Measurements of e43YR Reducer for Cargo Carrier on 2023 Volvo V60CC

Updated 11/04/2026 | Published 11/01/2026

Question:

I have a 2023 Volvo V60CC station wagon with a Volvo branded 1.25inch hitch installed by the dealer that includes the 1.25inch ball assembly that slides into the hitch receiver and has a pin to secure the hitch. I need a 1.25inch to 2inch adapter to load a cargo carrier. I ordered a Metoware 1-1/4inch to 2inch Trailer Hitch adapter from Amazon. When it arrived, I tried to attach it to the Volvo hitch receiver. While the unit slid into the assembly, the holes for the 1/2inch pin did not line up. From what I can tell, theyre off by 1/4 inch where it appears that Volvo uses a 3inch spacing between the center of the pin hole and the point where the 2inch portion of the assembly strikes the receiver while the Meoware adapter only does 2.75. Thus, the pin holes do not line up. See the attached photo comparing the pin hole location of the Volvo hitch versus the Wetware adapter. Before purchasing the e43YR, I want to make certain that the pin will line correctly to secure the adapter to the Volvo 1.25inch receiver. I will note that back on 10 APR 23 I ordered a e43YR that works with the Volvo receiver Order 114558623. It is currently in Folkston, GA and Im in Boston, MA so I need to get a second adapter. Your website shows a different design for the e43YR that the one I have. As I recall, the one in Georgia is a Sinch shape while the currently on your website is a straight through design. I prefer the striaight through design so that I dont lose ground clearance. Thoughts?

Hey Barry!

Welcome back! Based on the measurements you provided, I'm concerned that the current etrailer Hitch Receiver Adapter # e43YR won't line up with the hitch pin hole on your Volvo. I definitely don't want you ordering another adapter only to run into the same problem!

I went out to our warehouse and put my hands on the current # e43YR to take some measurements for you.

From the end of the 1-1/4" shank to the center of its hitch pin hole, I measured 1.87". On the larger 2" receiver side, I measured 1.89" from the outside edge to the center of its hitch pin hole.

More importantly, I measured approximately 2.32" from the center of the hitch pin hole on the 1-1/4" shank to the shoulder where the adapter transitions to the larger 2" receiver.

That last measurement is what concerns me. You mentioned that your Volvo appears to require approximately 3" between the hitch pin hole and the point where the larger portion of the adapter contacts the receiver. If that's correct, the current # e43YR would fall short by about 0.68", meaning the shoulder could contact your Volvo's receiver before the pin holes line up.

I've included a measurement illustration so you can see exactly where I took these measurements.

I know you mentioned having an older # e43YR in Georgia that works with your Volvo. Since the design appears to have changed, I'd recommend comparing these measurements with your original adapter before purchasing another one. Unfortunately, I wouldn't feel comfortable guaranteeing compatibility with the current version.

The straight-through design would certainly be preferable for maintaining ground clearance, but we need to make sure the adapter fits properly first. Also, keep in mind that using a hitch adapter like this reduces your hitch's rated capacity by 50%, so that's especially important when carrying cargo.

Out of curiosity, which cargo carrier are you planning to use, and approximately how much weight will you be carrying? I'd be happy to help you look at other options that might work better with your Volvo!

Jerry: The Cargo Carrier is the WILDROAD 50"x 29" Cargo Carrier with Ramp designed for carrying Wheelchair and Mobility Scooters that I purchased on Amazon. The Transport Chair (e.g. a small wheel chair) weighs about 25 lbs. The intent is to avoid loading the transport chair in the back of my station wagon as it does take up significant storage space. According to Amazon, the carrier weighs 75.8 lbs. Bottom line is that the total weight for the carrier and cargo is approximately 100 lbs which I presume shouldn't overload the hitch. I have yet to put together the WILDROAD cargo carrier and will defer doing so until I know that I have a hitch adapter that will work. At this point, my biggest concern is finding a hitch adapter that will work with the Volvo hitch. The hitch adapter that I purchased in 2023 is in Folkston, GA and I'm in Boston, MA. I need the new hitch adapter before I ever get to Folkston. In looking at your website, would the HTAD adapter be a potential choice? There's also the TS52FR or the C45785 adapters as well. Another item to note is that the Volvo receiver is closed on the opposite end of where you slide the shank into the receiver. The distance from the receiver entrance to the back of the receiver is roughly 4.45". I will note that compared to the numbers you provided in the photo above, here are the measurements for the Volvo 1.25" tow assembly that is inserted into the receiver: A. The 1.87" measurement in your photo translates to 1.50" inches on the Volvo tow attachment. B. The 2.32" measurement in your photo translates to 2.95" inches on the Volvo tow attachment. The Metoware adapter: A. The 1.87" measurement in your photo translates to 1.77" on the Metoware adapter B. The 2.32" measurement in your photo translates to 2.54" on the Metoware adapter. Question: Is there a 'standard" distance from the receiver entrance back to the pin hole location? That is, if the Volvo appears to use 3", the Metoware appears to be 2.75" and the currently offered # e43YR is 2.32". A different approach would be to purchase a cargo carrier designed for 1.25" receivers. I looked at what Amazon has to offer and found that 1) ramps are not available, 2) cargo carrier size is smaller, and 3) concerns expressed about wobbliness. If there isn't an adapter available that will work with my Volvo, I may have to take this route presuming that the pin holes will properly align. I do see that your website offers the Curt C18110 20" x 48" Hitch Cargo carrier that Amazon also offers. In looking at photos of this product, there is no way to determine whether the pin hole will mate with the Volvo Hitch. Barry

@BarryB Thanks for your specifications and your patience while I looked into this! I think we may be getting closer to a solution! Knowing that you're carrying a 25-lb transport chair rather than a full-size wheelchair definitely helps. I also appreciate you taking the time to measure your Volvo's original ball mount. Those measurements gave me a much better idea of what we're working with. I actually went out to our warehouse and pulled all three hitch adapters you mentioned so I could physically measure them rather than have you order another one that might not fit. The Brophy Hitch Adapter # HTAD measures 2-3/4" from the center of its hitch pin hole to the shoulder where it transitions to the larger 2" receiver. From the end of its 1-1/4" shank to the center of the hitch pin hole, I measured 1-1/2". The distance from the opening of the 2" receiver to its closest pin hole is 2-1/8". The TowSmart Hitch Adapter # TS52FR also measures 2-3/4" from the hitch pin hole to the shoulder, but its shank-end-to-pin-hole measurement is 2". The distance from the 2" receiver opening to its closest pin hole is also 2". Finally, the Curt Hitch Adapter # C45785 measures 2-1/2" from the hitch pin hole to the shoulder, 1-1/2" from the end of the shank to the hitch pin hole, and 2-1/2" from the 2" receiver opening to its closest pin hole. Unfortunately, none of those adapters appears to be an ideal match based on the 2.95" pin-hole-to-shoulder measurement you provided for your Volvo's original ball mount. The Brophy and TowSmart adapters come closest at 2-3/4", but both are still approximately 0.20" shorter. That doesn't necessarily rule them out if your original ball mount has some extra clearance, but I wouldn't recommend purchasing either one without verifying that. As for your question about a standard hitch pin hole location, there isn't one universal pin-hole-to-shoulder measurement that applies to every hitch accessory. That's why we're seeing these differences between the adapters. Your Volvo's closed receiver also adds another consideration, since we need to make sure an adapter doesn't bottom out before the hitch pin holes align. Now, I also pulled the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18110 you mentioned, and I think this might be a more promising alternative! The Curt carrier fits directly into a 1-1/4" receiver without requiring a separate adapter. It has a threaded hitch pin hole for its anti-rattle hardware, and I measured approximately 1-1/2" from the end of the shank to the center of that hole. That's an exact match for the measurement you provided on your original Volvo ball mount. There's also a second, unthreaded hole approximately 2-1/2" from the end of the shank. From the threaded hole to the bend in the carrier's shank, I measured approximately 5", and from the unthreaded hole to the bend, approximately 4". Those measurements are encouraging because the threaded hole appears to be in the same position as the pin hole on your original Volvo attachment. The carrier also provides substantially more distance between that hole and the bend than the adapters provide between their pin holes and shoulders. I still can't guarantee compatibility without confirming the position of the pin hole in your Volvo's receiver, but the Curt carrier is looking like a better possibility than any of the adapters we've checked. Another advantage is that you wouldn't have the 50% reduction in hitch capacity associated with using an adapter. Your WILDROAD carrier weighs approximately 75.8 lbs, and your transport chair weighs another 25 lbs, putting the combined weight at about 101 lbs. Even though that isn't an especially heavy load, we'd still need to verify your Volvo hitch's tongue weight rating before using either setup. The downside to the Curt carrier is that it doesn't have a ramp, which I know was one of the features you specifically wanted. However, with your transport chair weighing only 25 lbs, it might be a practical compromise if you're comfortable lifting it onto the platform. I certainly understand wanting to get this figured out before assembling your WILDROAD carrier, and I appreciate your patience while I've been checking these measurements. Would you be comfortable lifting the transport chair onto the Curt carrier, or is having a ramp essential? I'd like to make sure we find something that's not only compatible with your Volvo but also convenient for you to use!
