Is the BTBRV InstaLatch Ball Mount Suitable for a Boat Trailer

Published 10/16/2026

Question:

I tow a boat most weekends, and my old hitch pin is always rusty and difficult to remove. I need a 4-inch drop and 2-inch ball. Is the InstaLatch made from stainless steel, or will the mechanism rust too?

Hi Aaron! The BTBRV InstaLatch Ball Mount # BTBRV007 is a great option for your boat trailer. It has the 4" drop and 2" ball you need, and the built-in hitch pins make it easy to remove without fighting with a separate pin.

The entire ball mount isn't stainless steel, but the latch mechanism has stainless steel components. The steel body also has an e-coat and powder coat finish to help protect against corrosion. I would still rinse it off after exposure to saltwater and keep the mechanism clean. A little lightweight oil will help keep the pins moving smoothly.

Are you launching in freshwater or saltwater?

Mostly freshwater lakes, but we do occasionally take the boat to the coast. Is there anything special I should do after launching in saltwater?

@Aaron I'd rinse the InstaLatch thoroughly with fresh water after saltwater exposure, especially around the release mechanism and built-in pins. Once everything is dry, a little lightweight oil on the moving parts will help keep them operating smoothly. I'd also remove the ball mount when you aren't towing rather than leaving it exposed to the elements. No matter what it is made of, that salt does not play nice as you probably know all to well.
