How Does the BTBRV InstaLatch Stay in the Receiver Without a Hitch Pin

Published 10/16/2026

Question:

I’m looking at the 6-inch drop InstaLatch, but I don’t understand what keeps it in the truck. Does the red handle hold the trailer, or is there something else inside the receiver? I’m used to a regular hitch pin.

Hey Shawn! The BTBRV InstaLatch Ball Mount # BTBRV008 has built-in spring-loaded pins that engage the hitch pin holes in your receiver. The red plate operates those pins; it isn't simply a handle holding the mount in place.

Pull the plate while inserting the mount, release it, and slide the mount until both pins fully engage. Then install the included wire lock pin through the release assembly so it can't be operated accidentally. You can also replace that pin with the etrailer Lock # e39PR if you want to keep someone from removing the ball mount.

What kind of trailer are you towing?

Does the wire lock pin actually hold the weight of the trailer, or is that just there to keep the red release from opening?

@Shawn the wire lock pin is just there to keep the release mechanism from being operated accidentally. The built-in steel pins engage the hitch receiver and secure the ball mount for towing. You can also replace the wire pin with the # e39PR lock if you want theft protection.
