Welcome back Samuel. To add a 4-way wiring harness to your 1998 Mercury Mountaineer, I recommend the Curt item # C55241. This harness is designed to plug directly into a factory port located behind your rear bumper like the picture I attached below.
The Curt item # C55241 will provide you with a 4-way connector capable of controlling your trailer's lighting functions. It will hang below your SUV so I strongly recommend using the Mounting Bracket for 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector item # C42CR and item # C83DR. This combination of mounting brackets will place the 4-way connector item # C55241 in a safe accessible location. The band clamp will attach the mounting brackets to the crossbar of your hitch without having to drill.
If your Mountaineer does not have the connector in the picture below, you'll need the Curt item # C55345 wiring harness which plugs in behind your rear tail lights.
The prices for this parts will be located at the top of this Q&A or on the individual product pages.
What do you typically haul around in your utility trailer? Feel free to answer this and throw in any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.
