

In order to set your Commander to tow a trailer you will need a hitch, ballmount/drawbar, hitch ball and trailer light wiring. You would use the hitches I mentioned above. You would select a drawbar based on the height of the trailer and the hitch on the vehicle. You would select a ball based on the coupler on the trailer. Traditional coupler trailers use either a 1-7/8, 2 or 2-5/16 inch diameter trailer ball. The trailer coupler will have a ball size stamped into it. I have added some links to help pages on our site that explain drawbars and hitch balls very thoroughly.

The most popular choice among Commander owners is the Curt Ball Mount, # C45010, and a 2 inch hitch ball, # 19247. If your trailer requires a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball you can use the Tow Ready Ball, # 19260. You will also need a pin and clip to secure the ball mount in the hitch. You can use the standard style, # PC3, or you can use the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, # e98880, which is our best seller.

You will also need a trailer harness that will control the trailer lights. Most small trailer use a 4-Pole connector. We have a plug and play harness, part # 118408, for a 2007 Jeep Commander that will make the wiring pretty easy. If the trailer has a 4-Pole connector you would be set. If it has a different connector some additional wiring will probably be necessary.

Setting up a vehicle and trailer can seem a bit overwhelming at first, but if you take it one step at a time, it is pretty easy to learn and before you know it, you will be all set. You will probably have some more questions, so feel free to write back. The information and links I have provided have quite a bit of information and should get you a good start.
