How to Stop an Adjustable Ball Mount From Rattling

Published 10/16/2026

Question:

My adjustable hitch has movement where the ball platform pins into the channel. I only tow one trailer and have never changed it from a 4-inch drop. The trailer needs a 2-5/16-inch ball, and my receiver is 2 inches. Would a fixed mount make more sense?

Hey Brian! Yes, I would switch to the BTBRV InstaLatch Ball Mount # BTBRV010. It gives you the same 4" drop and 2-5/16" ball without the adjustable platform and its additional connection point. Since you never change the height, you aren't giving up anything you use. The built-in hitch pin means one less part to be knocking around, and it also makes it really easy to use when you're setting up for towing.

I also recommend adding the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061 to eliminate movement between the ball mount and your receiver. This will take care of rattling at the receiver, while switching to the fixed ball mount eliminates the movement in your adjustable hitch.

What kind of trailer are you towing?

It's an enclosed cargo trailer. Would the fixed InstaLatch eliminate all the noise, or could I still get some movement at the receiver?

@Brian you can still get some movement between the shank and receiver since there is a little clearance between them. The fixed # BTBRV010 eliminates the adjustable platform that was causing your original problem, and adding the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061 will help take care of movement at the receiver.
