Hydrastar Disc Brake Conversion With a 2026 Silverado Factory Brake Controller

Updated 10/20/2026 | Published 10/16/2026

Question:

I tow a fifth wheel with two 7,000 lb axles behind a 2026 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. I'm looking at your complete Hydrastar disc brake conversion kit with the wiring and breakaway kit included. Can I keep my factory brake controller, or will I need to replace that too?

Hey Brian! You can keep the factory brake controller in your 2026 Chevy Silverado 2500 when installing the Hydrastar Disc Brake Conversion Kit # HYD866FR. You'll want to add the Hydrastar GM Adapter Module # HYD29ZR to address the compatibility issue between the GM controller and Hydrastar actuator.

This is a complete kit that includes everything you need for installation. It has the brakes, bearings, seals, actuator, brake lines, 7-way wiring, junction box, and breakaway battery. It is designed for tandem 7,000 lb axles with an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern, 1/2" wheel studs, and a 5 bolt brake flange.

Where are you headed once you get the new brakes installed?

We're heading out to Colorado next summer. We've had a few trips through the mountains where I wished the trailer had better brakes, so I'm looking forward to making the switch.

@Brian the Hydrastar disc brakes will be a great upgrade for those mountain trips! You'll appreciate the stronger, more consistent braking, especially on long downhill stretches. Enjoy Colorado!
